Always good to start with a win, Hull helped us a lot by being utterly awful and yet they still could have scored a few. We looked better with the Russian and Green on. Who would have thought pace would be good.

Superb result, that will go some way to putting the negativity of the summer behind us, build on this, take it into the Wigan game, another 3 points and we are right in contention.

We’ve put away a side that will finish in the bottom 6-8 I think.  That’s a plus given some of the results last year.

Lots to improve on. Though RHM looked lively when on given he’s had no pre season.  Would start him ahead of Kodjia and probably Green as well ahead of Albert.

Great to get off to a good start unlike the last couple of seasons, helped along by a really really poor Hull side who look set to struggle hard this year. Hutton's goal impressive and so well deserved. Jack is off now I think. Next game will be very interesting if so...

Pleasantly surprised to win that.

Coming from behind to win is certainly a rare event.

We'll have tougher tests, Hull will be bottom 8 again.

Good result.  Attritional football as usual, punctuated by a really great moment from Hutton.  If we lose Grealish those incoming loans will have to be something a bit special, or attritional might well turn into something less appealing.

Oh, and no more Elphick please.

Take that all day long but poor at times. Desperate for another centre half as Elphick is poor and a centre forward who can hold the ball up. Take the three points and run.

Jack is staying. He's not good enough for a Prem starting eleven.

Our defence is shonky.

The Elmo and Hutton goals show me that if you run at these defences they crap themselves!

Our midfield and forwards should take note.

Ducking awful referee.

With Bruce still in charge I'm not expecting entertainment, I'll just be thankful if we win despite the negativity and boredom.  So job done I suppose. That said Hull were fucking awful and we were, for the most part, only slightly better.  The tempo is still way too slow.  RHM and Green looked far better than Kodija and Adomah in a fraction of the time.  A decent side will tear our defence a new one. Still you can only beat what's in front of you so fair enough.

Good win in the end but I'm not sure what it means because that Hull defence was fucking dire.

Taylor and Elphick were shit, Suliman and Clark wouldn't be a drop in quality as replacements but it appears the replacements are coming in soon anyway.

Whelan and Hourihane just aren't mobile enough to be a 2 which meant Jack was playing far deeper than he should be and wasn't having the impact we want.

That said, points on the board is the most important thing today.

Good result, average performance.
They could easily have scored a couple more. Credit to Steer, thought he played well.

Absolutely, he keeps the ball, is available all the time, passes it to a team mate, controls it in tight situations and sees the simple forward pass.
How many other players on the pitch can do all of that?
God we will miss him.

A workmanlike win against a very poor hull side

Kodjia was awful we desperately need a new striker and if as expected grealish goes a creative link. That said grealish played so deep tonight he doesn’t affect the game enough for me.

A lot of work to do but a win is a win

In a vacuum I'd rather have Leeds' manager than ours, but out of the vacuum it's fair to say our team really looked like a team that's played together for a few years and are comfortable in themselves, which in football is a real intangible.

Much better 2nd half. Felt we stood 5/10 yards higher up and punished their mistakes by putting them under.

Our out ball to Kodjia was a bit aimless. We need to work on threading it wide more, but to do that you need pace and territory.

Good goals 2nd half. Couldn't believe how poor the making was for Elphicks!

Dominated I felt without threatening and then 2nd half, it felt like a proper controlled away performance. We need strengthening no doubt.

I can still taste the pyro! 2 rows in front, tastes vile.

Absolutely mental scenes when McCafu scores his wonder goal. Bloody brilliant.

I’d have loved to have been in the crowd for that Hutton goal.

I thought Hutton was the only one who could hold his head up high in our relegation season and I rate him highly as a player and a character. I met him on the Villa team's Christmas visit to Acorns last year and he was a really nice guy. Although he had a presence about him that made me think I wouldn't fancy having a fight with him.

