A last minute winner from Grealish in an awful game like last time would be wonderful.

1-1.  Our record against them at home in league games is mostly rubbish.  I think they'll still have that newly promoted buzz about them, and we've still got Steve Bruce in charge.

This is Bruce, so probably one and some on the bench who'll appear with 5 minutes to go.

I think we will win. If Bruce starts defensively I can see us struggling to break them down as we're at home. I'm sure they will see a point here as a great result. Put Green on from the start and BB in midfield and we should be fine.

I know we had a great result on Monday but watching the game a second time it reminded me of a lot of games since we have been down here. So slow and lacking in movement and then reverting to the hoof up to Koj.
I was considering going for a 0-0 for this game but If it's true about Jack staying and the new signings in the wind I'm now going for 3-0 to us.
Looking forward to a great season.

Impossible to predict the line-up until after the transfer window closes but 8 changes from a winning side on Monday night will have to be some kind of record. Whelan and Hourihane will surely keep their places.

I can't see too many changes to the line up from Monday night, if any to be honest.  Any new signings from today onward won't have had enough time to train, so will probably not feature.

Wigan raise their game against bigger teams as they showed in the cup last year. They will also be on a high from promotion so all in all they will be well up for it. They will be a tough nut to crack but I think we will edge it 2-1.

3 points is the most important thing. We're lucky to have such soft fixtures at the start of the season which should allow us to not only pick up maximum points but time to bed in the new players. My only fear right now is that Bruce has too many players to choose from and it will take him until after Xmas to find his best XI.

That said, like last season where we mainly relied on individual brilliance to win games rather than a great team performances, I think we have enough talent in the team to get us the 3 points on Saturday. It would help us if PaulE could repeat his Tuesday's pre-match "Hutton offers nothing going forward" comment with a line or two of how shit Kodja is. ;)

No excuses. 3-0 Villa win and a chance to give a few of the new boys a few minutes off the bench.

We do have a pretty crap record at home against this mob. I'll settle for any old scrappy win. We can worry about developing a pattern and playing scintillating football as the season goes on. Just pick up as many points as we can for now and don't leave ourselves having to play catch up again.

Mon you Lions.

To be fair that's the first time Hutton has scored in about 4 years.  I was also talking about when he plays on the left and I stand by that.  He did well as left back cover last year because he stayed in our half and defended.

You won't get any kodjia criticism out of me though because, for me, he looks like a player who is struggling with confidence and fitness. If he can get through 4-5 more games without injury and can grab a goal or 2 I think we'll see the guy who scored 19 for us 2 years ago.

As it stands, I like the idea of the back 3 that's been posted somewhere.

                     Nyland

           Hutton Chester Tuanzebe
Elmo                                          Bryan
             Hourihane   McGinn
                       Grealish
     Green                            Kodjia

RHM on the bench to get the last 20-25 minutes again. I've put Green and Kodjia quite wide on purpose so we can try to drag the central defenders a little wider and create space for the midfield 3 to attack.

Green and RHM to start I reckon. Bit of pace and unpredictability needed at home. Kodjia deserves to be dropped and no point playing Elmo at home v Wigan on the right wing. So either drop Elmo or Taylor and move Hutton across. Others need to earn their place in the side, league cup game ideal for them.

Starting with two wins would be a great start after the summer we have had, irrespective of the opposition.

Said it earlier, but probably wouldn't change much if anything at all from Monday.  Bench would probably see a few changes though with the new keeper coming into the squad, Jedinak back if fit and McGinn being added.  Bench to look something like:

Nyland, Bree, Tuanzebe, Jedinak, McGinn, Green, RHM (Bjarnason if Jedinak is not fit)

We've got the cup game on Tuesday to have a look at players.

Not sure to be honest as Bruce is not really one for shaking things up too much.  I suppose it's not inconceivable that Tuanzebe or Jedinak will start ahead of Elphick on Saturday, but  it also wouldn't surprise me if he chose the same team.

I must admit that I do find the decision not to purchase another centre half to start alongside Chester a concerning one at this point and it would have been the first purchase I would have made.

Keep it tight for eighty minutes or so then, if we are in desperate need of a goal, get Whelan on.

As it stands, I like the idea of the back 3 that's been posted somewhere.

                     Nyland

           Hutton Chester Tuanzebe
Elmo                                          Bryan Taylor
             Hourihane   McGinn
                       Grealish
     Green                            Kodjia

RHM on the bench to get the last 20-25 minutes again. I've put Green and Kodjia quite wide on purpose so we can try to drag the central defenders a little wider and create space for the midfield 3 to attack.

