UGO, UGO, UGO!!!!
-
Get well soon, Ugo. One of my favourite defenders while I've been watching.
-
Horrible news. So young too. Hoping he makes a recovery to full fitness.
-
Shocking and unexpected. So fit and strong, brave and intelligent when he played for us and his career is going so well. Hope this is a minor glitch and he goes on with a wonderful career to really make a mark. He deserves so, 110% man through and through.
-
Get well soon Ugo.
-
Sorry to learn of this news.
-
Awful news, get well soon Ugo.
-
Get well soon Ugo

Unexpected news. Hope he's ok. Get well soon Ugo.
-
Get well soon big fella. Loved him in our shirt.
-
get well soon. Ugo
-
Get well soon, Ugo. One of my favourite defenders while I've been watching.
Same for me. We had some fantastic teams in the mid 90s. Hopefully we won't lose another one so soon after Dalian and he can pull through and make a good recovery.
-
Get well soon big man. Loved him at the heart of our defence, my first car was named after him by my girlfriend at the time.
-
Fucking hell. Best wishes to him for a full recovery, loved him as a player.
-
Get well soon, Ugo.
-
Fucking hell. Best wishes to him for a full recovery, loved him as a player.
ditto
-
All the best Ugo. I wish you a speedy recovery.
-
All the best Ugo.
-
Best wishes for a speedy recovery. 2 memories from the back of my mind. His shirt was the largest made by the kit manufacturer. I'm sure that I can recall him being either the 1st black England player or the 1st black England captain when playing for the U23's. This was before Viv Anderson for the full team. Does anyone have any info on this?
-
Get well soon Ugo.
Viv Anderson played for England about 15 years beforehand didn't he?
-
Viv Anderson was the first black player to win a full cap for England, that was back in the late 70s.
-
You are right PeterWithe, Anderson 1978, Ugo 1992. I don't know what my memory is about then.
-
He's passed away according to Jason Cundy. RIP big man, loved watching you as a lad. I remember as a kid one of our neighbours knew him through doing his electrical work on his house. The bloke told him I was a massive Villa fan and he sent me a signed photo and shirt. Ugo, Ugo!
-
Oh hell.
RIP.
-
Spurs have just tweeted that he has died. RIP Big man.
-
Oh god how awful
-
Oh bloody hell.
-
Very sad news indeed, great player in his day.
Only 44, it's ridiculous!!
-
It's being reported that the Big Man has so sadly passed away,
at far too young an age .
Loved watching him play for us.........Condolences to his Family, RIP Ugo........Godzvilla!
-
Absolutely tragic news about Ugo's passing. I'm absolutely stunned tbh.
RIP big man. :(
-
Of fuck.... I really don't know what to say. Like losing someone in the family can't believe it.
-
RIP and God bless big man.😥
-
Shit.
-
Its shocking. Really really shocking! RIP Ugo.
-
That's absolutely awful. Words fail me. RIP big man.
-
Stunned by this.
Good memories of his days with us.
RIP Ugo.
-
Tragic news, great player for us, heard him interviewed a few times, seemed like a really decent man. Thoughts go out to his friends and family.

Simply gutted, part of one of season ur terrific teams. Cheers condolences to football and personal family

Shocked! So young! R.I.P Ugo.

