Villa Park
Saturday 11th August
3pm
-
2-0 home win
Goals from Kodjia and Hourihane
-
A last minute winner from Grealish in an awful game like last time would be wonderful.
-
4-2. Us too strong but both defences dreadful.
-
1-1. Our record against them at home in league games is mostly rubbish. I think they'll still have that newly promoted buzz about them, and we've still got Steve Bruce in charge.
-
2-0 win for me.
-
How many debutants may we see on Saturday? I’ll go for 4.

This is Bruce, so probably one and some on the bench who'll appear with 5 minutes to go.

Do you ever take a break?

2-0
Mcginn
Green

4-2 for me too. I think Wigan will go for it, thus leaving space at the back that, hopefully, Green and Kodj can capitalise on.
-
2-0.
-
2-0 and we'll be feeling very good about ourselves. Kodj and one of the new boys.
-
Rocking up to Villa Park on Saturday like ...
Nyland
Bryan
Axel
Chester
Hutton
McGinn
Birkir
Powell
Green
Kodjia
Hepburn Murphy
-
4-0 and top of the league, where we remain until May.
Bruce out!
-
I think we will win. If Bruce starts defensively I can see us struggling to break them down as we're at home. I'm sure they will see a point here as a great result. Put Green on from the start and BB in midfield and we should be fine.
-
Find a spot for Grealish in that line up.
-
Start with Grealish and work around it.
-
I know we had a great result on Monday but watching the game a second time it reminded me of a lot of games since we have been down here. So slow and lacking in movement and then reverting to the hoof up to Koj.
I was considering going for a 0-0 for this game but If it's true about Jack staying and the new signings in the wind I'm now going for 3-0 to us.
Looking forward to a great season.

Impossible to predict the line-up until after the transfer window closes but 8 changes from a winning side on Monday night will have to be some kind of record. Whelan and Hourihane will surely keep their places.

I can't see too many changes to the line up from Monday night, if any to be honest. Any new signings from today onward won't have had enough time to train, so will probably not feature.
-
2-0 Villa :D
-
They will be a lot stronger than when we played them before Xmas two seasons ago but I think we should still be able to beat them on our own patch. 2-1 Villa.
-
Wigan raise their game against bigger teams as they showed in the cup last year. They will also be on a high from promotion so all in all they will be well up for it. They will be a tough nut to crack but I think we will edge it 2-1.
-
If we go with the same 11 as Monday I actually think we could lose this one. That win masked a multitude of problems
Whoever is coming in and out by tomorrow I'd like to see green and tuanzebe come into the side
-

Do you ever take a break?
From giving my opinion? Any reason I should, or listen to somebody with a whole 362 posts to his name?
-
Any "official" news and/or pictures of the new pitch?
-
3 points is the most important thing. We're lucky to have such soft fixtures at the start of the season which should allow us to not only pick up maximum points but time to bed in the new players. My only fear right now is that Bruce has too many players to choose from and it will take him until after Xmas to find his best XI.
That said, like last season where we mainly relied on individual brilliance to win games rather than a great team performances, I think we have enough talent in the team to get us the 3 points on Saturday. It would help us if PaulE could repeat his Tuesday's pre-match "Hutton offers nothing going forward" comment with a line or two of how shit Kodja is. ;)
No excuses. 3-0 Villa win and a chance to give a few of the new boys a few minutes off the bench.
-

That told me. I didn’t realise the number of posts one makes is a factor in this argument. Perhaps in the past I have wanted to express my opinion about Steve Bruce but held back to avoid sounding repetitive.

I don't think anybody would care. As for holding back about giving your opinion about Bruce, it's literally all you do. That and having a go at fans who don't share your opinion.

Can someone with under 400 posts (me) say something that doesn’t agree with Risso opinion.
-
Of course. If you read through the posts, it was him stating that I wasn't allowed to give mine, and not the other way round.
-
3-0. Cafu hat trick.

Actually, I post my opinion on many different threads, and perhaps I should have stuck to the Bruce one to “have a go” at you. I apologise if it offended. Anyway let’s hope we beat Wigan on Saturday
-
Absolutely.
-
We do have a pretty crap record at home against this mob. I'll settle for any old scrappy win. We can worry about developing a pattern and playing scintillating football as the season goes on. Just pick up as many points as we can for now and don't leave ourselves having to play catch up again.
Mon you Lions.

