Start of another U18 Academy season tomorrow at Bodymore.  We have presumably a very difficult first game against Chelsea.
It is always interesting to see the new crop of players as almost all of last seasons regular team will be too old to play.
From last years Team Mitch Clark and Jake Hayes have taken great strides towards making the first team squad and I would think Jack Clarke could also do well this year.
I am expecting Jake Walker and Dominic Revan to do well for the U18s this year. They both played quite often last year and have another two years in the 18s by my reckoning.
I am looking forward to the new season very much at this level.

I was told on Saturday that that the U23's are playing at Bescot tonight but there is no mention on the OS. Does anyone know anything about this?

U23 Team for tonight vs the stripeys.

Matija Sarkic
Mitchell Clark, Easah Suliman, KevinToner, Oscar Borg
Jordan Lyden (c), Jake Doyle-Hayes, Corey Blackett-Taylor, Callum O'Hare
Harry McKirdy, Keinan Davis

Subs;
Viktor Johannson
Jack Clarke, Jacob Bedeau, Khalid Abdo, Jordan Cox

An obvious omission is RHM.

So don't think any of this team will feature tomorrow vs Reading

Just before the half hour Villa take the lead through a penalty from Lyden.

The passing of decades and centuries do not matter as any Albion team of any era are always dirty bastards!

Then Sarkic saved a penalty to keep Villa ahead.
Third goal scored by Doyle-Hayes in added injury time.

Any team can enter, there is a qualifying round for those below the top two levels to get the number down to 32 for the group stage.

U23s lost 1-2 to 10 man Stoke U23 at BMH today. Kickoff 12 noon

Team:-

Matija Sarkic
Easah Suliman, Kevin Toner, Jacob Bedeau, Oscar Borg
Jordan Lyden, Alex Prosser, Jack Clarke, Khalid Abdo
Kelsey Mooney, Jordan Cox

Subs;

Viktor Johansson
Harvey Knibbs, Joshua Williams, Jake Walker, Dominic Reven

Stoke 1-0 up at half time, with one of theirs sent off in injury time. Then went 2-0 up through a penalty before Abdo got the consolation.

From memory notable absentees in today's line up:
Davis, RHM, Callum O'Hare, Harry McKirdy and Jake Doyle-Hayes. Plus Mitchell Clark.
Can we presume some of them will be in tomorrow's line-up vs Wigan?

I'm looking forward to watching Cam soon.
Early days this season but I think the second years are maybe not as good as the first years so it may be a tough season at U18 level.
Only seen the home game against Chelsea so far, and they dominate youth football, but we seem pretty good defensively with not a lot of threat going forward, so I can see a route into the youth team for Cam if he is as good as his record suggests.

We lost our first home game of the season to Chelsea at Bodymore a couple of weeks ago.  This is no surprise and it makes judging our lads very difficult against a Team who had about 85% possession and where the game was played almost exclusively in our half.

But we held out very well and there were some outstanding performances from some of our lads.
Boucher is a very good Keeper and looks the part.
The two centre backs who are both first years (so only 16 years old) were outstanding. Ethan Patterson and Dominic Revan won everything that came their way and there was a lot of crosses etc to deal with.  Revan played regularly at the end of last season as an U16 and looks to have a very bright future.
Best forward on view for us was Jacob Ramsey, very skillful indeed.

A couple of questions - Can the public watch the games at BMH? I ask because I have read elsewhere that the public are not allowed to watch U23 games there.

Is there a website/webpage showing fixtures?
Title: Re: Reserves, Academy and Ladies 2017-18
Post by: Larry Duff on August 25, 2017, 08:22:36 AM
You used to be able to watch the games without a problem but now you have to be on a list.  It is fairly easy to get on the list but it does mean a visit to Villa Park and showing proof of your address etc.
They only check the list if the games are being played at the back and you need to go through the security gates.
Last week against Chelsea the game was played right by the Car Park so anyone could get in to see it.
The fixtures should be on the website but most U23 games are held at Villa Park or Bescott and entrance is free to season ticket holders or a couple of quid if you haven't got a season ticket.

1-0 (Cox, 13)

Villa take the lead and it’s a lovely goal to break the deadlock.

It all started with Doyle-Hayes who exchanged passes with O’Hare.

Cox then charged forward and let rip from outside the box, superbly curling into the bottom corner past McCarthy.

I assume He meant Neil Cox but I might be wrong.