I fancied us to nick it by one goal tonight, but the manner of our win was better than I expected. I think Hull will finish in the lower third (reference for the Bowie fans there) of the championship but any win in this tricky and unpredictable division is a good win.

Steer did well.  Good competition for keeper now to keep them all on their toes.
Our defence looks shaky.  Two reasons for this.  tommy is a pony and Hourihane and Whelan cannot defend for shit.  Whelan is slow and holds us back.  I want to see more from Conor too.  Hutton was great.  Taylor was average and I hope we sign the Bristol City lad.   Get an upgrade on Whelan before the window shuts and we have a much better midfield.  Grealish, for him, I thought had a quiet game.  Albert, if I was made a decent offer, I would consider letting go.  Kodjia, needs time, but is a selfish twat and consistently makes the wrong decision.  Elmo, a couple of moments of quality but overall, I thought he was very ordinary.

A great win, particularly first up and gives the club some real positivity.  Well done Bruce for upping the tempo second half, it was much needed.  Hull will struggle this season I think. Important that we don't feel too sorry for these teams and beat them regardless.

Steer - carried on from last season's good cup performances. With a new Norwegian keeper coming in from the German second division, I hope Steer continues to get his chance. (I assume, as Bruce didn't like Gollini much, that the young Spanish keeper won't play in the league.)

Taylor - in 2018 he hasn't been the player he was in 2017.

Elphick - good goal but he still gives me kittens. One thing you could say about Terry last year is that he wasn't Elphick.

Chester - didn't really notice him, which is a good sign for a central defender

Hutton - great goal, great guy and looks more solid in a back three than Elphick

Whelan - will do a job for one more season. Would like to see more of Doyles-Hayes though.

Hourihane - Similar sort of 7/10 performance as last season. Apparently he ran games for Barnsley.

Grealish - by his standards a quiet game but still oozes quality.

Adomah - I wonder if peak Adomah has now passed. Good squad player though.

Kodja - this was one of his fall-over, throw-your-arms-up-in-frustration performances.

Elmohamady - great finish for his goal even if, like Hutton's goal, it was somewhat aided by that backpedaling Hull defence.

Subs

Green - added to his pre-season performances, looks ready to pick up where he left off early last season,

Hepburn-Murphy - some nice touches and movement.

Bjarnson - managed to get booked in a short space of time.

Summary:
If we can keep Grealish, then hopefully Steer can replace Johnson and Green can supply some of the goals and assists that Snodgrass gave us. So, we need to find a central defender from somewhere. (The Bristol City lad we are linked with is a left-back, I think..?)

Not a great performance but a very good result, so job done.  We urgently need a striker who isn't Kodjia, he looked moodier than Jordan Ayew after losing a fiver and finding a pound.  Good to see Green and RHM get a run out although I'd have started with the former at least. Whelan is rubbish, Taylor is dreadful so we could do with at least three new players I reckon.

Not sure Jack contributed a lot tonight so don’t worry we can still be good without him
But compare his touch to that of Thor. The ball just sticks to him. We will miss him so much if he goes.

What did you think of the cross for the 1st goal?

I thought Wheelan played well tonight, something I thought I’d never say. We’re still far too sloppy all over the place and Kodja is a pale shadow of what he was. Wasn’t impressed with the starting line up but it was okay against  rubbish Hull.  I want to see more of RHM and Green together as pace is what we need.

Good result, even if the performance wasn't great for long periods of the game.  Grealish apart, the rest just looked limited and laboured. I thought Green and RHM definitely added something when they came on and would have liked to see them on earlier really.  Whelan has been getting some stick on this thread, but I honestly thought he did OK in the holding role and kept the ball moving. After a shaky start, I thought Taylor did OK and kept Bowen pretty quiet (didn't realise he was the non-league striker Sam Bowen's son!!).

Just like last season and the one before, a lot of long balls to a centre forward who is either not capable or willing to challenge for them.  We are going to continue to play that way under Bruce, so it's paramount we bring in a centre forward who can hold the ball up and is a real nuisance up there.

