Title: Small Heath memories
Post by: wittonwarrior on October 24, 2017, 01:49:05 PM
The most memorable one was the Andy gray game, the day after Nancy died and Sid was nicked. The programme contained a letter from a knob who was begging forgiveness for his acts of fb violence and blues with their sid is innocent banner. Happy days

Going to a 'friendly', taken down to the lower tier, across the pitch, down the players tunnel and out of the ground in small groups. Walking around the ground and down Coventry Road where they were waiting for us to be let out.

Every goal we've scored there. Incredible feeling when we score at the Shitehole. My first trip there was in 09 as a 17 year old. Gabby nipping the ball into the net on 85 minutes and you've never seen anything like it.
Collins goal when we drew 1 1 was incredible, massive outpouring of relief when that went in, they were singing about us going down that game. LOL
Last year was a drab affair, our fans weren't at their best, scum fans were loud but just kept singing KRO on loop. But when Gardner headed that ball in it went crackers.
Sty is my favourite away day. Roll on Sunday.

I've changed the title. We're not them and we don't want to sink to their level.

My first visit to the sty and first derby when we won 1-2 in 1980/81, Easter Monday 1983, the battle of Brum at Villa Park later in 1983, 13-0 in 1988, especially as the 6-0 was on my eighteenth birthday and the Easter Sunday Cahill game.

Boxing day 1982, the Enckelman game, the return game at Villa Park later that season, the quarter final under Houllier when they went on to actually win  the cup.

I've been to the Small Heath club shop twice. Once to buy their club video of that game in December 1987 a few weeks later as I was in Australia at the time it was played and once to buy my old man a Small Heath shirt with 'Grandad' on the back for his first Father's Day as a grandad.

Used to love the croc walk from the hole in the wall to the ground.   Although we lost the bh game 3 - 2 in 76 loved the atmosphere we created with over 12, 000 fans there and tickets at 50p a throw for juniors in the tilton

Doubt if I’m alone but I absolutely hate this fixture.

Home or away I feel physically sick until the final whistle. The only exception was when we scored the 5th in the 5-1 thrashing.

In 2006 my mate fainted when Cahill scored, silly fucker jumped up from his seat so quick, blood rushed out of his head and down he went.

My brothers mate put a cheeky £5 on that score line. When the 5th went in there was this group of Villa fans desperate for the final whistle and cheering when we missed getting a 6th.
I think he only won around £70

Same here .When Forsell got one back to make it 4-1 ? I started  getting nervous about an unlikely comeback.

Only in my twenties so favourite memories are doing the doue in 05/6 after the humiliation of the early years when they got promoted and then the late winners at their place. 5-1 was just funny but was then soured by the event after.

Be watching this one in Saigon and will be the first I've missed at the sty since 2005. Come on you Villa boys!

Same. I remember there was an air of nervousness for a few minutes after their goal, we all know what Villa are capable of.

My first SHA game was the 3-0 in '02 as a 15 year old, I was gutted. There were no noses in my year at school but the next day I got so much stick as all the Albion, Wolves and even Walsall fans lined up to have a laugh at us losing to little old Small Heath. Same again for the infamous 03/03/03 game. Easily the most evil atmosphere I've seen, and ever will see, at home or away.

Favourite memories: Kevin Phillips and the sheer relief and emotion at finally doing them over. Gary Cahill. 5-1. Gabby x2 at The Sty.

Last year at their place was probably the tamest derby I've seen either at their place or ours. Their fans were pretty shite until they scored. Ours were shite all game. Worst away end I've been in at The Sty, hopefully our support is better on Sunday.

My first visit there was with my Dad in February 1968.
All I remember was we lost and sat in a nasty stinking old ramshackle stand which seemed ready for demolition. It still hasn't been demolished, I guess it just stinks a lot more with a few hundred noses going in it once a fortnight for the nearly 50 years since.

My first encounter of Blues away was also in 1968, but I'll quickly skip over us losing 4-0.

The next time I saw us there clearly stands in mind - the game in April 1976, when although we also lost - I remember a stonking atmosphere and a huge crowd and us having all the tilton.