To be fair that's the first time Hutton has scored in about 4 years. I was also talking about when he plays on the left and I stand by that. He did well as left back cover last year because he stayed in our half and defended.
You won't get any kodjia criticism out of me though because, for me, he looks like a player who is struggling with confidence and fitness. If he can get through 4-5 more games without injury and can grab a goal or 2 I think we'll see the guy who scored 19 for us 2 years ago.
As it stands, I like the idea of the back 3 that's been posted somewhere.
Nyland
Hutton Chester Tuanzebe
Elmo Bryan
Hourihane McGinn
Grealish
Green Kodjia
RHM on the bench to get the last 20-25 minutes again. I've put Green and Kodjia quite wide on purpose so we can try to drag the central defenders a little wider and create space for the midfield 3 to attack.
-
Aston Vila 8 (Eight) Wigan 0
-
I like that team but fear with so many options, we'll have the same Bruce in a sweet shop. Let's pray he can fully use the talent available to him.
-

He'll be licking his lips at the prospect of fielding seven defenders and four goalies.

I did question when we signed Moreira where Bruce would play him.

He's taking over from Samba as an emergency striker.

Green and RHM to start I reckon. Bit of pace and unpredictability needed at home. Kodjia deserves to be dropped and no point playing Elmo at home v Wigan on the right wing. So either drop Elmo or Taylor and move Hutton across. Others need to earn their place in the side, league cup game ideal for them.
Starting with two wins would be a great start after the summer we have had, irrespective of the opposition.

Whelan is NEVER going to score an overhead kick regardless of the distance, his legs barely work to run, if he tried to make an overhead kick he'd put his back out.
-
This will be a feel good Saturday, and I don't think Wigan will spoil the party.
-
Said it earlier, but probably wouldn't change much if anything at all from Monday. Bench would probably see a few changes though with the new keeper coming into the squad, Jedinak back if fit and McGinn being added. Bench to look something like:
Nyland, Bree, Tuanzebe, Jedinak, McGinn, Green, RHM (Bjarnason if Jedinak is not fit)
We've got the cup game on Tuesday to have a look at players.
-
`

Reckon Elphick will still be in the starting 11?

Not sure to be honest as Bruce is not really one for shaking things up too much. I suppose it's not inconceivable that Tuanzebe or Jedinak will start ahead of Elphick on Saturday, but it also wouldn't surprise me if he chose the same team.
I must admit that I do find the decision not to purchase another centre half to start alongside Chester a concerning one at this point and it would have been the first purchase I would have made.
-
I’d like Elphick to start because Steer has worked with him.
-
2-0 and we'll be feeling very good about ourselves. Kodj and one of the new boys.
Agree really want to see The Kodge back on the score sheet he was so good in his first season.
Come on Kodge!
-
2-1 to the villa.
-
A draw. Hope I'm wrong though and we start our home campaign off well. Play our best available team. That means Tommy sits out for me, as does Whelan.

Sigh. One small correction to that now. Cheers Joe, you twat.
-
I'd like to think this will be a walk in the park, but Villa have a funny way of making these things difficult.
-
I reckon...
Nyland Bunn Steer Moreira
Elmohamady Bree Tuanzebe Chester Elphick Hutton Taylor
Keep it tight for eighty minutes or so then, if we are in desperate need of a goal, get Whelan on.
-
No mercy, take no prisoners, destroy them and most of all FTF, 1-0 scrappy shin off Chester.

Hopefully it's someone other than Taylor 4 1/2 hours to put something in place.
-
We ought to be winning this comfortably but....I just hope we see starts for RHM and Green or at least a good run out.
-
Wigan looked good in their first game of the season and have the buzz of a newly promoted team so it won't be as easy as some believe.
-
Steer
Hutton Chester Tuanzebe
Elmo Taylor
Green McGinn Hourihane
Grealish
Kodjia
Subs:
Nyland
Jedinak
Whelan
RHM
Adomah
Bjarnnason
Doyle- Hayes
Not sure if RDL is still suspended or he would be added for his versatility
Lack of striking options is key for me and needs addressing today
-
It won't be 3 at the back yet I'm sure
-
I’d go:
A Goalkeeper
Elmo Axel Chester Hutton
McGinn Bjarnason Hourihane
Green Grealish
Kodjia
-
It'll be.....
Norse God
McCafu
Mad Tom
Chester
Welsh Roberto Carlos
Whelan
Hourihane
Jack
Albert
Kod
Elmo
Steer, RDL, Bree, Henri, Green, Bjarney, The Russian
However.........
Is Jedi still ill ?
Is RDL fit ?
-
Hopefully it's better than the last league fixture between us, though a similar goal from Grealish would be nice
-
RDL is suspended
Really hope green starts.

