A way to divert from the agony of following the VIlla is to follow the fortunes of IF Brommapojkarna, a small club in the Swedish third division (ground capacity 7,500). They keep on playing through the summer, and their manager is Olof Mellberg, aged 38 and starting his managerial career the old way. So far its been interesting.... Five games, four wins and a draw. No point in making any predictions, but top of the league, Goal Difference Plus 7 and 13 points, and the next four clubs have all got nine points each.
The legend that was Olof the Nordic God continues. Lets hope he builds on his good start.
-
Sign him up.

There's only one Olof Mellberg (https://www.instagram.com/p/BFBn5S3j8Jb/?taken-by=ifbrommapojkarna)
-
He looks even harder in that picture than he did when he was with us. I wouldn't pick a fight with him.
-
My missus certainly would :-[

I think I would. I'm not into men, but he's certainly a good looking chap
-
yes he's bringing out the Nordic noir in me too, as is Wallender.

I need your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle.
-
We should get a pre season friendly arranged now that all our usual haunts are direct competitors.
One day he'll return.

So would I.

OMG I'm in love [again]
-
Surely there's someone in our squad now with his mentality? What a man he was for us, in Villa dream team(of my age) I'd put Laursen sweeper with God and Mellberg centre halves cos Mellberg and Laursen is hard to split for me.
Grealish I do believe has the fight for Villa in him just he got no focker to back him up, at the moment.
-
I ruddy love Olof. Quality player and fucking great bloke. I miss the big viking. Ditto Laursen.
-
Wouldn't want him - purely because every defeat would be a dagger in the heart and if it ended in tears that would be awful, I love the bloke but no - there'd just be too much riding on it.
-
Same. Don't need the modern Villa tainting the legacy of the likes of the viking.
-
Sad that it took an own goal from Cieran Clark to get a draw against the republic - and sorry for Cieran as well - but better news for the Swedes from their third division.
Olof Mellberg has made a decent start to his first managerial job. After 9 games in a 26 game division, his team IF Brommapojkarna (if that is the spelling) are top of the league by four points. Played 6, drawn 2, lost 1. 20 points and a goal difference of +10. Next two teams are on 16.
Early days, but its the way to go. Onward and upward for the next 17 games we hope. Worth keeping an eye on.
-
Cheers Trevor, good to see a potential future manager doing so well.
-
"I just feel, I've got the feeling, that I just don't like them,"
-
Mellberg's one of my all time favourite players, loved the bloke when he was here, he served us well.
Who knows how well his managerial career will go, would be quite cool in 10 years time though him being manager and someone like Laursen being assistant or involved.
-
i hope Di Matteo will bring in couple of vikings to go with some Italians to replace our fabulous 5.
-
Yeah, we need a hairy-arsed Viking defender or two, if there's any left in the game.
-
here is an update on Olof's first try at management. Started well but its got tougher. After 9 games his team was 4 points clear at the top. But dropped points with draws and have been caught up after 14 - half way through their season and with a break till August 21st.
The Table shows the top 4 only separated by 2 points
IF BRom... p 14 points 29
Vasalund p14 points 29
Akropolis p14 points 28
Vastera p14 points 27
Umea
-
and I will complete this despite the internet
Umea p14 points 22
Only the top two go up. So Olof has a fight on his hands over the last 12 games of the season.
It looks like 4 teams are in it, so onward to September and whether he can face up to the challenge. Anyone going near that part of Stockholm? I heard there was a villa fan in the area but trail went cold.
-
Put this in the Mellberg thread in "Villa Memories", but this seems a better place for it...
Mellberg took over last season at Brommapojkarna in Sweden's third tier.
Tonight they beat Dalkurd to clinch a second successive promotion and ensure that they will be in the top flight next season. They've now gone four points clear of second-placed Dalkurd and look in an excellent position to clinch back to back league titles.
They also made the Semi-Finals of the Swedish Cup, defeating four teams from a higher division along the way.
Very impressive start to Olof's managerial career. 👏👏👏
-
Was he manager for both seasons??
-
Well done Olof. Next season win the Allsvenskan and next stop is Villa Park.
-
Was he manager for both seasons??
Yes. There was some talk that he might have to leave when they got promoted last year, as he didn't have sufficient coaching badges, but he's still there so I assume that was resolved.
-
How good would it be if he was our manager in a few years time.

I absolutely loved him at Villa, and still love him now. Well done, Olof.
Hope you're well Aftab, mate.

Another vote for Olof.

Probably still better than Samba/Elphick/Richards...

I think you'd make less calamities than those guys Lee.

Probably still better than Samba/Elphick/Richards...
Not hard to be fair. Good job we have Clark & Sulliman
-
Balti, if those two are picked ahead of Samba, Elphick, maybe not Richards, out of preference not because of further injuries, it will mean Bruce has had a visit from a ghost of Christmas past and turned over night into Pep.
-
Sadly, you are right.
-
More suggestions that Olof might not be able to coach in the top flight next season. It's difficult to work out due to the vagueries of Google Translate, but I think the required coaching course would take until April to complete, by which time the new season would already be underway. So he is reliant on receiving special dispensation, which the authorities haven't confirmed that they will be providing.
-
Think he will be ok as he is doing the course so he probably get a temporary permit for a season.

Plus you'd think he may already have evidenced he's not bad as a manager too.
-
yes and that and I would rather have Mellberg managing Aston Villa than the like of Sven Goran Eriksson ;)
-
Olof leaving Pojkarna.
