Title: Preston North End vs Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Bad English on October 31, 2017, 05:25:51 AM
The papers speak of a defensive crisis up at Deepdale. I'm having trouble believing Bruce will go for the jugular. 1-3 to Villa in spite of his efforts.

Taking my 4 year old to this one.

My in-laws all support PNE and last year was embarrassing - We need to put it right this year. I think we will win comfortably by at least a two goal margin.

3-0 to the Villa with Terry, Adomah and Davis getting the goals.

An away win is required after dropping two points in Bordesley Green. This will also help exorcise memories of that game when RDM was in charge.

Would like to see two up for this game, give Hogan a start alongside Davis if Kodjia is out for a couple of games.

Think Taylor is available again, think Hutton deserves to retain the shirt.

Please pick an attacking bench also - Samba, De Laet, Jedinak, Taylor or Hutton & Bjarnasson is the bench of a bottler - 3 proper attackers please

They are only two points behind Villa, goals for/against 19/14 while Villa's are 19/13, so likely to be a tight game.

They might not have won since 5 games ago, but with Bruce's style of play away from B6, I'm expecting a draw might be the best we will achieve.

Just up the road and would normally jump at the chance to attend - went last season and have bad memories of the performance on the day.
Cant motivate myself to go and watch this current team under such a dire manager  - to those making the trip I wish you well and hope you see a convincing win, but my head says another 0-0

They're at sixes and sevens at the back with injuries.

I imagine we will go with the same back 5, and then Jedinak and Whelan with Snodgrass, Hourihane and Adomah and Davis up top.

Preston have numerous injuries and a small squad. They've conceded 11 goals in 5 games and on a really poor run after a great start to the season. Their central defenders are make shift, the only real thing that we'll have to fear from Preston is they work bloody hard and press. We really couldn't have chosen a better time to play them.

Nothing less than 3 points will be acceptable.

0-2 Villa

If SB has done any homework he will know their injury list and pick a team to run at them - but we are all fearful that he has already said "They have had longer to prepare than us" means it will be the usual boredom of sit back and hope to nick a goal

The U23's whacked Newcastle last night with O'Hare getting a hat trick and Lansbury starring and scoring

Come on Brucey freshen it up and give them a chance

Although Hutton has done ok he still leaves huge space when he attempts to go forward and even the dog shits manager stated this as a weak point they wanted to exploit on Sunday. Play the right players in their right positions so Taylor comes in for me.

Although not a great player Whelan was really in a war on Sunday so in should come Jedinak.

I would drop Snodgrass as I think he is shit and too much of a passenger.

If he intend to play Hogan then at least play him off Davies to give the guy a fighting chance

I wouldn't want Hogan to play if he's going to be asked to track back on the left side of midfield - what an utter waste of time.

Really could do with a win

Quite a few choices to make for first time in a while:

Taylor back?
Jedinak to start?
Who alongside him?
Snodgrass rested?
Hogan or Onomah?
O'Hare or Grealish on the bench?

I think we need a combo of physical strength and going for the jugular. The easy thing to say is that means 442. But that's not always the case.

I'd definitely have at least one of O'Hare and grealish on the bench, replacing Thor and Kodjia in the squad

It is true that they have some issues with their defence at the moment, but I'm not sure how people are coming up with the idea that they are in such a terrible run of form. Last weekend's result was a bad one, but the weekend before they lost at Woves by a smaller margin and with a much better performance than we put up there.
Prior to that - a draw away at Fulham and, during the previous month a good win at Blues, and a 3 goal win over Cardiff. Although, a draw at home to Sunderland was disappointing.
I have seen them live a couple of times and they have a distinct style of play, good team spirit, and attack quickly. I'd expect them to be coming out fighting on the back of 2 straight defeats that've dropped them out of the playoff places, especially against us, as its a 6 pointer in that respect.

Overall, they've dropped a few points in a disappointing fashion recently, but haven't we all? Same as last season - don't underestimate #teamslikepreston

Last season they ran and kicked us off the park. It was embarrassing.

We need to match their commitment and have Davis cause havoc amongst their make shift back four. They're conceding very soft goals of late and injuries should amplify this.

That Pearson in the middle is a niggly fecker but a good midfield player. Same for Daniel Johnson who'll be up for it as will Robinson if he gets a start.

PNE had a fantastic start to the season but defensively they've struggled recently and as others have said will have a very makeshift defence out tomorrow.