Wow what a great performance and that is why I like to watch the Youth and Reserve Teams play.
Kodjia did fine and looked fit enough. He played the first half so hopefully will be fit enough to play tomorrow night. I reckon He will be on the bench.  I thought Ritchie De Laet played very well too and should be in contention to play tomorrow.  In fact He should start but as He played about 80 minutes I would guess He won't.

This Team played Football in the second half that you would never see the first Team playing.  Quick, Skillful, Accurate, Interchanging positions, pressing and winning the ball back.
Every player played well tonight against a strong Southampton including Virgil Van Dijk in their ranks but Mitchel Clark, Jack Clarke, Jordan Cox, Jake Doyle Hayes and the best player on the pitch Callum O'Hare were all outstanding.
After Saturday it was a joy to watch.

Hi Larry.

What position did Mitch Clark play?
Title: Re: Reserves, Academy and Ladies 2017-18
Post by: Larry Duff on September 13, 2017, 06:37:31 PM
He played Left sided Centre Back with Sulliman his partner on the right and Oscar Borg at Left Back.
Mitch is a Centre Half by trade but they often move him to play at right back.
I've seen him play many times and only once at Left Back and that was his First Team debut.
Luckily it didn't seem to bother him and He played very well.

I like Taylor but he always looks slightly uncomfortable on the left from what I've seen.

I agree on Suliman, he reads the game really well for his age, he makes mistakes but that's to be expected.

Lyden and Sarkic look too good for this level.

I am really hopeful about this current crop of young players.  Things look pretty good when you think that we could field a genuine U23 (ie they are all under that age) team of:

Bree    Beddeau     Suliman   Clark

        Lyden            Doyle-Hayes

Green           O'Hare               Grealish

                     Davis

I just hope there is a plan in place to bring these players through, as it looks a really good group.

I have seen Cam play a couple of times now for the Youth Team and He is doing very well.  Be interesting if He starts tonight as the FA Youth Cup is the Blue Ribbon tournament for U 18s and every Club fields it's strongest Side.

Coventry reckon they will have 500 fans at the game tonight but as Villa hadn't as of this morning even mentioned the game or put it on the fixture list, unfortunately the first competitive home game for a lot of our youngsters is likely to be in front of a Hostile crowd.

Both goals from Odutayo who's one of the kids we picked up in the summer (Dutch lad who was playing in Belgium).  Larry might be able to tell us more but I've been told that they're very impressed with him so far.  Watching the game he looks like he has great technique, his first touch os solid and the strikes the ball really well, if he can keep that a develop he could be a very good striker.

We played quite well and the 500 Coventry fans turned out to number about 20.
I had not seen Odutayo play before but He has a lot of ability and took his goals very well and is another U17 player so will be available next year.

We seem to be building up a good collection of first year YTS with home grown talent like Jake Walker, Dominic Revan, Lewis Brunt and Jacob Ramsey and adding to them Odutayo and the impressively named Indiana Vassilev who was the youngest player in the USA U17 World Cup squad.

That's the problem with the Youth games, they are so boring !!  Wow that sounded like a cracker.
Not all games are classics but the coaches always insist on passing Football so even if we go behind (and the opposition as well) we will never resort to long ball.
I haven't managed to see the youth team for the last couple of months as I have a dodgy hip and hopefully I am due an operation tomorrow but I hope to get down there before the end of the season.
Be interesting to see Cameron next year when He will be a YTS.

Correct decision as I wasn't really fit to have it.

Looking forward to watching tonight's game. Tishbola is starting and another chance to see some of the very good talent we have including the seemingly forgotten Mitch Clark.

0-2 mckirdy penalty.

Great ball out to Green again and his first touch was too good for the right back who lunged in, clear pen.

McKirdy then missed a 1on1.  We're battering them to be honest.

Tish has ability but he's far too laid back and doesn't have enough quality to make up for it.  I can imagine him having a good run where everything works but I don't think it'll ever b an extended period of being worth what we paid unless his attitude changes.

On the subject of midfielders, Jack Clarke looks very good, works hard and has a good range of passing, he could turn out to be a good player.

Bree worries me as well, gives the ball away a lot.

Bedeau and Suliman both have mistakes in them but they're decent in the air, read the game pretty well and seem to have good instincts, I think they could both turn out well.

O'Hare looks unsure of himself on the right, he's definitely a 10 for me.

I thought Tshibola did ok apart from the error for their goal.

He could be a much better player though.  There were a few times where his touch was really heavy because he was a little lazy getting to the pass or he was a bit sloppy with his pass.  even their goal was him dithering on the ball a bit, it's the same reason I don't like Lansbury, they just look .like they do a couple of good things and think "that's enough for now" and take it easy for a couple of minutes.

