Title: Local teams in FA Cup Finals
Post by: thick_mike on February 14, 2019, 05:46:10 PM
Dad has seen Blues (1956), West Brom (1954), Wolves (1949) and Villa (2000) in FA Cup finals.

He used to play for local football teams in Smethwick, and if they got allocated a ticket and nobody wanted it, he would go. The only time he couldn’t get hold of one was for Villa in 1957.

I bet there aren’t many still alive that had seen the big four local teams in finals.

I heard they were making a film of Bert Trautmann’s life.

Trautman’s autobiography is excellent. Like a book of 2 halves; 1st half WW2 and Nazis. 2nd half playing football in England.

I was given a copy of the 1956 FA Cup final Sports Argus. Man City 3 Blues 1. It's a wonderful read.

You just know that the noses were walking away from that game consoling themselves by saying to each other "At least we got to an FA Cup Final, I bet it will be donkeys years before Villa will manage to do that again".

Haha! Dad has the programme tucked away somewhere. As a boy, I thought there was a wonderful symmetry in the two Birmingham clubs playing the two Manchester clubs in successive years in the FA Cup Final...and the correct result in both games.

Sorry if I posted this before but, I was in a charity shop in Sligo Town about eighteen months or so ago and I saw that they had the programme from the 1956 Cup Final.  I think they wanted €40 for it although I'm not too sure.  I genuinely considered buying it for no other reason than it's part of my home town's heritage, I think the price put me off.  One thing I couldn't understand was, they had it locked up in a display cabinet!

I remember our Nan showing me her copy of the Argus souvenir blue edition from the 1931 cup final between Albion and Blues. God knows why.

Clubs from our city have been careless in the past when it comes to getting FA Cup related stuff stolen. As no burglar has had a chance in 147 years to steal a Blues held FA Cup trophy, that only leaves their programmes to nick.

Presumably to stop some Johnny come lately Man City fan nicking it as evidence that they had been the club their family had supported for generations, whilst believing Bert Trautmann was one of the SS baddies in Casablanca.

Coventry, Forest and Villa twice are the only ones in my lifetime. I remember Albion getting to the semis in both cup competitions in 1981-1982 and losing them both.

I remember John Wile with the blood soaked bandage on his head in Albion’s semi (Ipswich? 1978). And also remember Kenny Hibbitt diving against Spurs to win the dog heads a replay in their semi final in 1981.

I remember dancing round my nan's kitchen at the end of one of those semis. You can guess which one.

On a similar theme, I wonder if any Villa one week/Blues the next supporters still exist.

I only ever knew of two and they were mates of my Dad and they had a business partnership as shop fitters. One was Villa and one was Small Heath and they had season tickets next to each other in the Trinity and the main stand at Small Heath. The first two games I went to at Villa Park in 1979 was by using their tickets.

I remember feeling exactly the same in 2010.

Dad knows someone with a villa/blues season tickets. He’s a former referee.

I’m sure I have a few Villa Cup related Sports Argus and Meaning Evil in my loft!
I’ll have to dig them out and see what I have.

I went to a couple of Small Heath games when I was (very) young with neighbours who had season tickets. I do know of a few people who used to watch teams on alternate Saturdays or midweek but I daresay the cost would be prohibitive now.