Just the saddest news. Best wishes to his family and friends. RIP big man.
-
Shocking, shocking news. Really saddened by this.
-
rest in peace ugo you definately earned it
-
Really shocking news. He was only 44. This is so sad.
-
So sad to hear this news...RIP
-
Sad news.
-
One of my first Villa Heroes!
Great player for us and I remember him blocking absolutely everything in my first ever trip to VP.
RIP big man, condolences and best wishes to family and friends.
-
Just heard the news on the BBC. Very sad and shocking, and thoughts go out to his friends and family. He was a fine player for us and having met him a couple of times, a nice bloke to boot.
-
Terrible news, him and Dalian gone now.
-
Wow, that is desperately sad!
-
Gutted. RIP Ugo. Thanks for the memories
-
Awful news, thoughts are with his family RIP
-
Shit. First Dalian then Ugo. Bloody hell.
-
I loved watching him play.
Also, I remember a very articulate interviewee, whenever I heard him on the radio.
Mostly, he just came across as a very nice, talented man. RIP, Ugo.
-
This is incredibly sad. Loved Ugo as a player. A giant. Hard as nails. And graceful in an odd way.
Rest in peace, Ugo.
-
Devastating news. RIP Ugo.
-
Gutted, absolutely gutted. He was my favourite player for a good few years when football was all that mattered to me. I will hold some great memories of him. Totally gutted and desperately sad.
-
met him once in a Birmingham nightclub and he was genuinely friendly. We were both at the bar and when i mentioned that I was a Villa fan he pulled out a flute and poured some of the champagne that he'd bought and gave it to me. Was more than happy chatting away and you could tell he was, well, genuine. Terrible loss for his family and friends. I said Dalian and Ugo but also Sir Graham. 3 top people as well as Villamen.
-
Gutting heartbreaking news RIP Ugo, thank you for the memories thoughts and prayers with all your Family
-
Devastated. He was a colossus for us. Cannot believe he's gone at only 44. RIP big man.
-
Saw one of his first games at VP against Norwich, we lost 3-2 and he was like Bambi on ice, don't think I ever saw the great man put a foot wrong ever again. R.I.P
-
Absolutely gutted, heard this morning he had collapsed but wasn't expecting this.
RIP Big Man Ugo, you were a great player and Villain first and foremost. Very upsetting news.
-
Just awful news. I'm so sad to hear this. That's no age at all. God speed, Ugo and thank you.
-
Words fail me - how these guys are so fit yet they can die like this
RIP very fond memories of your time with us and winning trophies
-
Horrible news. No age to go, just awful.
-
I had seen Ugo play in the reserves and when the man next to me stormed off in disgust on his 1st team debut I told him to watch out for him in future and he proved me right. I was lucky to meet him when we travelled in Europe and he was a lovely man. He wouldn't even diss Shearer for that awful tackle/assault.
RIP big man. Holte Ender in the Sky.
-
Absolutely rotten news. RIP Ugo, and thank you for every glorious memory.
-
One of my first memories down the villa, warrior :(
RIP, heits
-
RIP Ugo.
-
Shite news is that.
RIP Big Man.
-
Lost for words. He was part of the Villa side that got me into the Villa. Great defender and partnership with Southgate. Was gutted when he left. What a terrible year to be a Villan. RIP big man. I will always remember you lining up the first time i saw the Villa live.
-
Very very sad. Another fantastic player from our mid 90s teams gone.
Sad period for the club....on field decline, little happened this season and lost Dalian Atkinson start of the season, Sir Graham in the middle and now Ugo at the end.
-
Desperately sad news, one of an elite bunch of players who have played over 300 games for us.
RIP big man and thanks for the memories.
-
Awful news. What a titanic defender he was. Certainly should have been recognised more at international level. All great teams are built on a strong defence and the sides he was in at Villa were great teams.
What kind of age is 44 to pass away? RIP Big Man, you were fantastic.
-
Terrible news, condolences to his family.

How many England caps did he get while playing for us?
I always remember that was the main reason he wanted to leave us and then we all scratched our heads when he ended up at Boro. In fairness he did play a few games for England when up there. He scored at the Holte End for England v Spain shortly after leaving us.
-
Awful news, RIP Ugo. So sad and so soon after Dalian....
-
I am saddened to hear the news of Ugo's death.
-
Very sad news - good player and more importantly a really nice bloke. Remember speaking to him in Ronnie Scott's on Broad Street after the last match of the season where we just about stayed up (BL's first season). I was worse for wear and just kept thanking him for helping us stay up.
-
A sad sad day...RIP Ugo.
-
Just heard the news. Absolutely gutted. Nothing but respect for the great man. RIP Ugo.
-

My daughter rang this morning and told me of the time she was in a nightclub in Brum when Ugo came in. Word soon got round that he was there and she said the whole place erupted with the chants of: Ugo, Ugo, Ugo. Maybe it was the same night Peter. She also said he was a huge unit.
From a woman's perspective, Mrs S said he had kind eyes.
-
RIP UGO. Excellent player for us.
Do I remember an H&V cover with Ugo on? Something along the lines 'just when you thought it was safe here comes Ugo' (in reference to him replacing Teale or McGrath).
I'm sure I didn't imagine it - can someone post it (if I'm not going mad)
-
A spontaneous chant of "Ugo!" for 60 seconds in the 5th/16th minute?
-
Four England caps. Four.
-
Sad News. RIP Ugo.