It was a good performance though and I think we were well worth the 4 goals, McKirdy worked his arse off and was always involved, Green looked very good but tired badly (which is understandable).

Coaching suggests it’s something physical we can improve. It’s more in his head and the fact that he doesn’t give enough of a fuck.

He had an opportunity to take make the most of his potential. Compare and contrast to Dele Alli. You could say he was better than Tshibola at Mk Dons but what is absolute certain is that he grabbed his opportunity at Spurs and became the brilliant player he is today. It’s about attitude and desire and Tshibola just doesn’t have enough of it. File with Ireland, Stephen.

Total number of full size 4G pitches, type  size and number of indoor pitches , facilities surrounding main training  pitch ( look at the Saint’s and you will see covered seating etc for spectators which doesn’t exist at BMH) facilities for families of academy youth players ( same it doesn’t sound a lot but when you drop your seven year old off to play in a tournament
funnily enough how you are treated to basics such as waiting/ refreshment / viewing areas is a reflection on our club and ours is poor ) Yes we’re better than Stoke but pop up to Derby and their whole set up is first class from layout, types of pitch, acreage of site and family / player facilities and how welcoming they are. I’ve got chance to go and see Man City’s set up soon and from what I have seen on social media / media I think I’ll be coming home with an even lower opinion of our training base.
In honesty It’s a bit like the rest of the club including Villa Park in that it is good but slipping backwards down the pecking order. Doug purchased BMH in the 70’s and whilst Randy gave it a boost that’s akin to you putting an extension on an unsuitable house instead of rebuilding from scratch . Just my opinion but that’s what I see.

Thanks for the reply, I did some work for Derby a few years ago and they were in the process of building theirs so it’s brand new. I’m not sure that comparing anything we do with Man City is going to help, they are miles away from us.

Seems like we may very well be slipping behind the very best or the very newest but isn’t that natural given our current position.

Unfortunately Cam might be out for the rest of the season. He hurt his ankle during PE at school a couple of weeks ago so they sent him to the Manor Hospital for an x-ray where they diagnosed mild ligament damage and sent him home with no strapping or support. The next day at BMH, they sent him straight to the first team doctor who arranged for an immediate scan at Little Aston where they found three stress fractures in his foot, a fracture in his ankle and severe ligament damage. He is now on crutches with his foot in a surgical boot. He is due to see a consultant this afternoon for a review. They are not too fussed about the stress fractures as they will heal naturally, it is more the damage to his ligaments.

The U23s beat Ipswich last night 3-0 in the Premier League Cup. Not a bad week for the young lions, 2 convincing wins, scored 9 and conceded 1. Here is the link to the club's OS match report and team.

Freezing night, but the U23s did it again, 2-0.  First goal by Mooney after 45 seconds from a great through ball.  Thought Blackburn were better on the night, strong side, but O'Hare's low shot at the edge of the box sealed it for the good guys.

Good man Rushian. I'm willing him to do well for us more than any player since Luke Moore. Hopefully things turn out better this time. I'd settle for him scoring a hat-trick against Middlesbrough which Luke managed, in the play-off (which Luke had no reason to manage).

RHM has 9 in 8 for the u23s now, not much more him or O'Hare can do to earn a place in the senior squad.

Just got back from watching our U12, U13, U14 teams play at the Bournemouth Academy. Many of the Villa players played up a year. We won 2 and lost one. I spoke to a number of the parents who had travelled down and they were very positive about our academy. One chap lives in Northampton and has to take his son three times a week to Bodymore Heath. This half term, he has travelled to Cardiff, Bournemouth and Everton with his son to watch the games. That's a dedicated parent!

I coach an U14 and U16 team and get to watch quite a lot of local academy football, mainly at Yeovil. I was particularly keen to see our U14's who won 5-0.  Interestingly they, like the other two age groups, played 343. Playing out from the back, through the thirds, keeping possession, etc, etc. It was great to watch.  Hopefully some day our first team will have a manager who plays the same way.

Living down South I don't get the chance to see our Youth Teams play, but I would certainty recommended it to any Villa fan.

The RHM volley on about 1:25 is lovely, brilliant technique.

In the game the first is the sort of poachers effort that we just don't seem to score many of.  For the second it's hard to tell if it's good movement or terrible defending but he took the chance well.