I mentioned a few days ago - us winning there in October 1978, which was the first time I saw us win there.  Another game from 1978 (the previous season) when we absolutely battered them and should've scored about 10, but lost when Francis (who had apparently just voiced his discontent at being with the rags) took the only chance they created all game - this was the game when one section of our supporters started singing "Francis wants a transfer, Francis wants a transfer La La La, La La La" - anybody on the tilton that day will remember the reply that game from another section of our fans - still makes laugh almost 40 years on!

Allan Evans' tremendous shot into the roof of the net to win there in the championship winning season was also extremely unforgettable.

first derby for me Division 2 Bruno double. Seem to remember Villa fans broke in night before and cut out AVFC in the pitch. Also recall more Villa there than Blues and being let out first? Remember dodging bricks on the Coventry Road and general mayhem. First away game couldn’t understand the hatred got bus back home with Bluenose neighbour glad to be alive! Never understood the hatred or bitterness really. Live  in Dublin now and the noses here are as obsessed.

Not all of them by any means but very few clubs can boast of such a sheer volume of complete and utter guttersnipe, lowlife, Peasant "Supporters" as Birmingham City can - the sad part is they would actually take that as a compliment which says it all really (Which probably tells you what MY memories are of this repulsive fixture)

Possibly the maddest goal ever scored by a central Defender - apart from Chris Nicholls against Everton.

My first visit there was the 0-3  in 2002. We were in a corporate box behind the Villa supporters.  We got kicked out as we were in a box with John Frain's brother. He was goading us when the third went in so my dad chinned him. It was just after my 18th Birthday. We were also in a box on the Railway Stand for the 1-0 Phillips game. Another one where we were told off for celebrating. There was a TV in the box with the game on. The noses in front of us started turning around to look at key decisions so we wound them up by turning it off! I know it dounds childish but it was hilarious winding them up!

We've been in the away end for every match since. Hate his fixture.  Will be glad when we're on the way home on Sunday hopefully with 3 points. Echo the sentiments about being nervous at 4-1 up in the 5-1 game. I had visions of making a Leicester-esque 1994/95 comeback!

I've only been there twice.

The first time was in 1971, for a Youth Cup match.  We had Little and Gidman in our side, they had Francis and I think Gallagher, and maybe Burns.  That game ended 1-1 in front of 21,000.  We won the replay at VP in front of 19,000 on a night of torrential rain.

The second and last time I went there was in 1976, a 2-3 defeat.

My first game down at the tip was the league cup first leg in 1988.

I remember the most intimidating thing about the place was the approach to the Tilton across the barren wasteland that was there before the flats. It looked like some kind of concentration camp.

Other than that, a routine 2-0 win with Andy Gray smashing the ball between the keepers legs from outside the box.

The real fun started in the home leg.

I watched a Villa v Liverpool game (either in the DOL or SGT MkII era) live on SKY with Joe Gallagher at the Solihull Borough football club. We were the only two people in there. An old workmate of mine went to school with his daughter. Apparently she was the hottest girl in school and went on to be a lapdancer. Shame I wasn't watching the game with her.

I used to know Kenny Burns' son when he used to come into the betting shop I used to manage. He had a great nickname amongst his mates.

Born in Small Heath, grew up in Balsall Heath and could see the floodlights from the house, we lived in a maisonette, so if I am honest games at Sty Andrews were from a very early age, one of the first ones that stick in the mind was the Youth cup one mentioned earlier, but have watched the Villa there from every stand they have, including the Kop.
Also some of their maniacs, which go back alot further than the Lulu's, Mc Carthy, Kevin O'Neil, meeting up with the likes of the Greek, Groombridge, Al Stevens , the Northfield Villa and Quinton Villa, I think may have even been before the Steamers days, oh the memories and I still hate the six fingered inbred bastards.

I was at the sty when Gary Thompson got a brace , and didn't think I would ever go to another football match with such an evil atmosphere, until of course the  03/03/03  debacle .
My favourite memory, which I may have posted before, was when the 5th goal went in to cap off the 5-1 massacre.I got a little nervous when Forsell got one back to make it 4-1 ,but my abiding memory of that game is when the 5th goal went in. I was in a sea of Villa fans going absolutely ape shit , I turned round to see my mate making that gesture boxing referees do to indicate the losing boxer has taken to much punishment and the fight is over.

What about, in full flow in a league game, Duncan Fergusons meat and two veg.