-
Very sad.
I seem to recall we pinched him from the Baggies because they wouldn't pay for his bed and breakfast. At least that's how I recall it.
UGO UGO UGO!
-
A spontaneous chant of "Ugo!" for 60 seconds in the 5th/16th minute?
Both - and after every goal!
-
Awful news. RIP Ugo.
-
Only just seen it, what sad, sad news. A colossus for us and a true gent by all accounts. RIP.
-
First saw Ugo at pre season at Evesham United, he made mistakes, but you could see the talent, a friend at Evesham told me Big Ron had said on the Day he would be an England player soon enough.
RIP Ugo
-
Very sad news. Always came across as a lovely bloke.
-
An abiding memory of Ugo was something that was mentioned in Claret and Blue (I think) around the time we had that ace Reebok kit with the V-neck, which was that his upper body was so big they had to make him an XXL shirt which narrowed towards the waist, otherwise he would have had too much shirt to tuck into his shorts.
-
I'm 6'1" and often players who look big on the field are surprisingly small in 'real' life. I once stood next to Ugo on New St and he towered above me. Genuinely huge. And a top player. It was so disappointing when he went to boro.
-
Truly tragic that a seemingly fit 44 year old man can die following a cardiac arrest. RIP Ugo, a fine player.
-
Shocking news. Yesterday's news was bad enough but I just it for granted he'd pull through.
Loved him as a player. Condolences to his family.
-
RIP Ugo, shocking news great, memories of his Villa days, a rock!
-
I think it's a sad fact that the chances of surviving a cardiac arrest are virtually non-existent. I used to work in cardiac rehabilitation and thought it was interchangeable with a heart attack to start off with. But the former is electrics and the latter is plumbing, as the nurses used to say. One ward I was working on, I was sat at the desk when this guy walked past me to go to the loo. We said hi, he walked into the bathroom and dropped down dead. The worst bit was that his wife was visiting him at the time.
-
Bumped into him at the Cheltenham Festival in 2012.
Not sure I've been on the receiving end of a firmer hand shake in all my life.
Uuuuuugo!
Uuuuuugo!
Uuuuuugo!
-
very sad news RIP Ugo my thoughts are with his family
-
Awful, awful news. What a desperately sad season this has been.
Had a shocking debut but matured into a really terrific defender. His partnership with Southgate was up there alongside McGrath/ Teale and Evans/McNaught Imo.
RIP big man.
-

Excellent - thanks!
-
Shocked.
RIP big man
-
I remember talking to Ugo outside the Trinity the week before the Norwich game when we could have got relegated under Brian Little. I said to him 'please don't let us down'. In a softly spoken reply, he made it very clear that Villa would not be going down! I was at the Norwich game and although the fate of relegation hung over us, I felt particularly calm. I can really understand why he was so highly thought of as a coach of young players. Lets hope we can give him a proper send off on Sunday. RIP
-
Rest in peace, Ugo. You will never be forgotten at Villa.
-
Extremely sad and very shocking. RIP Ehiogu and condolences to your family.
-
Part of the last successful Villa team and a player who always seemed to have made it through his own efforts rather than by virtue of natural talent. I wonder if there was ever a better three man central defence than McGrath-Southgate-Ugo?
There was a story in the programme or another official publication that some rugby internationals were at a match one afternoon. Afterwards they were a bit dismissive of the physique of the players - until Ugo walked by.
-
From a woman's perspective, Mrs S said he had kind eyes.
I know what she is saying Dave but many a forwards would totally disagree with that.
-
Thanks for the many happy memories Ugo.
-
One of my favourites. Ugo UGO UGO
-
Dalian, Graham and Ugo all within a year, very shocking. Still surprises me with all the tech, sports science, fitness and nutrition how many players or ex players are passing away from heart attacks. I might be wrong but I just can't remember it happening as often going back 20 years or so ago.
RIP Ugo.
-
RIP Big Ugo. So so sad to hear this awful news. To echo Paul Merson, only the good die young.
-
What dreadful news. One of my favourite Villa players of the last 30 or so years, an absolute rock in defence and more importantly a thoroughly decent person, friendly and approachable who always had time for fans.
Rest in peace, Ugo. You won't be forgotten here in the Midlands.
-
Just seen Merse on sky. He's in absolute bits, difficult to watch.
RIP bigman, this year has been so shit
-
That's just such sad news.
I too saw his debut v Norwich, and didn't think we'd see him again, after that, but what a great player he became.
-
I watched Ugo's iffy performance against Norwich from the Holte End and wondered how he'd come back from that. Lesser players and lesser men would have struggled, but not Ugo. He became part of one of the best defences I've seen at Villa Park and was by all accounts a great bloke. Thanks, Ugo, you won't be forgotten.
-
Good lord. same age as me. That is absolutely tragic. My thoughts and prayers to his family. Rest well big man.
-
Can't believe the big man has gone so soon. Glad I was there when he scored for England against Spain at Villa Park. :(
-
Probably already been mentioned on here but a lovely tweet from Brian Little this morning.
-
Gutted, I'd hoped the availability of medical care at the training ground meant a positive outcome. A very sad day.
-
Very sad news. Great player, part of my favourite ever team 95/96.
-
Was my favourite player most of the time he was with us. Wholehearted always. What a shocker.
-
my eldest Daughters all time favourite Villa player
very very sad
-
Devastated a definite 110% player rip big man
-
Ugo was a key part of the squad from 1995-96, my all time favourite season since I've been old enough to follow Billa without being taken by my Dad. Thanks for all the memories, Ugo. God bless you.
-
Gone far too soon. RIP Big Man.
-
How sad. A fantastic player who fought back from an horrendous debut to become a key player in the Villa side of the mid 90's. RIP.
-
That is horrendous, RIP Ugo.
-
Think this will be felt massively both here and Middlesbrough. Had a lump on my throat most the day. Memories of the 95-96 team flooding back. The best we've had in my life time. He was a success for both clubs and by all accounts was held in high esteem by many. Truly sad day.
-
RIP Big Man.
My memories of Ugo -
Hit crossbar during penalty shootout with Tranmere.
Making Dennis Bergkamp look like a schoolboy vs Inter.
Handball goal vs Man City.
Winner at Goodison.
Scored vs Leicester and didn't know how to celebrate it as it had been ages since last goal.
Eye injury vs someone....?
Gone far too soon.
-
RIP Big Man.

