Title: Fond Memories of Games We Have Lost
Post by: Dave P on February 26, 2018, 01:03:42 PM
Shamelessly stolen from Owlstalk after being directed to there this week. What games do you hold dear despite the wrong result.  Mine would be the 4-3 v Newcastle in 96/97.  Dwight Yorke was unstoppable that day.  I imagine Arsenal 2 Villa 0 in 1981 will get a lot of love here as well.

Villa 2 Liverpool 4 in 1982 - 3 down in no time, back to 2-3 at half time, battered their goal in the 2nd half before a late Ian Rush goal ended our comeback - but a great game from what I recall.

We technically beat Athletico Madrid on the night (2-1) but lost on away goals in 1998 - but what an occasion.

1971 League Cup Final.
Steve Bastard Perryman and Martin Bastard Chivers left a 13 year old kid in tears but I was so proud to be a Villa fan at Wembley.

Manchester City away in December 1992. A relative of mine persuaded a handful of us who used to go in the same car to away games to join what became known as 'the barmy bus' to Manchester City. We left from The Bell pub in Marston Green with a mini bus driver dressed as General Bombthebastards from the Kenny Everett show (I can't remember if we hadn't been told about the fancy dress bit or if we just hadn't bothered). we got there by mid morning and went to a pub. When one of us pointed out that our driver was drinking our concerns were met with the answer "he's only drinking halves". We lost 2-0 and ended up in another pub after the game. It was run by a guy who had previously run The Three Magpies in Hall Green and he was mates with a couple of our travelling party. He had framed pictures of the previous weeks News Of The World on the walls as he had held a Christmas party for the local police and there had been some 'adult entertainment' going on upstairs which had involved coppers and strippers who did extras. During our after match drinking the general/our driver was still drinking his halves. I got dropped off at God knows what time at a bus stop round the corner from my parents house where I still lived. I got off the barmy bus, threw up at the bus stop and walked home.

I hated it at the time, but being one of the few (5,595) at Selhurst Park on Easter Monday 1987 when Charlton beat us 3-0 and as good as relegated us has in hindsight become my badge of honour/I was there game .

One of my favourite away trips was to Notts County in the nineties, terrible match, 0-0, summed up by Richardson and Staunton doing a free kick routine that involved them both running over the ball and leaving it to nobody. It absolutely lashed it down, it was freezing, there was a small turnout of Villa fans and we spent a lot of the time not actually watching the match but we had such a laugh. Also got hopelessly lost after the match but it's one of my fondest memories of watching Villa.

That Notts County game was the coldest I have ever been at a game, along with with a ZDS cup game against Forest at Villa Park one December (a Friday night just before Christmas I think). The wettest I have ever been at a game was at Huddersfield around the start of the season in 1987.

I couldn't believe how many Juve fans were there. Legend has it that every Italian restaurant in England was closed that night. My abiding memory is of Rossi's early goal and the whole of the Witton Lane stand celebrating.

Also, if I remember right as well as Platini and Boniek who had both got to the World Cup semi finals with France and Poland a few months before they had Zoff, Gentile, Cabrini, Scirea, Tardelli and Rossi from the winning Italian team and Bettaga who had loads of Italy caps but I think missed out on that final.

We lost 1-2 to Leeds at home in our first game back in Division One in 1975. I'd never seen us in the top league before, my formative years being spent witnessing our descent and return from Division 3. I can still remember my disbelief at seeing Villa amongst the Div One fixtures.Leeds were a good side then but we held our own heralding a great few years. Think one of theirs was a penalty. Looking back it was great to see Charlie Aitken in the team having stuck with us through the tough times.

Yep, Meadow Lane that night remains the coldest I've ever been at a game. Wasn't that the night your cousin turned up in shirt sleeves and was let into the seats from the open terrace in a desperate but rather fruitless attempt to get warm?

I'm also going to say the European Cup home leg against Juventus.  There are many layers to my memories of that match and what it means, some of which I've mentioned before.  However, in purely footballing terms, the fact that for a fifteen minute spell leading up to Sid's equalizer my club as Champions of Europe bossed a team comprising half the previous summer's World Cup winning team - plus in Platini arguably the best European player of his generation - remains a summit I doubt I will ever see us stand on again.

I was a bit slow on the uptake reading your post. I was going to say I have never attended a game with any of my cousins but then it clicked that you were talking about the fascinating character who is married to my cousin. I can't claim to remember that incident at all but firstly I trust your memory and secondly it very much sounds like something he would do.