All in all though, a good win and a good start to the season.  Looking back on where we were a month or so ago, plenty of reasons to feel optimistic if we do some good business in the coming weeks.

I don't think we played very well, the manager set us up defensively, again,

However, if it takes a few weeks for Bruce to get his shit together, potentially with more players coming in, then much rather we win matches like this than lose them in the meantime.

RHM’s hold-up play looked good. We could look at playing Kodija off RHM.

Whelan did pretty well. Players in that position rarely get credit.

Not sure why we bothered with this Portuguese keeper if we’re bringing in a number one because Steer looked solid and didn’t put a foot wrong.

As poor as they were Hull waltzed through our defence on four occasions any team with a bit of quality we would have been in trouble. Green looks ready to be a proper footballer now and lots of pace. Kodjia is a shadow of when he first joined us not sure what the problem is but he needs replacing. We have started with a win lets hope its a sign.

Grealish seemed to be playing deeper than Hourihane which limited us going forwards, Hull were dog shite but im glad we took full of advantage of it. A very favourable set of fixtures to come, hopefully points on the board and some momentum picked up early on.

Well something ! All defender scored the 3 goals
Elmo getting a goal !
But even more Hutton !

Well played the win determined performance and had better quality

Was concerning falling behind and as pleasing to take the equaliser as quick as possible.
Also concerning the slow start and first half in parts though some good play and stepped it up second half

Great to start with a win . Hull had limitations so was a win with cavets .
There will be bigger tests to come

Up the villa !

As I said, I think we need to give him a run of 5-6 games.  If he can grab a goal or 2 it  will do him the world of good, he's had, pretty much, 14 months of injuries and comeback games, he will be rusty and needs some patience, especially playing up front on his own.  If RHM is the backup and is offering the same as tonight from the bench then I think we can afford to let him ease his way back into things.

What we do need to change though is getting Green into the team.  His pace and dribbling hurts teams and drives their defence deeper, in a squad as slow as ours he's worth his weight in gold, he'd be right behind Grealish and Chester in the order of names in the team for me.

Not much in it for the first hour and Hull practically gave us the first two goals.
Wonderful goal from McCafu and I think it was a goodbye from Jack unfortunately.
It was a shame Green didn't start but when he and RHM came on it livened things up.
Prior to that we seemed to be reverting to the often used hoof to Koj with predictable results.
Great result though and we move on, just hope we can keep Jack, counting down the hours until Thursday 5 o'clock.

The perfect start to the season.

Everyone understands what a slog this is. There are no undeserved points, or lucky wins, just the spoils to be stashed away after each game to be cashed in at the end of the season.

From when he was appointed I said SB should be given three seasons whatever happened in order that some sort of stability on the playing side was restored.  I have stood by that, and  continue to do so.

A win is what we needed and a win is what we got, as has been said, I do not think you will see that starting 11 very often this season, thank god.
The Kodja thing needs deeper thought, Hogan comes here is crap, Kodja is going the same way, maybe just maybe it is because both are fed up of balls going over there heads, when they both pay better off the shoulder of the last defender, not being asked to be a mixture of Lochead, Withe and Macanally, which they are not. Play to their strengths and we may have options.

I thought we played pretty well overall but will face more difficult tests obviously. I think the team will be a bit better in a months time, maybe sooner, certainly Elphick scares the shit out of me still (although fair play with his goal). You wouldn't want Whelan or Taylor starting as first choice either and although Steer did fine I think we'll get an upgrade there too which might be better in the tougher games. Hourahane will play better than that too and Kodjia will hopefully once he's fully recovered. Hutton and Elmo close run for MOTM.

I thought it was the most dull game ( typical Bruce set up ) and we were clueless until the houriane freekick , not sure what time that was . Then the introduction of Green gave us a little lift and a defensive howler gave us the lead and after that there was only going to be one winner , even wit Ephicks cock up at 3 1 .