Shearer?
Might have been. I remember it put him out for a little while - he was pundit in the Sky Studios for a dull 0-0 at Wimbledon.

Shearer kicked him in the face in 1999 and broke his eye socket. Shearer eh, whoever would've thought it?
-
Merson on Ugo
-
Absolutely gutted. He was ace and a regular when I started going down Villa Park.
Always gave his all, and that was always enough. Deserved to play more for England. Always rated him higher than Southgate.
-
It's horrible to watch how cut up Paul Merson is there. I'm surprised he managed to say what he did.
-
Very sad news. Good memories of better times. Just heard Steve Bruce on the radio paying tribute although he got it wrong saying 'i played against him in the 1994 league cup final'.
-
R.I.P,100% at all times,a sad loss.
just seen this on the BBC website,
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-39669510
-
R.I.P.
-
R.I.P.
Thank you and commiserations on your former player's devastating injury.
-
Two very sad story's, just wept reading some of the tributes to Ugo. Good luck to the Blues player and his family
-
I'm stunned. I just kind of assumed he'd recover. Was a huge part of the team during my favourite era as a fan. Should have got more than four England caps, he really was that good.
-
Another hero of mine from years gone by has passed at a ridiculously young age. Great player. R.I.P. big man.
-
Another sad day for the Villa Family. RIP big man.
All The best to the Hutchinson family too.
-

Soon as I read it was a cardiac arrest I thought the worst. Survival rates are much lower than a heart attack. It's been a very sad day realising one of your favourite players has passed away at a ridiculously young age, bless him.
-
Gutted.
What a lovely fella, saw him in bamboo one night and told my mrs who he was. She went and said hello and he asked how she knew his name? Oh my boyfriend is mad about villa but was to worried about bothering you to say hello she replied. The big man then came over, sat down bought us drinks and talked villa with me for a good 20 minutes before wishing us a good night.
RIP Ugo.
-
RIP Big fella
-
Shocked. 44 years old.
His partnership with Southgate was immense in 1995-96. Just a pity his days at the Villa ended in the "lack of ambition - I'm off to Boro" contradiction.
RIP

True, but I don't think now is the time to discuss why he left. He was a top player for us and that's how I think he should be remembered.
-
Sad news.RIP Big man Ugo
-
RIP Ugo. Knew a fair few folks that knew him back in the 90s, none had a bad word to say about him. Not only a great player but from everything I heard a great bloke as well.
-

Used to see him out on Broad St regularly in the 90s with Yorke, Small etc and he was always friendly, approachable and chatty. Never once did I see him pissed off with fans coming up to him. In fact he enjoyed it. Lovely bloke.
-
Really terrible news. Have felt cut up all day, but then watching the clip of Merse paying his respects has pushed me over the edge.
RIP big man. Thanks for your fantastic service to the greatest football club. Gone far too soon.
-
Fucking hell . . . The last couple of years 🙁😔
I hope we sing his proper song on Sunday - not "one Ugo Ehiogu"
He was only five years older than me - and a lot fitter no doubt
Just shit all round
-

I wonder where we'd have finished that season if he hadn't got injury at that point. We were struggling without Bosnich but Ugo and Southgate were holding things together just about.
Losing Ugo for three months though was the end of our title challenge as we started leaking goals straight away and went from first to 6th that season.
-
RIP. Best wishes to your friends and family Ugo. Thank you for the memories.
-
Ugo, Ugo, Ugo.
Instantly recognisable heading and running style, A true "good egg", my thoughts are with you and your family Ugo.XX
-
Very sad news. He was a great player for us in a world class defence.
Best wishes to his family who will be devastated.
-
It is with great sadness that we're reading another young ex villa has passed.
I was a kid and big Ugo gave me his autograph, so damn happy I was. I remember him keeping Shaun Teale out of the team with big Ron refusing to drop him.
I remember fondly the blades away one game and they had this ferret in midfield who zipped past our midfield until....man mountain Ugo stepped forward and the ferret just bounced off him sending him sprawling. You ain't getting past me son his body seemed to say.
I remember us going top of the league thanks to Ugo's 87th min winner via corner v Owls I think - might have time and place wrong but sure do remember celebrating the goal.
Goodbye Ugo, thanks for the memories, God bless you.😢
-
Only saw him on TV a few months ago at Dalian's funeral, unbelievable... RIP Big Man.
-
What always strikes me when I hear a story like this is how the normality of life can destroyed so easily. I'm the same age. I get up, get dressed say goodbye to my kids/wife fully expect to walk back in later that day returning from work or wherever I'm going. Likewise they tell you they love you and expect you to walk back through that door. It would have been the same for Ugo with his wife and kids. Never did he think the day before "tomorrow's my last day alive", or that morning "I'm not seeing my family and friends ever again". And his wife and kids never thought "that's the last time I'm seeing my husband or dad". I mean at 44, athlete, fit and healthy from what we can tell he's not just dropping dead.
It's just so unimaginable that something happened, so violent and so unexpected that he's no longer with us and reminds us all how very fragile life is. None of us are invincible and it reminds us all to remind those you love that you do love them. Don't take it for granted.
-
Devastating news,life is too short.UTV.

