Brian Moore 'oh it must be and is? but there was other games. Against Everton 89' they can't believe it on the terraces but they are celebrating it none the less.
Barry Davis 'Daley it's still Daley' against wba 1990. Can't remember any quotes but he worked on the Sunderland home game in, 81.
John Moston 'and the Villa fans are roaring again' v Arsenal day we won the league. The 4-3 against wba 83 'where's it going to all end'
Gerald Sinstadt Cant remember any game but narrated the BBC Ofifical Aston Villa history video brilliantly.
Hugh Johns WITHE.! Morley! Little there it is
John Cole man 'through to mortimer whose on side!
Tony Gubba miserable commentator only the Southampton at home game in 81 comes to mind.
-
Huge 'Onds. Always. The only time someone describes the action as you fall hopelessly in love.
"One nothing Pederwithe"
-
Don’t encourage him Nev.
-
Jack Woodward.
-
Whoever does the commentary on Radio 4.
-
Forgot to mention bout Barry Davies, his voice covered our 3rd division days more than most other TV commentators.
-
Jack Woodward.
Would award Jack.

"One nothing Pederwithe"
Definitely 'One nothing' Hugh John's, takes me back to the smell of Sunday roasts in the 70s/early 80s at home!! "Ooh how did that not go in" as Dynamo Berlin hit the post at Villa Park in 1981!
And Brian Moore (along with Cloughie) and their unashamed bias towards us in Rotterdam, perhaps not a classic match to a neutral but I must have seen the whole game about 50 times and even know the commentary.
-
Brian Moore and during the early Premier League games, Tony Gubba Ian Darke and Martin Tyler.

An honourable nod to Alan Parry for the Tranmere League Cup semi second leg.

didn't he also cover the home semi final in the European Cup in 82.

Yes, thinking about it. He did the Super Cup second leg as well IIRC.
-
Alan Parry did Inter in 1994 too

Hugh Johns and Star Soccer. Not just for his Villa commentaries but his Midlands work in general. 'Big Peter Withe', 'Sid Cowans', 'Pop Robson', 'Big Larry Lloyd', 'Wee Archie Gemmill'. He was also the forgotten commentator of the 1966 World Cup final on ITV as people only remember Kenneth Wolstenholme's famous words on the BBC. Obviously George Gavin's radio work for BRMB, particularly from 1980 to 1982 as well.
-
Hugh Johns I associate with the delicious smell of roast lamb and mint sauce.

yes he the forgotten commentator of the 66 final, their footage is rare and hardly ever shown.
-
... I just saw some on you tube and he said 'there it is' just like he said villa v blues in 75.
-
Brian Moore - the best. His 1975 League Cup final commentary was exemplary. And, of course, the iconic commentary from the '82 European Cup win....
-
As Brian Moore was on the London-based the Big Match I always saw him as a pro London teams man. Rotterdam was a very pleasant exception, mind.
-
The guy who commentates on the SKY championship games seems pretty clued up on us. Has he got a Villa connection?
-
Hugh Johns I associate with the delicious smell of roast lamb and mint sauce.
Yep. He always reminds me of childhood Sunday afternoons in the 70s. Great days!
-
As an aside, a bit miffed to hear Barry Davies doing the narration to the “Motty” special on BBC 1, when Motson wasn’t fit to lace the boots of Davies as a commentator. He was the best ever in my opinion.
-
I thought they both great commentators.

I agree. Davies added to the sense of occasion, Motson irritated me in the way someone on their own with a transistor radio used to back in the day.
-
Hugh Johns, Star Soccer was better than MOTD and as soon as I hear his voice it reminds me of being 8 and eating Sunday dinner.
-
Space 1999, Star Soccer, CHiPs and The Return Of The Saint. And as Flamingo Lane has already said, the smell of your mum cooking Sunday dinner in the background. The only downer was having to go to church. Especially if you had to go to the late afternoon/early evening service rather than getting it out of the way 'early doors' by going to the morning service. Although once a month my grandad used to come round for Sunday dinner and as he only had one leg and was wheelchair bound it meant that not only did he always bring me a bar of Cadbury's dairy milk chocolate but it also meant we didn't have to go to church when he was visiting.