If anyone can be bothered to google it and stick it up on here, there's a fantastic picture of Kenny Burns in a forest kit with his left bollock hanging out of his shorts.

Dean Saunders literally 'dropped a goolie'  when he failed to put his shorts on correctly for a Brighton pre season team picture years back.

February 1978 Villa v Blues derby.

“Approximately 150 Birmingham City supporters approached the station and began to chant ’National Front, National Front’ towards 60 Aston Villa supporters, who were coming down the opposite side of the road,” he says.

“Some of the Villa fans were black, and they reacted angrily to the chants. The two groups met up again shortly afterwards in the city centre and running battles took place.”... This goes against the total bollox the comes put  of the Sty.

One thing that always surprises me is that I think we've only played them in the FA Cup twice and wasn't the last time about 1924?  Come on you stattos - help me out!

Every other big local derby, Merseyside, Manchester, North London, Glasgow and Edinburgh etc... sees their arch rivals drawn against each other now and then, and although we've played Wolves and the Baggies in the FA Cup a couple of times, but never played the rags in the 50 years I've been supporting The Villa - mind you is it just as well, just in case because of the unthinkable ???

You are not seriously suggesting that you want their number to come up more.  Be  grateful for small mercies.

Don't worry, they're doing their best to ensure we don't have to play them from next season.

One of us being knocked out in the 3rd round every year lowers the odds on that significantly.

When I was a teenager my best mate was a Blues fan, so we always went to a game every week, alternating between them and the Villa. I don't think that I've been to St. Andrews apart from the odd occasion over the years since the mid '60's when my mate suddenly discovered that his girlfriend was pregnant and "had to" get married rather swiftly and moved away. Maybe it's hard to believe these days, but what I do recall was the piss taking from the regular Blues fans because I was a Villa fan. The difference is that it was always in good humour and I never felt unsafe. It just seemed that we were all football fans who loved football wherever it was played. As others have said, the ground itself was pitiful, especially if it was raining and you were standing on a patch of terracing that was fairly empty, since you could be sure that it was one of several places where the roof had large holes in it.

The difference from then  and now  is that a lot of our bile was spared for Man  United.  We  were never bussom budies with Blues but it was somewhere to go for local fans if you didn't have the money to follow Villa away.

Pretty much how it was for me EIA.  Growing up in Sheldon there were a few Noses there.  I had one particular mate that was a Nose and I used to go a lot with him and you are right, it was perfectly safe.  The word banter has now achieved cliche status; but that's exactly what it was, banter and everyone there was there for the football.

My last visit to the sty was a third round FA Cup tie when they played non-league Wigan in 1978.  I'd got two tickets for their main stand for me and the old man but he wasn't feeling too well so football-hating Mrs S came with me.  My old man died a few days later.

Thanks for that Dave, I have questioned myself from time to time, as to whether it really was like that, or did I have my rose tinted's on? It's reassuring that someone else can recall a similar experience. That being the case, I often wonder how, when and why we wound up hating each other instead of just enjoying the game.

I used to go down there with my Blue nose supporting mates on occasion when I couldn't make Villa away games. We're talking early 80s here. Primarily for the beer in the pub afterwards than the football on offer. But must admit, it was very much an 'undercover' operation as by the early 80s they most definitely hated us then.

I think it was in the late 70s it changed, by the time of their Apex mob, though it may have been slightly earlier.

Somebody on here once pointed out that in the 1975-76 season away game we had most (all?) of the Tilton and the Railway end was pretty mixed with no trouble during the game.

I recall a big mob of Blues coming down Trinity Rd towards the Holte after the March 1979 game - i think all the Villa had gone down Witton Lane towards the away end. That was the first time I saw them organised in a big mob at Villa Park

Similar to what Pat M says above I remember that 1979 game it was pouring down and afterwards they appeared at the top of the Aston Hall park slope and charged down towards the Holte.

I remember it kicking off, half way up the Holte, on the right hand side, in the pre season friendly in August ‘71. I cant remember how many Small Heath there were.

Can’t remember any of that it was the day of Dave Callaghan’s wedding so probably got off handy. Did we do the double over them that season?

Yes, 1-0 in both. Andy Gray at theirs and Sid at home. That was after a run of 5 defeats to them I think
