4-5-1
1 attacking player on the bench
Bjarnason over O'Hare

All against a team missing half a defence. Boring bastard.

2 attacking players if you don't mind. Or are you forgetting Samba?

I think he is assuming our quality will lead to us scoring one way or another so he just wants to keep it as tight as possible at the back.

And to be fair thats an attacking starting 11.

Snodgrass and Onamah lucky to be starting, Hogan lucky to be on the coach.

It reads like a 4-3-3 to me with options on the bench. Of course Bruce might decide to go 4-5-1 and hoof the ball all night up to Davis, who will be marked by two central defenders. Then sub Davis in the 78th minute.

It's ours to lose and on paper at least, we should have too much for them.

Bjarnason must look like Messi in training. He genuinely cannot kick a football. What has O'Hare got to do to be involved?

Snodgrass and Onamah lucky to be starting, Hogan lucky to be on the coach.

Not really as that's pretty much every fit first team squad player we have, so not exactly a lot of other options.

Seems very defensive against a team with an injury crisis at the back. If we don't win, I'll be unimpressed with these tactics, particularly given how much better we were once we switched to two forwards on Sunday.

We shall see how he has em play but in theory

Davis
Hourihane
Odomah
Onomah
Snodgrass

Thats 5 players players who all naturally want to attack, so I have hope :)

He has to keep pretending that Hogan can play football by putting him on the bench.
Title: Re: Preston v Villa Match Thread

It's all well and good saying he should be doing XYZ but it's easier said than done when pretty much no other attacking option is fit. I'm no Bruce fan but not sure what else he could do apart from start Hogan which then leaves us zero attacking options to change things if they aren't working, apart from sticking Samba up front.

So unfit players. I don't blame him for not risking them, we need them for the 31 league games that are still to come rather than risking them in the first team too soon. I can just imagine the reaction to him bringing one of them on tonight and they get crocked for months.

If that was our match day squad when everyone is fit i'd be mightily pissed off, but given who is available there's not much else to be done.

An opportunity to redeem himself against a depleted Preston side. Along with Snodgrass.

Reasonable point but it was almost like having 10 men at times on Sunday. A similar performance and we'll struggle even more so a gamble not worth taking for me.

I think it becomes awkward for the opposite player when he has the ball and it's also easier for him to tackle coming inside when most wide players cut in nowadays too.

Because he's not comfy with his left foot he's not bombing forward and making mistakes in the final 3rd and getting caught out up field.  When he stays back and just gets on with defending he's fine.

Johnstone - nothing to do.
Defence and Whelan - excellent.
Other 4 midfielders - all had their good moments but hit and miss.
Davis - Another decent display considering his age.
Preston - shite but at least we're not missing opportunities to capitalise.
Penalty - definitely but we'll take a bit of luck, it balances out.

Now I think about it, it actually makes quite a lot of sense. He likes to cut inside off the line quite a lot, he'd do it at RB and then find himself on his left and struggle with the end product.

He does this now from LB, uses his pace and is able to produce a bit more quality.

Who would have thought Hutton would turn into Phillip Lahm when he went to left back. Incredible, he looks miles more comfortable than at right back.

So it's Hutton dressed as Lahm
Nice work!

Changed my mind definite penalty.

I can see why it wasn't given because the ball goes off to the left, it looks like Chester has got his foot to it.

Just saw the pen appeal again. Definitely a pen but the bird called it right. The angle of the ball after the tackle made it look like Chester got a touch on the ball.

Snod awful as ever.

Yeah. We all despise assists for 12th minute goals. Huh?
Wow he took a corner...give him MOTM now.

Anything to add now...?
Yeah, scored....Jason Lee scored a couple once....still shit.

And how depressed will you get by a 3-0 away lead??!
Very if he scores the third.
There comes a point in every argument /debate where you can keep face and admit that you might have been wrong. After that you lose all respect. Just sayin
I'm joking...fucks sake!
Ok. Ya got me
I'm not a fan of LOL'ing and smileys...a lot think I'm a c*** here, they're right!

My Mum used to get like this. Gin it was.    (I would just remind her that Leandro Bacuna used to play where Robert Snodgrass does... J)

Have to disagree with that.  I think he has has had a good half there and has largely controlled things in there.

I wondered if the ref played advantage seeing that they had still got the ball, but then you don't really play advantage when it is a penalty.

I wonder if Neil Taylor was left on the bench due to an incident that occurred yesterday.

My wife has just informed me that his little daughter broke off the rear view mirror in his Audi Q7  and he arranged with her to book it in to get it fixed. Another Villa/Audi connection that has resulted in my son collecting another autograph.

I know this is against the vibe of a positive thread, but I don’t think we have shown much quality tonight. PNE are awful, all over the place, but they are still a threat and, mistakes excepted have coped with us. Davis is isolated and neither Bert nor Snodgrass have beaten their part time, makeshift fullbacks. They should be giving them a torrid time, but they aren’t.

That's 3 points in the bag.

Now on to another 3 against Sheffield Wednesday, which I'm coming to, and cementing our top 6 place!

UTV!

Did you just get out of a Delorean? Because it’s 2-0 in the game I’m watching with about 1/2 hour to go.

He said that’s 3 points in the bag with 1/2hr to go
He did but you were on about the score. Ah I see what you mean now.

I don't think he was.

Good decision by Bruce.  We just look so much better with him up front.

TBF, I realise they have a decimated defense, but we won't be playing a very poor Preston team every week.

'Really pleased with the result tonight; & some good performances too (i.e. Davis, Terry, Hutton, Snoddy). I thought we were a bit sloppy second half and could have won the game by a more convincing margin - as we had the opportunities. Still, it's heartening to see us snaffling another 3 points and gaining yet another clean sheet. Onward & upward.  :)

Who would have thought Hutton would turn into Phillip Lahm when he went to left back. Incredible, he looks miles more comfortable than at right back.
Same here-Right back and played a lot of games at left back-it adds a different dynamic to defending and attacking. Attackers and defenders have to change tactics against you.

He does. It’s quite bizarre. Very comfortable for some odd reason.

I'm right footed and played down the left for years, but I always preferred being out on the right.
