Mine are;
David Platt - goals from midfield and leadership qualities.
Ian Taylor - not the most skilful but just an all round ace bloke that could crop up with vital goals.
Dennis Mortimer - need I say anymore.
Controversial as I missed out Sid, but, I just loved IT more as he was from more my era.
-
I'm just a bit too young to remember seeing Mortimer play, so if I was gonna pick the best 3, I'd go Sid, Platt, and Milner.
-
Sid
Cropley
Platt
-
From my lifetime Mortimer, Cowans and Platt. Norm Crandles would include Danny Blanchflower and Jack Watts would say Gibson, Talbot and Tate.
-
From my lifetime Mortimer, Cowans and Platt.
Hard to argue with that. From more recent years there might be an argument for Townsend and Milner but probably not in the same league as those three.
-
1 Sid, who till my dying day I will argue was an all round better player than Hoddle.
2 Platt for his goals on top of his general play (even in the disaterous Dr Jo season) and he did it at international level too, although arguably he should have done it for longer. He didn't seem to have the hunger by the time he was a multi millionaire at Arsenal.
3 If Dennis Mortimer had been at his peak ten years later he would have had dozens of caps. Apparently in 1982 in the forty man provisional squad, despite being the captain of the Champions Of Europe (imagine an English captain of a Champions League winning side not getting a cap now) he was considered to be not as good as Brooking, Coppell, Keegan, Hoddle, Robson, McDermott, Wilkins or even Graham Rix and David Armstrong.
Actually, I think I want to swap and put Mortimer second and Platt third but I can't be bothered editing my post.

Sid
Mortimer
Rioch
-
No love for Gareth Barry or Petrov?
-

Another vote for these three.

At one point under BFR we had Cowans, Townsend, Richardson, Houghton, Parker, Daley, Froggatt, Cox, Fenton, Blake, Beinlich and Breitkreutz all on the books at the same time to pick from.
-
From my lifetime Mortimer, Cowans and Platt.
Agreed. With Cropley as sub.

Agree with that as well.
-
From my time of going (1988), I'd say Platt, Barry and Milner.
-
Platt, Taylor and Kevin Richardson. Loved Garry Parker too.

Platt, Taylor and Kevin Richardson. Loved Garry Parker too.
Kevin Richardson was massively underrated. No frills but kept things ticking over in midfield excellently and we really missed him on the rare occasions he was out injured. He was the 'water carrier', and I mean that as a compliment because every good team needs a player good at that role. It is no coincidence that he won major trophies with Everton, Arsenal and Villa. I think he may also have been one of SGT's last signings for Watford.

I once saw Kevin Richardson on the Log Flume at Drayton Manor Park. He was certainly a water carrier that day.

I met Kevin Richardson three times. The first and third times were on the touchline for a very low key friendly at Witney Town in pre season 1991 and then in my local bar when I lived in Tenerife around 1995 and most of the Coventry squad were over there on a break as they had a blank FA Cup weekend (I asked where Big Ron was and Richardson said he was holed up in a Villa with his wife whilst the lads had a day off). It was Grand national day and the Coventry players were all having a bet with my mate who run a little bookies operation in the bar. On both of those occasions Richardson was a great bloke and really chatty. However, on the occasion I met him in between it was at Dwight Yorke's 21st birthday party (Yorke lived next door to my cousin in Shustoke at the time). The party was held at Villa Park and Richardson had had a few drinks and was getting arsey with the bar staff.

Players I've seen in the flesh is Sid, Platt and Barry. All should have had more England caps.
-
Cowans
Platt
Mortimer
Honourable mentions
Milner
Taylor
Barry
Oh and lob in Richarson very underrated player. As were Mortimer and Taylor. Oh and Milner still is to this dau.
-
Another vote for Mortimer, Cowans and Platt.
I never took to Richardson, smug cheating twat. Even if I ignored how much I dislike him he still wouldn't make my top 10.
-
And another vote for Cowans, Mortimer and Platt.
-
Rioch, Mortimer, Cowans.
-
Sid
Mortimer
Rioch
Yes WDV. Caught up with your post. No one to touch these three.
-
Sid
Mortimer
Cropley, he could have been so good but for Robertson.

Wasn't it Ally Brown as opposed to Ally Robertson?
-
Yes, it was Brown, the scumbag.
An honourable mention for Andy Townsend would only be fair.

Sid
Mortimer
Rioch

I seem to recall a time when there was a chant of "Birchie Get The Beer In" at some away game or games.

Since I've been watching:
Cowans
Platt
Barry
-
Since I've been watching: Sid, Milner, Taylor.
Platt was great for us, but he comes across as a twat so I've not included him.
All-time: maybe Eric Houghton, Mortimer and Sid.
-
Rioch and Mortimer and then I'm struggling.
Sid, Platt, Cropley, Townsend, Milner, Barry, Taylor.
Errr...ok, Cowans.
-
Sid
Mortimer
Cropley, he could have been so good but for Robertson.
Wasn't it Ally Brown as opposed to Ally Robertson?
I stand corrected, it was Ally Brown.

That post is known as 'a quote fail' BV. I would say that you will learn how to quote on here but if you are anything like me you probably won't. After eight years and 18,000 posts I would be very surprised if I don't hold the record for quote fails. Obviously it would be wonderfully ironic if this one ended up in the collection too. ;)
-
Sid, Platty and Barry for me.
-
Bruce Rioch was my first hero but have to say Cowans, Mortimer and Cropley for me. I know Cropley didn't reach his potential because of a tesco person, but was brilliant and have hopes of John Mcginn following that. That is my middle 3
-
Mortimer, Cropley and Cowans - picks themselves.
Shout outs to: Platt, Bremner, Bruce Rioch and God when he moved forward (he would be in my all time villa team from Goalie to Centre Forward to Commercial Manager.
-
Sid, Mortimer, Platt for me too
-
From my lifetime Mortimer, Cowans and Platt. Norm Crandles would include Danny Blanchflower and Jack Watts would say Gibson, Talbot and Tate.
Joe Tate used to live opposite my Uncle's in High Haden, Old Hill.
Never really appreciated who is was at the time but was lucky enough to chat to his wife after he died and she showed my brother and I loads of his Villa stuff and England caps. We were about 13 or so at the time and still didn't appreciate what a great player he must have been.
Mrs Tate was a teacher as Reddall Hill I think. Amazing to think there's lives would be so much different had he been playing today.
-
My first Villa hero was Bruce Rioch, he was a one-man team at times, but I have to concur with many on here, can't see past Mortimer, Cowans and Platt.
-
Cowans, Townsend and Platt.
-
Not sure if my heart and head are confusing my personal favourites with the best midfielders I've seen in a Villa shirt but I'll go with Rioch, Cropley and Cowans.
-
In my Villa time
Sid - Easily englands best, better than Hoddle.
Morty - See above
Platt - Almost as good as Sid
Shouts to Bremner, Barry and Milner.
High hopes for Jack and McGinn
-
Cowans, Mortimer, Barry.
Shouts for Taylor, Merson, Carrodus, Platt, Bremner, Cropley, Rioch.