You realise we've just bought the Scottish Matthäus? Not even a place on the bench for him?!
-
We’ve kept Jack so we’ll smash this lot 28-1. The 1 because either Taylor or Elphick will drop a bollock.
-
This feels very strange but I'm actually, don't tell anyone, looking forward to this, now.
-
Might need Jedinak to play, if fit, so he can mark their giant centre back, Dan Burn at corners.
-
I’d go:
A Goalkeeper
Elmo Axel Chester Hutton
McGinn Bjarnason Hourihane
Green Grealish
Kodjia
yep..decent
-

It can be our little secret... ;)
-
I honestly believe we are going tear Wigan apart with a breathtaking exhibition of football.
1-0
-
I’d go:
A Goalkeeper
Elmo Axel Chester Hutton
McGinn Bjarnason Hourihane
Green Grealish
Kodjia
That looks good to me.
-

Same here. Might actually nip up for this one.
-
You realise we've just bought the Scottish Matthäus? Not even a place on the bench for him?!
I was trying to think like Bruce
-
I'm hoping for a better defensive performance than the shaky effort we witnessed on Monday night, so hopefully SB will recognise Elphick's misgivings & ring the changes! If Jack turns on the style (and why shouldn't he?) & McGuinn hits the ground running, I can see us giving Wigan a bit of a going-over: especially if Kodjia finally manages to get his arse in gear. Admittedly that's a lot of ifs & buts, but I'm feeling confident that we'll have too much for The Latics.
So I'll go 3-1 to the Villa again; and a growing feeling of optimism in & around VP.
COYL
-
Whenever I feel confident about a result, we stroll around looking half-asleep and end up losing 1-0 to a team of utter cloggers.
So I'm predicting a crushing defeat for us. Logic, init. Completely foolproof.
-
Me too Auntie. Set out for the holy ground tomorrow with a much lighter step than I left Wembley.
That comment by our new owner to Tottenham that we were not interested in their money was the biggest boost for morale that I have known for many years.
-
I'd go for a 4-2-3-1: Norseman; Elmo, Chester, Axel, Hutton; McGinn, Hourihane; Green, Jack, Albert; Kodj.
-
With all the positivity of keeping James and Jack, and looking at where we were a month ago, I'm really hoping for a good win tomorrow. I'm also looking forward to seeing McGinn play too.
Saying that, with all the good feeling, it would just be so "Villa" to go and lose 0-3?
-

Sir, any chance of a word with that son of yours to get him to return to the H&V-fold? An Eamonn (and a Villa forum) needs a Damon.
-

Yeah that's a toss-up in my head, would understand the decision either way. Same with Jedi coming in for Hourihane now Bruce says he's recovered from his illness.
-
I’d go:
A Goalkeeper
Elmo Axel Chester Hutton
McGinn Bjarnason Hourihane
Green Grealish
Kodjia
yep..decent
I'd push Green right up front and then get him and Kodjia to drift wide. We know neither of them are particularly good at holding the ball up or winning it in the air so put them against the fullbacks instead and then have them cut in. If it means the centre backs separate a little then even better for Grealish, McGinn, Hourihane coming from deep.
-

My concerns as well, how times have we had a large majority going for a win and Villa then go and let us down.
Hope not, but wouldn't be surprised that Bruce may go again with Adomah instead of Green. Also if things aren't going well, he's gotta give the Rushian at least 30 mins, he does tend to leave it late before making changes. RHM looked good on Monday in the short time he was on.
-
How the fuck are we 21/20 to win this one? It's the bet of the century.

Cheers fellas. About time that was updated.
-
wonder who will start in goal? nylund or moreira?
my money would be on nylund.
-
Looking forward to the first home game of the season:
A mid-summer's night dream I had that Jack scored a wonder goal infront of the Holte to send the home fans into ectasy and seal the 3 points. I must have last season's screamer v bluebirds on loop in my brain.
From going from the proverbial rock bottom a few week ago to going into the Wigan game with renewed energy and enthusiasm, you couldnt have flipped the situation any quicker than a fresh ommelette. The relief when 2 billionaires arrived in the nick of time to rescue the club from the shambles it had become, in my mind may have come from William McGregor himself - "Lord what fools these mortals be!"
A steal from Hibs with my scottish (celtic supporting despite living in Edinburgh) cousins seething that we have bought a gem north of the border for a knockdown means we are due some luck in the transfer window. If only the trio that cost us £17 million and not contributing anything can be moved on would complete the summer. Unfortunately most of the football world don't take leave of their senses and would take these wasters on.
I assume Billionaires dont like to sell a prize asset for a knockdown like the rest of us and profoundly told those North London pricks who had the gall to offer Onomah and £2m in the beginning to go away. We still have Jack and he wont be sold in January despite the newspapers and sky's best efforts.
I genuinely believe we are half decent to mount another challenge.
And a middle finger to the twat whose name now escapes me that was within a half time orange of removing Taylor from left back, the allure of the cottager's coin proved too irresistible.
-