Sigh.  One small correction to that now.  Cheers Joe, you twat.

Hopefully it's someone other than Taylor 4 1/2 hours to put something in place.

                      Steer

           Hutton Chester Tuanzebe

Elmo                                          Taylor

    Green     McGinn     Hourihane

                   Grealish

                    Kodjia

Subs:

Nyland
Jedinak
Whelan
RHM
Adomah
Bjarnnason
Doyle- Hayes

Not sure if RDL is still suspended or he would be added for his versatility

Lack of striking options is key for me and needs addressing today

I'm hoping for a better defensive performance than the shaky effort we witnessed on Monday night, so hopefully SB will recognise Elphick's misgivings & ring the changes! If Jack turns on the style (and why shouldn't he?) & McGuinn hits the ground running, I can see us giving Wigan a bit of a going-over: especially if Kodjia finally manages to get his arse in gear. Admittedly that's a lot of ifs & buts, but I'm feeling confident that we'll have too much for The Latics.

So I'll go 3-1 to the Villa again; and a growing feeling of optimism in & around VP.

Whenever I feel confident about a result, we stroll around looking half-asleep and end up losing 1-0 to a team of utter cloggers.

So I'm predicting a crushing defeat for us. Logic, init. Completely foolproof.

I'd push Green right up front and then get him and Kodjia to drift wide. We know neither of them are particularly good at holding the ball up or winning it in the air so put them against the fullbacks instead and then have them cut in. If it means the centre backs separate a little then even better for Grealish, McGinn, Hourihane coming from deep.

My concerns as well, how times have we had a large majority going for a win and Villa then go and let us down.

Hope not, but wouldn't be surprised that Bruce may go again with Adomah instead of Green. Also if things aren't going well, he's gotta give the Rushian at least 30 mins, he does tend to leave it late before making changes. RHM looked good on Monday in the short time he was on.

Looking forward to the first home game of the season:

A mid-summer's night dream I had that Jack scored a wonder goal infront of the Holte to send the home fans into ectasy and seal the 3 points. I must have last season's screamer v bluebirds on loop in my brain.

From going from the proverbial rock bottom a few week ago to going into the Wigan game with renewed energy and enthusiasm, you couldnt have flipped the situation any quicker than a fresh ommelette. The relief when 2 billionaires arrived in the nick of time to rescue the club from the shambles it had become, in my mind may have come from William McGregor himself - "Lord what fools these mortals be!"

A steal from Hibs with my scottish (celtic supporting despite living in Edinburgh) cousins seething that we have bought a gem north of the border for a knockdown means we are due some luck in the transfer window. If only the trio that cost us £17 million and not contributing anything can be moved on would complete the summer. Unfortunately most of the football world don't take leave of their senses and would take these wasters on.

I assume Billionaires dont like to sell a prize asset for a knockdown like the rest of us and profoundly told those North London pricks who had the gall to offer Onomah and £2m in the beginning to go away. We still have Jack and he wont be sold in January despite the newspapers and sky's best efforts.

I genuinely believe we are half decent to mount another challenge.

And a middle finger to the twat whose name now escapes me that was within a half time orange of removing Taylor from left back, the allure of the cottager's coin proved too irresistible.

I've put us down for the win but it's not underestimating them at all, it's that I reckon our fans will suck a couple in at the Holte end through sheer force of will because of the feel good factor of Grealish staying, especially if the club can do something like announcing a new contract before the game.

Gone for a win - based on nothing more than early season blind optimism and the huge feel good factor generated by new investment into the club, telling spurs to fuck off over grealish and the away win at Hull. I’d really love to be at VP for this match. Hope everyone who goes has a top day out and 3 points in the bag for us.

Woken up excited. One of those where I just want to put my Villa shirt on and go straight there.
Holte is going to be rocking, new players are going to be awed at the place they've come to, and the reception he gets is going to erase any pangs of disappointment Jack might have.
We're going to smash Wigan in the best display since the Dingles didnt know what hit them.

Harvey Knibbs is 3rd favourite to score first with Skybet? Can we read anything into that?

No.

Coming from the bloke who was saying with a degree of authority that Jack was certainly leaving the club with nothing to back it up.

Have a day off

Have a day off pal.

Jack certainly was leaving when we were buggered financially. I am glad that changed. I recommend you wind your neck in though.

I suggest you wind your neck in and concede that you know fuck all.

@ 34k I think (Wigan only taken bottom of the Witton).

That would mean the upper Witton holds 8-9k which is a stretch.