Well said and thoughts with his family at this time.
-
Such sad news of the passing of Ugo. A great servant to our club. A colossus in defence with Southgate, a period when we were an entertaining successful, solid team. RIP UGO. Life is not fair.
-
RIP Ugo. Knew a fair few folks that knew him back in the 90s, none had a bad word to say about him. Not only a great player but from everything I heard a great bloke as well.
I got a job in Bexley in 2005 and my Director grew up with Ugo in Hackney. He said similar platitudes as well and he used to return regularly to be with his mates from that time. I'm pretty sure he mentioned his mum had died around that time but that might be a mis-remembering of a story.
When he first was signed by Ron from the Baggies, I took to calling him batfink because of the bad guy being named Hugo A-Go-Go. Wasn't his first team debut a disaster? He certainly improved massively but who wouldn't when he had Macca around him to learn from.
-
Nope, his debut was a start and complete game in a 3-1 home win over Arsenal in 1991, BFR's 3rd game. The infamous Norwich game was over a year later.
-
Not sure if it's right or wrong but about this time last year I heard the news that my 28 year old nephew had been killed in a car crash and I felt obviously devastated but physically sick. I had the same feeling this morning when I heard this news.
-
It is with great sadness that we're reading another young ex villa has passed.
Goodbye Ugo, thanks for the memories, God bless you.😢
The tackle you mention, was that the game against Sheffield United in the cup, the one where Yorke scored that cheeky chipped penalty? If so, I was just going to post the same thing. It was the hardest fair tackle I think I've ever seen. He absolutely poleaxed the opposition player, it must have felt like being hit by a freight train. I was watching the game with a couple of non Villa supporting mates, and we all winced in unison at that one.
-

There's probably some kind of psychological explanation, that's beyond me right now, hearing about deaths of people who are younger than me seems wrong.
-
fantastic player and big unit,
must be one of the biggest we've had in modern times he's definitely bigger than Big Ben maybe John Carew but Ugo was probably taller
-
I loved him, a fantastic centre half. You'd think he was beaten and then he'd cover half pitch in about 5 strides, wrap one of those massive legs in front of the other player and expertly stick it out for a throw.
Imperious, we were so blessed at the centre half for years it seemed, but he was second only to God.
Rest in peace.
-
I served Ugo at the checkout in Sainsbury's Mere Green when he was rumoured to be off to Boro. I wittered on, totally star struck, about how he can't leave because Southgate wasn't half the player without Ugo next to him. After amusing me off he went only to return 5 minutes later to inform me I forgot to give him his £50 cash back. Being so young and star struck I was totally mortified but he laughed it off.
I've managed to get a 5m x 3m banner printed in time for use in The Holte on Saturday with permission from the club. It's simply a graphic of him with no text in order to keep it neutral. Apparently the players are going to pictured with it prior to the game. I hope it doesn't offend anyone I just think that he was such a colossus for us that he deserved this tribute in such a high profile fixture.
-
One of the great players of my childhood, i started following villa when I was about 9 towards the End of the 94/95 season, so my first season proper was 95/96, a season we as a club have never matched.
Ugo along with Southgate and McGrath formed the best centre half trio I have ever seen, along with the best defence we have had since I started following Villa in my opinion.
An immense player to have not only at the back but also attacking corners, always seemed a decent enough man off the Pitch when interviewed too.
Rest in peace Ugo. Best wishes to his family at this time.
-
Fair play ACvilla for the banner, it will be part of a fitting tribute I'm sure

Absolutely devastated, a Hero from my youth, even though my age. Loved him, my first car was nick named Ugo. My thoughts are with his family, god knows how they feel. RIP

The one mentioned 3 posts above yours.

This was shocking news. It was such a privilege to watch Ugo with God and Southgate back in the day, they were a formidable defensive uit.
Taken at such a young age. My thoughts are with his firiends and family. Sunday is going to be even more emotional now.
RIP Ugo.

Yeah it was that cup game.
Another fond memory was we played Leeds at home I think and Ugo was out. Barry filled in and their nasty centre forward swatted Barry aside like a fly. Short time later we play them again and Ugo is in and their striker couldn't shrug him off. Big, powerful presence I will always remember him by.
I'm not able to go to Sunday's game, if somebody could post a pic of the banner on here that'd be great.