That comment by our new owner to Tottenham that we were not interested in their money was the biggest boost for morale that I have known for many years.
Absolutely. I was all for giving up a couple of months ago but that gesture has restored my faith.
Anyway 4-1

I thought the stat about us not winning two games at the start of the season was bad, until I heard Derby haven't achieved it for the last 44 campaigns. Blimey!!
-
2-1 written all over it. Grealish with all 3.
-
I think people are underestimating Wigan.
-
I think people are underestimating Wigan.
I've put us down for the win but it's not underestimating them at all, it's that I reckon our fans will suck a couple in at the Holte end through sheer force of will because of the feel good factor of Grealish staying, especially if the club can do something like announcing a new contract before the game.
-
I'd put Green on the left and stick Albert on his own up front.
Kodjia on for the last 30 mins.
-
Im not sure adomah can play that role
I'd play Kodjia but if we need someone else to start / come on, I'd be looking atRHM

I'm sure he could, he makes intelligent runs and is a good finisher.
-
Is Richie De Laet suspended?
-
Yes, for being bold in Belgium. Should be back for Yeovil, bet he's thrilled.
-
2-0. Grealish to score a 25 yard screamer.
-
Didn't know that, thought De Laet just wasn't in SB's plans again.
Anyway think 2-2 tomorrow. Our defence wasn't great v Hull and Wigan actually have goals in them this time as opposed to their toothless attack two years back.
Can see it being a pretty open game as think they'll come to attack.
-
This feels very strange but I'm actually, don't tell anyone, looking forward to this, now.
With you on that Chris. Some new signings, meet the new owners, sold out, a crescendo for Jack. It's going to be fun and we will batter them.
-
Wigan are one of the few clubs we have a losing home record against in the league. W2 L3.
-
FTF.
No excuses.
-
Given they've a weak defence I really hope we put more of our attacking players out than we did v hull, where Kodjia was a bit isolated and didn't do a good job of a lone striker
Get green in that team!
-
Gone for a win - based on nothing more than early season blind optimism and the huge feel good factor generated by new investment into the club, telling spurs to fuck off over grealish and the away win at Hull. I’d really love to be at VP for this match. Hope everyone who goes has a top day out and 3 points in the bag for us.
-
Woken up excited. One of those where I just want to put my Villa shirt on and go straight there.
Holte is going to be rocking, new players are going to be awed at the place they've come to, and the reception he gets is going to erase any pangs of disappointment Jack might have.
We're going to smash Wigan in the best display since the Dingles didnt know what hit them.
I might even cut Bruce some slack. Unless he plays Taylor again.
Villa are back, and it feels good...
-
Wigan will be full of confidence I would imagine but we should have enough to take the points. 3-1 Kodjia off the mark, Grealish and a Hutton overhead kick.
-
I really, really hope Kodjia has a better game. A goal for him would do him the world of good.
-
I think you'd see a different player if he scores, he looks very low on confidence at the minute.

Harvey Knibbs is 3rd favourite to score first with Skybet? Can we read anything into that?

Coming from the bloke who was saying with a degree of authority that Jack was certainly leaving the club with nothing to back it up.
Have a day off pal.

My team as well (except perhaps Axel for Elphick), so it definitely won't happen!

What a turn out to sell out all available seats today especially in the holiday period .....
Few wins and the Upper Trinity will be open every game !!
Lets make it a cracking atmosphere today and celebrate what seems a certain Jack goal in front of the Holte
3 points and top of the table tone - what a start that would be after the close season

Jack certainly was leaving when we were buggered financially. I am glad that changed. I recommend you wind your neck in though.

Left the house with a spring in my step and actually really wanting to be there for a change. I like it.

Wow that is impressive. Early season games notorious for us not getting much over 36k (when Upper Trinity was open in the prem) due to holidays and stuff.
Better get my Reading tickets quick then (would imagine it the returning masses will skip likes of Brentford in mid week).
We must've sold a fair few more season tickets since Wes and Nas turned up I imagine.

Indeed. Jack man of the match and a debut goal for McGinn.
-
"He's still one of our own, still one of our own..."
Knowing us, after all the euphoria, we'll lose or draw! The memory of that post-Wolves QPR game still lingers...
Enough! It's a new season!
-
I am convinced we will destroy this today. The players are bang up for it.

Bang goes my guess the crowd!

That would mean the upper Witton holds 8-9k which is a stretch.