Won't be straightforward of course as we're not a team that attempts to play on the front foot for large spells of games. PNE have also scored 8 goals in their last 4 so another test for our defence which is looking rock solid now.

I'll go for a narrow 1-2 win.

Preston have been scoring and conceding a lot. Think they've scored 2 in 5 of their last 7. But also conceded at least 2 several times of late

I think that team line up above looks solid, but very one paced in central midfield. If he does pair Jedinak and Whelan I'd have thought Onomah would play the 10 role

I reckon he could play Elmo right mid and rest Snodgrass

This for me...the results at the weekend gave us the opportunity to make some ground with a win but also meant that a draw wasn't the end of the world - we need to match the pacesetters wins last night tonight so we stay ahead of Derby and Boro as well, so it is a bit of a must win I think.

A formula of home win followed by away draw will be good enough for top 6 I'd imagine. We're on course to average 75 points I think which is usually enough.

Need to step it up for top 2 though.

Station Hotel opposite the train station is a decent boozer from my experience waiting for trains in the past.

Last season when I went up there I just stayed in the pubs they have up Friargate near the UCE. Adelphi, Roper Hall, Old Black bull etc. Bit of a walk to Deepdale from there though.

Just got my tickets, will be in the Preston family stand with my 4 year old. Last season he really enjoyed the match (his first game) even if I didn't! Hopefully this time my little boy comes away wanting to support Villa.

PNE are a solid team, but have injuries. We should be comfortably beating them if we have automatic promotion ambitions.

A big game in this household too but not heading up there til a bit later yet! I need us to win this time or he'll be unbearable, or more unbearable than usual!

Sounds like Preston will be putting out a real makeshift defence tonight. Hopefully we can cash in.

If Bruce sends the team or trying to win I think we will. If he sends us out not to lose we likely will.

I liked how we looked when Jedinak came on against the filth, I'd go:

0-2 or 1-3.

Odonah on the right wing! Are you Steve Bruce? Tactics Dim strikes again.

Whelan out of that line up, Onomah in his place and Snodgrass on the right (even though I think he has been quite poor recently).  Bench would be:

Steer, Hutton, Samba, Whelan, Lansbury, O'Hare, Hogan

Agreed, Tom. Whelan deserves a rest. Onomah in his best position alongside Jedi but with the freedom to get forward. Hourihane's threat is wasted by Bruce when he plays him so deep. Undecided between Hutton and Taylor. Preston work extremely hard, get in your face and press superbly. Even with their dodgy defence we'll need every player to be right up for it and as fighters go, they don't come more determined than Hutton. If Bruce goes with Taylor I really hope he goes out there with a point to prove.

Squad wise we have an embarrassment of riches but tonight we need to show the battling side of our game as we did against Fulham, as well as the talent, not the half asleep, tackle dodging, hoofing we saw against the Rags. It should be a cracking game I just hope Bruce can send the team out to win and come back down the M6 with 3 points.

Would take a scrappy 1-0 win tonight.

Hopefully we go 442 with Davis and Hogan up top.

Exactly, can’t see Bjarnasson as anything other than a defensive midfield option either, not an ounce of creation if it is going wrong, that 11 make it happen or we lose!

I'd have had at least 2 of Grealish Lansbury and O Hare on the bench

2 defenders and 2 forwards ..... he'll be classing samba as an 85th min sub up front to get on end of long ball for equaliser !😜

4-5-1
1 attacking player on the bench
Bjarnason over O'Hare

All against a team missing half a defence. Boring bastard.

I’m sick of that phrase. It’s not cowardly it’s what the manager thinks is right with the resources available. He’s not going to include players who have been out for months and played on Monday is he?

Why would you need 3 defenders, a goalkeeper and a defensive midfielder on the bench? What a fucking fanny.

Maybe his plan is to push Hutton & Elmo forward and running in the first half to get a lead then replace one (or both) in the second depending who tires early?

Anyways I am fine with the starting line up at least, assuming Kodjia is injured.

I don't agree chrisw1 as O hare has not been out for months and could easily play the last 30 mins or so if needed

An infuriating selection of subs !
Title: Re: Preston North End vs Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Gareth on November 01, 2017, 07:07:14 PM
Why not?  Someone who played an hour on Monday is perfectly capable of 15 mins if needed on Wednesday.

He has 7 subs - he has selected 5 options to shore it up & 1 to try and change it positively.