No one is buying Kodja so dont worry about him going , he looked rubbish with RHM offerring so much more in his cameo and was suprised Green did not start.

Hull were absolute garbage even thou as people have said they did cut through us at times , we need Axel in that back four.  Taylor needs to go , lets hope this bisto guy turns  .

We have Jedi and RDL to come in too , I would have started with BB too but first game and 3 pts so Im happy with those .

Loved Huttons goal , proper Ricky Villa and the two mature women at the front of the crowd going mad and trying to grab him brought a small tear to the eye. Magnificent .

You're getting predictably dull now.

There's never a bad time for Christmas Jameson to have a pop at... well anybody, or anything, really.
Agree

Everyone who lives near Leeds has every right to bring them up at every turn and have a good old pop. Having had the misfortune myself for too many years, it's exactly the thing to do.

As for being dull, where's the pots and kettles?

I don't blame Steer for the goal at all. He punched it all the way outside the area, there were a sea of Villa players in the box. It was Tommy's fault, and I feel he felt the same, hence his lack of celebration for the equaliser.

I just wonder whether it is felt those two make more of an impact coming on in the latter stages at the moment JP.  Thought was definitely the case with Green last season as his pace caused real problems against tiring defenders.

Disagree.

1. It was a slow-paced* looping cross at easily keeper height. He should have come out and caught it but he hesitates so by the time he does get there he has no option but to punch it.

2. Punching the ball has its place especially if a fast paced ball is whipped in at an awkward angle. If you punch one of them the chances are its going to fly in the opposite direction at pace with an opposition player unlikely to be able to punt it gently back in. *If its a slow looping cross on the other hand....

Unsurprisingly reminiscent of last season, on occasion looking terrible, on occasion looking really but most of the time looking average. I have always rated Elmo and think he was underated in his contribution last season, and Hutton got what he deserved after years of trying. Otherwise I'm deeply concerned about Elphick and Kodja. The former looks as lost as ever defending and cannot be considered much further if we want to mount a promotion charge. The latter just looks miles from the player he once was. Even while waiting to kick off he appeared to be staring into space, his mind anywhere but on the game. Our style doesn't help I'll give him that but he still looks out of it. It's a good start but plenty to do.

Elphick and Chester looked very rusty.  Hopefully they'll improve as a partnership, but a better quality team could have had 3-4 goals.

Kodjia looked awful.  But we know he has enough quality to make it worth persisting with for a bit longer I think.

Taylor did better than I expected, but I'd like to see Hutton or a new guy on the left and De Laet on the right.

Green has to be trusted to start sooner rather than later and Rushian looks like he could be influential for us.

It was a pretty dour performance, but good to get the ball rolling and start with a win.

It would not surprise me to see us return to the pre season line up of 3 at the back when Tuanzebe is up to speed and then Elphick will be back on the bench.

We were okay. scoreline flattered us somewhat. Elphick was dodgy i agree but the goal was all steer's fault with a completely duff punch. You can only beat what's in front of you so fair play because the 1st game of the season away is not an easy fixture. Sterner tests ahead i think

The punch wasn’t the best but neither was it the worst, it made the edge of the area but the volley back was really well placed and Elphick made a hash of trying to get to it. Nine times out of ten you would get away with that.

I missed the first ten minutes but from what I read on here, their goal sounded like a howler but it wasn't really. It was just a well taken shot which should have been dealt with better.

Very slow paced game and some of our passing was laboured.

Taylor - nothing wrong but offers nothing going forward - hope the Bristol kid can put some juice into the LB position

Adomah - 80% of the time flatters to deceive and his final ball is usually left wanting - maybe try Kodia there if we get another striker in

Kodjia - far too isolated at times as Grealish was too far away from him as he kept coming deep for the ball. Really annoyed by some of his antics for fouls etc at times

Elphick - caught in 2 minds with their goal. Well take  goal for us though. Must admit heart goes in my mouth each time he has possession of the ball as I expect a rick at any time.