I used to love it when, during the period of several months he decided to join us on away trips he would disappear to the toilet and come back with his 'war stories' about all the aggro he had witnessed in the five minutes he had been gone for. Usually with the line "It's going off everywhere" when the rest of us had neither seen nor sensed any trouble whatsoever.

We had a similar match at home to Liverpool in the late 90s. Were top of the league at the time. Fowler scored a hat-trick, Dion got two and should've got his own treble but had a penalty saved by David James and Collymore got sent off for trying to snap in half Steve Harkness.

I remember the City fans at Villa Park in 1993 with their 'good luck Villa from the City of Manchester' banner. And nobody will ever convince me that Keith Curle didn't deliberately 'hand' us that penalty. I also remember a bit of a love in with the Arsenal fans at Highbury around the same time. We were vying for the title with United and they had two cup finals coming up against Wednesday. They started singing anti United songs and we responded by teaching them a couple of songs about Trevor Francis, much to their and our amusement.

Although I have used a bit of artistic licence telling those stories on this thread as we won both games.

Apparently, Curle told Shaun Teale at the PFA bash the week before we played Man City that we would get a penalty in the game .

Alex Alex Cropley from this site told me about it before the game started but I didn't believe him. When Curle inexplicably handled the ball in the box (under absolutely no pressure) we stared at each other in disbelief

Yes mental game even just playing it there as the Trinity was getting rebuilt.

I believe the ref was called Dieter Schocher.

He gave two penalties and sent off three (two for us and one for them) and blew up early before some of the players actually had to point to the stadium clock which showed 85 minutes.

I think Channel 5 showed the game live so there may be highlights of it somewhere, maybe on Villaboy's youtube channel.

One of the few from recent memory was a 2-3 defeat at The Etihad.

I'd gone down with a few mates who were all Citeh fans and was absolutely dreading it - especially as I was sat in the home end - and had been confidently predicting 0-4 or 0-5 before the game. My predictions looked spot but I was amazed when we pulled a two goal deficit back courtesy of Carlos Sanchez and Tom Cleverly only for fecking Fernandinho to win in it the 93rd minute.

To listen to me after the game you would have thought it was us who had got the last minute winner!

Two things of note.

1:54 - A lovely little shuffle from Sid who seconds later appears from nowhere in the box to score.

3:08 - a truly exquisite pass from Platini for their second and a top clash finish for Boniek, I could watch something like that on loop for hours and still not get bored.

I know what you mean. The only thing I describe it as was slide rule football. I'd never seen football like it before and very rarely since. Mesmerising to watch. Juventus had tonnes more flair but both great teams on the night.

Tranmere away for me in the league cup.
I lower than a snakes belly..........and then the big man scores to keep us in the tie.
I'll always remember a fellow fan putting his arm round me at the end of the game. He assured me Dalian's goal would be enough to see us through at Villa Park

We lost but watching Celta Vigo in the inter-toto ( I think) at the Hawthorns.  They were tremendous to watch and in patticular had two Russians playing for them, Mostovoi and Karpin
who we could not get near. I'm sure there was a good reason for playing at WBA but I've forgotten why.
Ginola and Alpay were also introduced to the crowd that night.

They found asbestos in one of our stands. Whilst it was being removed we played at West Brom.

Wasn’t it due to us redeveloping the Trinity Road stand and we didn’t have the basic facilities for UEFA competition such as a drug testing room etc?

Asbestos was found in the new Witton Lane stand that we finished in house and on the cheap, pretty sure that was mid 90s as it wasn't too long after it was finished and they realised anyone above 3 foot tall couldn't sit in the Lower Witton. It was during the work to increase legroom they found blue(?) asbestos.

Spartak may have narrowly beaten us with a last gasp goal that night but they passed us off the park. I was twelve and was blown away by the skill they showed.
Remember it well, clung on for the draw for what seemed like an eternity until the "D" of the last second and the buggers scored to put us out - from going through to going out in literally the blink of an eye.......

Although not actually a defeat, but at the time it felt like it - The 2-2 draw (which was also the aggregate score) against QPR in the home semi final leg of the 1977 League Cup.

As I remember we went ahead, were pegged back (no away goals rule then in the LC at all of course).  I seem to remember it went into extra time and we scored again to go ahead 2-1 - then they got a very late penalty which Burridge saved - only for (I think Eastoe) them to score shortly after - having victory snatched away felt like we'd lost.  Of course at "neutral" Highbury shortly afterwards Brian Little firmly put them in their place.

Seem to remember laughing at the Home game against NK Varteks. They had a fat striker with white boots, who looked like Ginola.

Anyway, he scored a hat trick against us.