Rush down Sunday dinner and get the best seat for Star Soccer. The theme tune was fantastic too.

I think it was ITV4 that used to show repeats of 'The Big Match', London's version of 'Star Soccer' a few years ago. I recall seeing Peter Withe playing for Newcastle against Charlton in the second division and Graham Taylor's Watford playing a crucial third division promotion six pointer away to Brentford. Also, any time I see football footage involving SGT's Watford side I can't help thinking that once he got them promoted from the fourth division to the first division the least they could have done was build the bloke a dug out.
-
There's loads of episodes of 'The Big Match' on Youtube, i've wasted a fair few hours watching some of them. They often showed a Midlands game so you get to hear Hugh Johns in them. Sadly not so much of Star Soccer on there.
Here's a later one with Villa v Watford in the FA Cup.
Stoke v Villa

I had no problem getting the best seat in the house for Star Soccer. I was an only child (funnily enough I still am), my dad used to go to the pub with my uncle Chris (and my grandad before his health problems) twice a week, every Thursday night and Sunday lunchtime and my mum used to listen to the radio in the kitchen. If I remember right BRMB used to do a thing connecting people on the phone to relatives abroad (usually Australia and maybe hosted by Ed Doolan?) and then do an Irish music show (Stephen Rhoades?) So my dad was out on the lash, my mum was listening to the radio in the kitchen and I had the living room and sofa* to myself.
*Actually I might have had my own bean bag in the living room by that point. Ask your parents kids.
-
Hugh Johns for me also great day's brilliant theme tune.

Certainly not the most synonymous, but I love this commentary from Martin Tyler. "Merson...it's dipPING OH! PAUL MERSON!"
-
His name escapes me, again, but who used to do our commentaries on European nights on BBC radio?

Franksy :)

What a dire shit game that was until the last minute... I remember it better than most games as I was watching it round my mate Shaun's house with our brothers and his dad.
-
Just sit back and listen to the sublime, dulcet tones of Hugh Johns.
-
Hugh John's Star Soccer commentaries would start with him welcoming us to whatever ground it was and then giving us the background to the match over random shots of the players warming up in the style of their choosing which was sometimes half-hearted in those days.
Defenders would often "hoike" the ball forward rather than simply clear it.
The midlands bit would finish with a pitch side interview with Billy Wright every week.
There was something very comforting about that programme.

He also always used to introduce the referee and where he was from. Although there was usually a caption on the screen telling you as well.

"Referee Daryl Reeves from Uxbridge"

"Referee Daryl Reeves from Uxbridge"
That was the name and place I thought of but I wasn't sure if I had remembered right and couldn't be bothered to check it up. Our barmy bus load from Newtown and the black country drank in Uxbridge before and after the Bolton semi.
-
As much as I thought of him as ordinary - Hugh Johns. The magic moment though belongs to Brian Moore.

Johnathan Pearce on MOTD when we beat Chelsea a few years back "Look at the Holte end, listen to the Holte end"!
-
Johnathan Pearce on MOTD when we beat Chelsea a few years back "Look at the Holte end, listen to the Holte end"!
That was Guy Mobray.
-
Pearce "His face tells the story, his day has been ruined, his day has been completely ruined."
-
His name escapes me, again, but who used to do our commentaries on European nights on BBC radio?
David Wigley. Used to regularly suffer from voice break excitement.

Wasn't Guy Mowbray also the commentator who said something along the lines of "In case you were wondering, Gary Cahill doesn't have a Brazilian passport" after his spectacular goal against Small Heath?

I think that was Conor McNamara.

That is right. Conor McNamara is an excellent commentator. Unfortunately on this thread I have proved that I am far from excellent at remembering which commetator came out with which comment!

-
Ah!
Star Soccer with Sunday lunch!
-
It has to be Hugh Johns.
-
Mowbray has an awful 'excited' voice - was he the dick who came to ''Agueroooo'' ?