Fab player and a nice bloke. Holte Enders in the sky. RIP.

I was devestated as it was, but Paul Merson has just broken my heart.

Seen a video of Merson being asked to discuss it on SSN which was upsetting to watch.
Very sad news. Managed to get his autograph on about 3 occassions as a kid when seeing him out and about and he was always brilliant.
An excellent defender, shocking at attacking the ball at a corner. I still joke about his 50p piece head when Baker or whoever sticks one a mile wide.
Terrible news, genuinely awful. It's not often stuff like this with people you don't know gets me, but this one has. Horrible
Well done on the banner.
-
Rip Ugo.
A man mountain,a warrior and genuinely one of us forever now.Somebody whom we all associate with this great football club.
I can only echo previous comments about him on the pitch.I'll always recall the languid running technique, the total commitment to attack the ball, and the clap at the Holte end at the end of proceedings. I've never seen anyone better at shielding the ball... Whenever he was in front of the forward,no one ever was able to nick it off him as he dummied and strutted.
Always approachable out and about..And willing to discuss and debate the issues at B6.Always used to see him post home game in San Carlo on temple Street.. Normally in company with bozzie and Yorke.. Talking shop about the day's events...
Thank you Ugo
-
AC Villa you are a star. I hope the banner will be photographed with the players in front of it and then copies can be sold for the Heart FOundation. It would be good to get a little positive out of something totally negative.
Your anecdote reminds me of a villa mate of mine who was working on the phones at a local cash and carry, and Ugo rang up to order some stuff. So my mate said how much he was looking forward to seeing him next year, and Ugo laughed and said 'depends on what club I am playing for'. Part of the dispute which led him and Gareth S to leave for Middlesborough I suppose, but he was very pleasant, my mate was impressed.
In over 50 years of supporting the Villa I can only ever remember 3 centre back pairings - Evans and McNaught in the European Cup team, Laursen and Mellberg, and Southgate and Ehiogu. A wonderful player and seems to have been highly thought of all over. He must not be forgotten
-
A professional footballer in every sense. RIP Ugo.

Southgate and Ehiogu were much better than Laursen and Mellberg in my opinion. Their playing style just worked better together, and of course they played many more games together, mainly due to Laursen's injuries.

AC any chance of a picture of your banner on here?

Great article by Henry Winter in The Times today. Difficult to read without a tear in the eye and a mention for that H&V front cover mentioned a few pages back.
-
Banner looks good. Nice job.
-
That Merson video,...... :'(
However if you go on further, they interview Bryan Robson for him signing Ugo (and Southgate) to Boro and then followed on with McClaren. Now obviously before he started his eulogy, they told him that "remember that with Ugo and Southgate in defence, you won the only major trophy in Boro's history".
His eulogy: "...and with both him and Southgate, they won their only major trophy which must be the highlight of their professional careers."
-
I posted yesterday "I'm sure that I can recall him being either the 1st black England player or the 1st black England captain when playing for the U23's"
I have now found the reference but it was England U21's

Random eBay purchase which hoping will mature into a decent investment.

Impressive tribute to Ugo @ Wembley
-
The interview with Dwight on Sky was as poignant as Merse and his outpouring.
-
Shocked. 44 years old.
His partnership with Southgate was immense in 1995-96. Just a pity his days at the Villa ended in the "lack of ambition - I'm off to Boro" contradiction.
RIP
I think he may have been rechristened "Ego" on here after that (and his agent, Steve Kutner had his surname re-worded).
In fairness he went onto win a trophy during his time at Middlesboro, we floundered and flattered to deceive in the same period so he arguably made the right choice.
-
I remember he, Southgate and McGrath were absolutely rock solid in that LC final. Imperious. For me he was a better defender than Southgate, just had untimely injuries sadly. On his day, every bit as good as someone like Sol Campbell or Ledley King, both of whom got far more caps. Probably better actually.
RIP
-
Never saw the fuss about Ledley King.
-
The interview with Dwight on Sky was as poignant as Merse and his outpouring.
I've just seen that, and it was very moving and difficult to watch.
-
Not been able to post since the news, due to techni bob bobs my end, but RIP Ugo and thoughts with your wife and two children and thank you for your service to the best team in the world Aston Villa.
-
Never saw the fuss about Ledley King.
Really? He was brilliant. But always injured
-
Never saw the fuss about Ledley King.
No me neither. He spent so long injured it built up some kind of mythology. Ugo was miles better.
-
For those at the game today, please do an extra clap on my behalf - a wonderful player and by all accounts a great personality off the pitch; he will be sorely missed.
-
Never saw the fuss about Ledley King.
Really? He was brilliant. But always injured
This
-
I thought Ledley King was a very good defender, but hugely unlucky with injuries. Same with Lucas Radebe.
-
Deeply sad to hear of this loss. Was one of my favourties growing up and a big part of that excellent Brain Little side. A proper old school defender, good at both ends , and was just a true Pro and consistent performer. Clearly he's given back to the game and was well loved by everyone. The tributes the last few days have really moved me. And I agree he was unlucky not to get more England caps. But its just so sad. RIP big man. And thoughts to Ugo's family at this horrible time.
Was interesting too to hear of his work as a DJ and record label manager too. Cool that he was involved in the 1975's career. With this in mind I will be dedicated my radio show on Thursday to Ugo.

