Title: Club vs Country.
Post by: Deano's Mullet on July 11, 2018, 03:01:20 PM
I upset someone at work today when i said i would rather see the Villa win a trophy than  see England win the World Cup. Possibly controversial but if England lose tonight i will be a bit disappointed, however  i wont lose too much sleep over it, whereas Villa losing those Wembley visits in 2000, 2010, 2015 and this year really did hurt. Jack Grealish scoring at Wembley after that Maradona-ish run or Harry Kane poking in a 90th minute winner vs France... no question its Villa every time for me.
Anyone else agree with me or does the World Cup take precedence for you?

Country pride is only an issue when I am discussing football with foreign friends and a not so frequent event whilst Club football is an everyday issue and matters more in my life.

Villa is our private little pleasure. The England thing is something we share with loads of people who wont give a shit about football by the time August comes around. And obviously a fair chunk of the people you see  supporting England are fair weather or support clubs we detest domestically. I think i'm just bitter ha ha.

Victory tonight, mate?

I'm off to bed, up at 3, hopefully win in normal time, so I can have a few hours in bed before a day of lecturing!

One of the regulars on here once said to me he'd rather Villa win a corner than England a match - I'm not that extreme and of course I would like to see England win tonight, but I'd sacrifice every single ounce of England success to see Villa win a trophy once more - I don't think any level of joy or emotion from the nation team can capture the joy of seeing us lift trophies at Wembley and similarly lose finals there too.

My bug bear with England is the pseudo fans that turn up every 4 years and suddenly display emotion that belies there otherwise indifference to football as a whole - i can't stand it.

Love for England is momentary and fleeting and something that is often difficult to closely associate with. Club is what we associate with all the time. If England lose today we will be upset, shrug our shoulders and soon forget about it. When Villa lose or go through the various trials and tribulations as we have seen across the past decade it lingers all the time like black thundercloud.

always club but it’s not either/or you can suppprt and enjoy both

i watch a lot of football in my local football club with mates I’ve known for donkeys years
normally your drinking while watching with Man Utd, Chelsea, Leeds, West Ham and in my case Cobblers and Luton fans

the difference with an England game is everyone’s supporting the same side
all together it’s makes for some memorable times and a great atmosphere

where i do differ from a lot of people is i like the people who don’t like football getting involved, I have no problem if they have little knowledge about the game I won’t see them again until the next World Cup,
just for that moment the country comes together and that’s what I love

My wife hates Football but she’s coming with me tonight because it’s so big,
I’ve no problem with it more the merrier

Club for me but I’m always watching England nervously and have done for years.
I’ll be leaping around like a man possessed if we make it tonight.
But I’d swap it all for a Villa Cup win.

It is great that there’s a lot of positivity around and I’m chuffed for Southgate.

Club certainly for league and FA Cup, but if it was a choice between League Cup and World Cup it would be a toughie, i've seen Villa win the League Cup a few times, the World Cup would almost certainly be a once in a lifetime thing.

I love most Villa fans especially when Im away and I meet them , I can talk to hours with them about the Villa , Its like a weird family member .

England , nah , cant stand all these tossers getting pissed out of the skulls down the pub , singing and talking through the bloody match . They support teams I hate normally like Manure and Liverpoo and woman jumping on the bandwagon who know fuck all , yes we did win it in 66 you know.

i hope they win of course but if we go out tonight it wont feel like the play off final defeat at all.

Every tournament that horrible statistic about a rise in domestic violence by quite a percentage after an England game.

Some people use this to bash football, but week in week out, there are games with far more passion taking place up and down the country. I would think a large proportion of this statistic is those you mention, coupled with a lot of alcohol.

And let's face it. An abuser will use any excuse.

I've answered club as that what concerns me most day to day. During the WC I've asked a few acquaintances (English & Scottish) if they'd rather their team won the Champion's League or country won the European Cup and each without hesitation said the former. However I would take Ireland winning the World Cup over Villa winning the Champion's League even if it's very marginal.