Aside from that I'd forgotten all about Lyden but he's another youngster that I'd like to see more of, from what I've seen he's got a good engine and picks up a decent number of goals so he could probably do most of the job that Hourihane is doing and hopefully add a bit of energy.

finished 0-1 so that's 8 wins on the bounce and the title is still possible, we're 4 behind with a game in hand, the problem is there's only 1 game left for blackburn so they just have to win that.

The game in hand is against a very poor Newcastle team and 2nd (and therefore playoffs) is guaranteed after tonight.  When you consider most of our regulars are 18-20 and this is a U23 competition we should be very proud of the kids.

Edited, didn't know there were playoffs, that's a bit shit in a 12 team league like this.

Just got back from  Ewood Park Another win, that is 8 on the trot now. Villa really had to work for this win. It was like the Alamo at times but these Villa boys don't know when they are beat .Even the ref and linesman giving them every decision and playing nearly 7 added minutes could'nt stop us. I think we had to take RHM off before he got sent off as he came in for some rough treatment from their central defenders . Lyden took his goal well, good to see him fit and playing again

Looking at the team list this is a younger side than normal with 3-4 regulars getting a rest, much like the last game, which is sensible given it's a dead game and we have the cup semi on Friday.

Odutayo on the bench, hope he gets on because I've heard a lot of good things about him.

After 10 minutes of watching I agree, especially the back 4 who are bullying Mooney a bit.  To be more specific this defence looks like a group that haven't played together much, Suliman is doing pretty well though, he reads the game very well for someone at this level and he's very composed.  I stand by my belief that he's going to be a very good defender for us in a few years.

Leicester City 2 Aston Villa 3 RECAP: Hepburn-Murphy sends Villa U23s through to the PL Cup final

Alex Dicken reports from the King Power as AVFC bid to reach the Premier League Cup final

A stunning performance from Aston Villa’s second string saw them remain on course for a wonderful promotion and cup double.

Their Premier League 2 play-off clash against Reading was firmly on the backburner this evening though as Jack Clarke and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy fired them to a stunning win over Leicester City at the King Power.

Clarke gave Villa the lead after 75 minutes before 31-year-old Yohan Benalouane - gaining minutes for the Foxes’ U23s - slammed home a header five minutes later.

Leicester thought they had a penalty when Villa ‘keeper Matija Sarkic brought down substitute Admiral Muskwe at the death but referee Joe Hull bizarrely reversed his decision and awarded a free-kick to the hosts.

That came to nothing and Villa made Leicester pay early in extra-time as Isaiah Bazeley-Graham swept a beautiful pass through for Hepburn-Murphy to round Daniel Iversen and tap home.

The striker wasn’t done and looked to have wrapped up a place in the Premier League Cup final with a stunning second. But George Thomas had other ideas and pulled a late goal back for Leicester.

The Foxes couldn’t deny Villa a place in the final, though, and Kevin MacDonald’s side will meet either Swansea City or Sheffield United.

I've finally seen a Villa goal. RHM walked through the whole of the Reading defence and scored the winner in the 93rd minute.

If RHM isn't involved in the play-offs it's a disgrace, ignoring someone in this form is ridiculous.

Absolutely, 2 goals and an assist as a halftime sub and could easily have had a couple more, brilliant performance from him. If anyone isn't sure about him I recommend watching that second half.

I'd love to see him play right of a 3 with Kodjia and Grabban (and Jack in behind), we'd terrify any team in the championship with the skill and pace they'd bring.

I was wondering if we’d see him against Millwall. Though it would mean missing the play off final.

I’d be happy to cash in on hogan and promote RHM - if we could get a big enough fee.

Hard to see how RHM will be involved in the play offs at the moment. There are three strikers ahead of him

What a great game.  Some of the best games I ever see at Villa Park are the Youth and Reserve games.  Nearly always good football played, free to get in for Season Ticket holders or a couple of quid if you haven't got one, you can park right outside and we win more than we lose.
I would recommend it.

RHM is on fire at the moment.  Sometimes after games I think to myself that He didn't play very well and then I think "but He did score two goals"  I thought Prosser, Jack Clark and Doyle Hayes did very well in midfield tonight and as a proud Brummie it was nice to see five of the front six that finished were local lads.

I’ve watched a bit of this and the second half of the game during the week

JDH the pick today for me

RHM was great in the week but quite poor today. Save for a couple of very nice runs that set up brilliant chances for others

Can’t say I thought O’Hare has been great in either game

Green looks very rusty. Doubt he’ll be able to contribute in the play offs

The right winger has very quick feet and lovely skils - possibly an erratic pass though

I agree on Bazeley-Graham, he's looked solid every time I've seen them but he's been excellent tonight.  I think Clarke and Doyle-Hayes have bossed things in midfield as well.