Thanks, I'm really happy with it. Guy turned up in a Ford Fiesta to collect it at 8:30 this morning, I'd already explained it couldn't be folded so I ended up delivering it myself to VP at 9 this morning. Had a chuckle at the queue already formed outside the social.

Now that things have calmed down a bit and I've had chance to reflect I am somewhat overwhelmed with sadness re Ugo.
A 44 year old guy with a wife and young kids, fit as a fiddle and by all accounts and eulogies posted a top notch guy, taken from us far too soon.
I loved football in that era, it was still, just about, a game for the fans. Villa were good, attendances were great, the atmospheres were electric. Chanting Ugo's name before each and every game and him applauding The Holte.
I often look back on his infamous performance against Norwich, still comfortably the worst professional performance I've ever witnessed. To come back from that the way he did is a real measure of the man. I was there with my old man and brother. I don't really see eye to eye with both any more. A sad situation with some great memories.
I don't get down much, if at all anymore. I miss the Villa. I miss that life. I have a near 3 year old lad who appears to be very keen on all sports. I'm hoping he can awaken my passion again. I want to have that card back in my wallet. I want to have that buzz when I wake up on a Saturday (or Sunday, or Friday morning) where me and my son can indulge in a joint passion.
I want him to see that banner displayed in The Holte and have him ask me who it is. "Let me tell you a story son, it all started with a game against Norwich".
I'll be back. I know in my heart I will but by God for a team of Ugo's. What would you give?
Rest in peace big man. There have been some touching tributes this weekend and I hope your family has gained some appreciation of how you were loved the football world over.
-
Well down to Small Heath for not sabotaging the applauses today - sorry if it was ever in doubt.

Sums it up for me too. It was the memories of my happiest time as a Villa fans that came flooding back.
-
I went to pieces during the video on the big screen's of Ugo's goals. I bloody loved him at Villa and was truly annoyed when we sold him and replaced him with Alpay!
I thought h'd come back to us in his coaching capacity and we could put to bed the bad receptions he recieved when he came back with Boro.I'd like to think he knew how much we loved him. It never felt right when he left us. Bit like Yorkie in that regard. He was a collosous and a lynch pin of the sides that were a part of my growing up and happiest times as a Villa fan.
Anyway, I'm waffling now. Rest In Piece, Ugo.
-
You're not - you speak for a lot of us with your what you said.
Given their longevity at the club during an exciting time of growth, success and expectation; when the likes of Ugo/Yorke, (even their other good mate Bozzie), all left, a part of all our Villa-supporting way disappeared for those of us who were around in the 90's.

God that's horrible.
-
Hey! No need!
I thought Alan Shearer might have had the humility to express contrition for the time he nearly blinded Ugo or at least look red-faced when talking about him at half-time during Saturday's game.
But probably not the time or place. In fairness, he did say he had met him at PFA(?) events before so he may well have apologised before.
Ehiogu's eye
Sat, May 1, 1999
Sports injuries are never for the squeamish, but even by the standards of habitual leg breaks, snapped ligaments, fractured cheekbones and sundry stitches, Aston Villa defender Ugo Ehiogu's (left) eye injury is gruesome.
He needed two operations to save the sight in his eye after being caught in the face by Alan Shearer's boot in a league match. He hasn't started a game since January, but Villa boss John Gregory is thinking of including him against Manchester United to face old team-mate Dwight Yorke today.
Gregory revealed the details of the damage. "It was a very bad injury. Ugo had to have the skin on his head cut and rolled right back so the surgeon could get at the back of his eye and perform a delicate operation.
"Ugo is left with a scar from ear to ear. At the moment it is quite vivid and looks like he is wearing a pair of headphones. The specialist's report is good and his eye is clearing. We thought he might need a third operation."
-
God that's horrible.
Have to agree. It looks like something from a horror film.
And I did think that Shearer seemed quite upset and respectful when talking about Ugo on Saturday. I think he came to know him fairly well.
-
Can't see that this has been posted anywhere. Ugo's wife Gemma has a JustGiving page set up to start a charity in his name to give all kids the chance to play football. It was something he was working on before he passed away.

Go on a tenner wont break you.

Surprised John Gregory wasn't there. Him and Ugo didn't part on the best of terms it's fair to say. Hope there's nothing in that and he just couldn't make it.