Hourihane - Mr Anonymous again - if he does not score you forget he is on the pitch

Whelan - did the ugly stuff comfortably but plays so deep due to his lack of mobility we are left wanting when trying to break out.

Hutton - deserved goal for his graft

Elmo - took goal well and linked well with Cafu

Grealish - Does his best work in the final 3rd but spent too much time coming into the first 3rd to get the ball - maybe he wanted to be noticed more than usual?

anyone commented on how ropey Chester was yet ?

Looked very shakey to me. Presumably down to being switched sides again. Not something I'm a big fan of doing. He's clearly better on his natural side

We’re still a long way behind Leeds because of passion or something.

You're getting predictably dull now.

There's never a bad time to have a pop at dirty leeds.

There's never a bad time for Christmas Jameson to have a pop at... well anybody, or anything, really.

Take it to pm and don't involve me with internet nonsense, please.

I think ATAL might have been referring to the  most pleasant Irish whiskey. But then I am a bog man from Garrison, Fermanagh.

Bent and JPA to mention two. Ankle injuries for those two aswell. We ended up letting both go on free transfers in the end.

I'd be in favour of letting him go if the price was right.

He’s gone from playing next to John Terry to having to worry about Elphick again, as well as switching sides.  I’d get Tuanzebe in next to him instead of Elphick.

I'm probably going to get some stick for this, but I just don't see what others see in Bjarnasson.
If we get offers for him, Bunn, Gardner, Albert and Kodjia I think we ought to seriously consider them.
Add to that list the one's who have failed to be given a squad number such as Tish, McCormack, Richards etc.

It was a rubbish goal to concede, but there was more than an element of luck about it.  Their player's effort was hardly convincing, but it went in the only area of the goal where noone was situated.  I don't know if Elphick thought it was going wide or was wary about colliding with the post, but I thought he could probably have done more.  I think the criticism of Steer is a bit harsh as he got a decent punch on it and their player had to hook it from behind him.

One thing I did pick up on from last night was that without Terry and Jedinak, we haven't got as much of a physical presence when defending set pieces.  When you factor in Taylor was playing as well, it was not the biggest back four.

I noticed after Elphick scored that Bruce made a heading motion and looked up the other end with Calderwood as if to say "why didn't he do that earlier?".

He got some stick from Villa fans after their goal so he was making a point by not celebrating. He is unnecessarily and undeservingly arrogant.
If your right that's pathetic and we need to get shot of him quickly.

I didn't think he was being arrogant, possibly realised he should have done better on their goal and didn't feel right celebrating correcting his mistake.

Chester always seemed decent with both feet to me but better centre halves have struggled swapping sides. John Terrys car crash efforts next to Matt Upson in the 2010 world cup come to mind

I don't think Elphick will be with us next week, solid pro but likely to be a backup option for us again this season. It's a left sided centre back we need ideally. Tuanzebe is hardly that and I really hope Bruce isn't going to attempt 352 again.

I'd say that's almost certainly it.  Defenders don't like making mistakes that lead directly to goals, as that's what they get judged on.  Scoring goals is nice but he definitely would have been a bit fed up with his part in their goal.

He's right sided isn't he?  He might be able to, but at his age he's unlikely to have had the experience there that you need I'd have thought.

Apparently he feels they're not ready for it yet. In which case, fair enough for me. Work on it more when the internationals come around and we've got the complete squad for the first half of the season.

Shocking team selection from Bruce.

Three top players from pre-season: Green, De Laet and Doyle-Hayes.

One of them on the bench, the other two not even in the squad!

Why do the players bother?

Still, Hull were poor, so we got away with it.

I believe DeLaet is suspended for 2 matches; the other two, I thought injured.

I like RDL - and Green and DH!