RHM should've done better at the end but I think the Cox chance a few minutes before was the big one, foot through it into the bottom left (as we were attacking) and the keeper would've been totally off balance trying to get back across.

Swansea seem to have more pace and be a bit bigger but our players have much better technique.  Their 6 has been all over RHM, pulling and pushing him all game.  The comedy dive by their 7 was ridiculous.

Yeah it’s like a basketball game

The fact we’ve not really been able to pick the final ball or capitalise, given that openness, suggests to me that Bruce may have been right not to throw the kids in more. But some of these kids really should be on loan. It would force them to be better decision makers and to be be more ruthless

Don't forget that a lot of these players played on Tuesday, the lack of sharpness is more likely a fitness thing than anything else, they certainly looked a lot less wasteful in the area the last few months.

Glad all the lads that have played a part in the cup throughout the season, had a chance to see it through.
As much as I want O'Hare, RHM, Clark etc to involved in the 1st team more, I'm happy they've lifted a cup tonight instead of being in the squad for the last 1st team game at Millwall.
The club could of chosen to use a few youngsters for the Millwall game, in which case they would of been rested tonight.

Well done to the babbies, they've been playing liquid football in recent weeks, last night they had to grind it out away to a team playing at a higher level which they'll learn a lot from. The taste of success should keep them hungry too.
Was it not on avtv?

From PRAVDA

Find below an explanation of the Villa v Brighton U23 Play-Off Final date, which is set to take place on the same day as our first team Play-Off away leg at Middlesbrough.

The scheduling of the match was determined by the Premier League.

Aston Villa submitted a request for the final to take place outside the designated dates of the 4th to 7th May due to our U23s participating on the Premier League Cup Final on 4th May.

Unfortunately, Brighton have a Sussex Senior Cup Final against Crawley Town on Wednesday 9th May, which we were advised could not be rescheduled thus preventing the fixture from taking place this week.

Competition rules state that the final must be played at the home venue of the highest-placed Play-Off finisher.

With our second-leg Championship play-off tie against Middlesbrough taking place on Tuesday 15th May, the fixture couldn’t take place beyond Saturday to allow sufficient time for the pitch at Villa Park to be prepared properly for the first-team.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

The club is currently working on broadcasting the game live on our media channels for supporters who are unable to attend due to travelling to Middlesbrough for the Play-Off first leg.

Sussex Senior Cup?! We should bring back that Brum competition that Date Cooper misses, just to give us more bargaining power.

I went to the final of the Birmingham Senior Cup last night. Stourbridge beat Hednesford 2-1 after extra time, but I didn't see them win it because I fucked off back to the pub on 90 minutes.

Its on YouTube too

Bit disappointing so far. JDH passes well. RHM, green and O’Hare have done a couple of things each. The sub who came on looks a bit of a cart horse. No way would you put the keeper or any of the defenders anywhere near the first team for a while

I keep reading how O’Hare is sensational and has to be in the first team

I’ve watched three U23 games of late. He hasn’t been anywhere near first team ready. A dip in form?

Yep, he's not the same player as he was a few months back.  Nothing seems to be going for him right now.

Hopefully just a blip

But it also reminds me just how sensational Jack Grealish was at 19 when he came through

Theee kids have to be on loan next year. The gap from under 23 to first team is too much

Disappointing end to the season for the U23 against Brighton sadly Not much between the teams but i felt Brighton got all the breaks.Lyden having to go off,RHM being judged offside  after scoring and just not getting the run of the ball .Still it has been a good season Well done Villa

The young Villans stormed to the top of their group with three victories from three on the first day.

Though they lost to Leicester City in the Main Cup quarter final earlier today, they dropped into contention for the Main Shield - which they won.

Villa saw off Kashima Antlers in the Main Shield semi-final by a score of 3-0 before narrowly edging out West Ham United in the final, 2-1.

The success out in Hong Kong has capped a memorable season for the claret and blue young guns.

They clinched the Premier League Cup, reached the play-off final and now have another gong to add to the ever-growing list.

Yes. He was (and is) that good. I first brought him on as a sub in a 'B' team game for 10-11 year olds. Everyone did the 'Oh, how cute' bit. About 30 seconds later after he had taken the ball round most of their players and unleashed a fierce shot which cannoned back off the inside of the post you could have heard a pin drop.