This is the first time in decades that I have felt any sense of attachment to an England team, just got off the phone to a colleague where 90% of the conversation was about the game tonight and we are both feeling nervous about it. I put the change down to Southgate getting rid of the baggage of the past and a group of players who seem personable and behave as if they understand what it can mean to the country and amid all the gloom and negativity of Brexit to see a bunch of players that look like a representation of modern England makes it all the more refreshing.

The answer to the question is still Villa though.

I still haven't watched a  full game this World Cup, England playing or not...but I have got my tickets for the Villa's pre-season friendlies.
However, I will be watching the game tonight in my local and would love it if England win.

Ok, I'll buck the trend.

England winning the World Cup would be huge, simply because it's the biggest tournament in world football and I've never seen us win it.

And for the second of those reasons I equate it to seeing Villa win the FA Cup.

So out of those two I'd struggle to decide but if I had to choose England winning the World Cup over Villa winning anything other than the FA Cup then for me it would be the World Cup every time.

I'm similar. Villa winning the FA Cup and England winning the world cup are roughly equivalent, and both the things I'd like to see over anything else.

Less bothered about the European Championships, but would still put it on par with Villa winning the league cup.

Up until this WC I would have said club. The last 15 years of watching and trying to support a bunch of clowns had me losing interest. But Southgate and this squad have put my passion back for England. I was just as nervous y-day (and ultimately disappointed) as the play-off final.

I'd sooner see Villa win the FA cup in the next 10 years than England winning the World Cup. Both would be ideal though. I don't really get too arsed about England unless like last night they are in a semi final. Seen too many quarter final or worse defeats over the years, so I just cynically think it's the norm. To be fair though I am the most interested I've been since about 2002 after this and you have to give them credit for getting this far.

I was disappointed last night but I am over it now. More over it than I am over the play off final that was six or seven weeks ago. An England World Cup victory would have been hogged by the people who only watch football when a World Cup or European Championships is on. A trophy (or promotion) for Villa is one massive private party for the likes of us on here.

I'm quite isolated as a Villa fan, not really encountering many others as part of the day-to-day, so it's a deeply personal thing for me.

England success, however, is quite a warm, inclusive feeling where virtually everyone is on the same page and in life the world is a better place.

The two are not mutually exclusive but obviously Villa is our club and we get to see / support them around 50 times a season. They are a part of our daily lives and fuel a lot of our conversations whereas England is more of a summer passion. Those semi final defeats in 1990 and 1996 still hurt though.

A tournament comes along every two years and as these tournaments expand the qualifying games become easier (don't tell Italy and Holland) so there is dullness around a lot of England fixtures.

One thing I love about watching England matches in the pub is that my mates and I all support the same team. It is a rare joy and I love it. But Villa first, obviously.

Not so much this World cup as it's only got three days left but I genuinely know people at past World cups who've stopped watching the whole thing when England have been knocked out, 2014 that was after about six days.

In years gone by tournaments were far more enjoyable once England had gone out. That wasn't the case this time as the there was an absence of hysterical media hype and a group of players who had more humility than fake press-built legend status of those who have been in previous squads - Rooney, Gerrard etc. That said the relative success of this team has still attracted a following of people who claim to not stand football until there is a sniff of England doing well when they turn into experts. England is a distraction as is international football in general (which I love) but Villa is for life.

Club by a distance for me.

I feel a disconnect between myself and footballers anyway but a decade of twats like Ferdinand, Gerrard and co - as good as they were domestically - has left me quite distant from the England side.

I feel that if England were better represented, we would feel a stronger affinity for them. I think that because I see the little vignettes of Bobby Robson and his England and think, "that was an England team!".

The FA, twattish players, prices, Wembley, etc all combine to make England very hard to like. Which hurts because I want to.

It's odd because I could level the same accusations at Villa, probably to a greater degree, but for some reason they escape my ire.

Ha. I'm lucky that my mates who I tend to watch England games with support Bristol Rovers and Wednesday so I am relatively blessed. The other 2 mates who I sometimes watch with are posh Leeds fans who are very fair play "may the best team win" type merchants. They would even applaud good play by the opposition whilst I am spluttering out a string of joined up swear words. It worked out well for me when we sat next to each other at the 1996 League Cup final :)