I saw this earlier. It could well have been a mistake. But they have previous form for being ******, so won't be giving them the benefit of the doubt.
-
They've said it was a mistake as he was on the list last time Small Heath were after a manager. As he was a coach at the time, that seems feasible.
They should have done more rigorous checks before publishing, but it being a mistake still seems a lot more likely than it being a deliberate insult to a player who has passed away.
-
Of course it's a mistake. An unfortunate one of course but no business would do that deliberately.
-
I'd like to think it was a genuine error, as it's them i'm far from convinced though.
-
Just shows the level of staff they employ. Always mentioned on talk crap so can't be taken as a reputable company
-

I've no experience of Paddy Power. So here goes. Guessing their modus operandi is to pay minimum wages to their workers combined with an over-reliance on automation. What could possibly go wrong?

They are a vey well run organization with a market cap well in excess of £7,000 million squids following the merger with BetFair, but they have tended to go over the top with their advertizing, often at the expense of AVFC in recent years, and mostly opting for controversial gimmicks. Only a matter of time before these particular chickens came home to roost.

They're market leaders, known in the industry for their excellent, innovative advertising, and one of the largest companies in Ireland.
You don't get to that point by employing idiots.

I read a while ago their marketing guru was apparently Harriet Harman's son.
Main one I remember was Bendtner wearing their pants at the euros.

Working in the gambling industry, the two mantras I've heard most often are "do what bet365 do" and "do what Paddy Power do". For different reasons, those two are light years ahead of most of the competition.

I will believe that it's a genuine error and was a cut and paste job form the last time that bet was available with a slight mishap. We all make mistake, some are more severe than others obviously, but for me it was a mistake and they have since apologized.

Ugo-a Player, with Power, Purpose and Poise. You were honest and genuine and advertised the game of football in the right way. You were intelligent and innovative especially in your last role at spurs. You brought genuine joy to tens of thousands of people with your excellent talent, skill and leadership. These are all qualities which actually mean something when attributed to the right person. Thanks for the memories Ugo! RIP big man. UTV

Paddy power were one of the first companies to fully embrace social media and let it define them. They have created a soccer am style company persona and it's proven to be very successful.
To add a bit of relevance back to Villa Unibet are another one that has done a great job with creating a personality for themselves, at least in the scandinavian market where they sell themselves as studious analysts of the game which is a very effective approach in Norway at least (and I suspect in Sweden and Denmark where the culture around football is fairly similar). They're like the Klopp of betting companies.
-
I suppose one could force oneself to be outraged at such a
tasteless publicity stunt regrettable error but I've rather hie me online to put £25 on Ozzie Osbourne for whom they are offering fair odds.

Correct for over here. They set out to market themselves as "by players, for players". As an added bonus there's a couple of Villa shirts knocking about in their current TV adds.

Did the odds shorten with Ugo now out of the PaddyPower running?

Thank you, I appreciated reading that. Good lesson to end on / learn from too.
It perhaps just lacked an image of the pair of them, shoulder to shoulder on duty in claret and blue. I'm sure someone here will oblige though.

Thank you PWS. Finding myself with an urge to remember the sense of confidence of those two going into battle together...

Ugo came to my mind today, and on Google I came across that article. A very nice tribute from Southgate.
I still can't believe Ugo passed away at such a young age. I loved him.

Remember years ago being on a first aid course with a chap called Hugo. He could talk and bore for England which usually meant we were late finishing. We used to say to him.....Hugo that way and we'll go this way.....he never got it.

Nice this from stand in Spurs boss Ryan Mason tonight after the win v Soton "It's been a busy day at the club, it's also four years to the day since Ugo Ehiogu passed so I want to dedicate that to him and his family - everyone at the club still remembers and thinks of him".

Jesus Christ, four years already? RIP Ugo.
-
Wow, I did think of Ugo as the camera panned to the scoreboard as his banner is positioned right beside it.
Lovely touch by Ryan Mason.
And five years to the day that Prince died. Christ, life flashes by.
-
Mason was one of the three Spurs shithouses that combined to get Benteke sent off in 2014. Not that I'm bitter, mind...
However, after his kind words re Ugo, I have decided to reduce his punishment (when I become World President) to a custodial sentence. I may even have him put in the same block as Blair, Cameron and Johnson!
-
Nah, Mason can do one. The same day was nine years since my old man died too and he didn't say a word about that!
RIP Ugo. One of the very best I've seen.
-
He was a tremendous defender, but not really a footballer.
Sorry about your dad, btw.
-
I still smile at how the PA announcers at away grounds struggled to pronounce his name, especially in the early days when he was a young substitute and not well known. A lot of them just bottled it and mumbled something that sounded slightly like they thought his name should sound.
-
Was watching a game from early 2000s the other day on the Vilaboy channel and Ugo and Jloyld were both starting.
Unbelievable to think we've lost both of them in last 5 years. And Dalian of course.
-
Does Villaboy still post new content/old vids? He was on a roll for a while, very generously sharing old stuff but I've not seen updates on FB for quite a while.

My initial nickname for him was the Villain from Batfink. Was’nt a million miles away.
