Title: 3-3 1990, Graham Taylors Claret and Blue Army
Post by: Kingthing on October 11, 2013, 02:50:29 PM

What a cracking sing song that was.

I've just been talking with an Everton fan at work about this game and he says he remembers our singing and that aswell as the away section we had a third of the top tier of their main stand.

I remember the footage from the "Goals of the season Video" but I can't seem to find anything online. Does anyone know of anything?

Glorious day. The song started in the first half, carried on through half time and into the second half. Not sure if it was official that Taylor was leaving to take the England job but eveyone knew he was. The reception he got when he came back out after the final whistle was unbelievable.

That day will remain in my memory as one of the best in my time following Villa.

I was in the back of my mates Ford Escort Cabriolet, and as we came into Liverpool I was stood up in the back waving his old European Cup Winners flag. All along Queens Drive and into Stanley Park, horns blasting, fans cheering and the sun shining.

We were on the back row in the upper Park Stand and had a wonderful view of both our support and the Scousers, staring open mouthed at the barrage of noise.

No one wanted to leave at the end until Taylor had come back out to say goodbye, I remember Ellis briefly poking his head out of the tunnel to a chorus of booing.

The affection afforded to Taylor was exceptional, I have never witnessed anything like it for any manager or player since. It made his second spell so difficult to handle.

The best support I've ever seen or heard from anyone, anywhere, ever. I was hoarse for days after. And to think that the day could've felt like such a huge anti-climax, given that a week prior we still had a (granted, very very slim) chance of nicking the title, and the man who'd given us all renewed hope was about to bugger off mid-job. The way it never let up during half-time was brilliant. Pop down for a pie, come back in, carry on singing. A day to look back on when you're thinking "what's the point?", and remind oneself that it can be an amazing thing to be a part of. I fkn LOVE being Villa, me.

I was in the top tier of the stand at the side of the pitch.

Without doubt, right up there with the best away days of all time.

Our support was absolutely incredible that day. Just never stopped throughout.

When Little Tone put a cross (shot ?) over that went past Southall and in off the post to put us 3-2 up, the noise was unreal.

I was only telling the kids at work (alright, apprentices) about this the other day.

Sheffield Wednesday about fifteen months later (Big Fat Ron's first in charge for us) was great but doesn't come close to that Everton game.

Great Day Fabulous atmosphere and the sense that everyone just kept wanting to step it up a bit louder. It went on this way all through half time and into the second half. It was Taylors last game and we all knew it.

Met an Everton fan on holiday in the closed season and he said, "we tried singing back but you lot just would not shut up".................. Classic.

We did get set upon whilst trying to drive away from a car park at the Kop end wearing Villa shirts..we were only 17. The Everton game tops it though.

I remember an everton fan saying tome that half-time was unreal."Everyone else just goes to get their pies. You lot just din't stop singing'.

I also remember going the next season and the atmosphere was quite similar because of whathad happened the season before. its the one where Platt cleared off the everton line to make sure we lost 1-0.

Isn't that also the game where Keown and his missus were driving behind us for a while and we exchanged 'friendly' hand gestures with him?

Marvellous day which always crops up in pub chats about the best away days ever, along with that Sheffield Weds game and most of the second division season.

Over two decades on and it still ranks as one of my best Villa-supporting days ever.  Certainly for when there hasn't been a trophy paraded at the end of it.

Just from the atmosphere on the journey you knew it was going to be a special day. My brother and I look the football special from New Street and then Merseyside Transport laid on their shabbiest buses to get us from Lime Street to Goodison. The driver took us via Anfield, which considering that they'd pipped us for the title was a bit of a piss-take, and met with wholesale derision.  I can vaguely remember some hilarious chanting aimed at various nonplussed Scousers referring to Joey from Bread.

The chanting of Graham Taylor's Claret-n-Blue Army was amazing.  Even when we fell behind at one stage it just intensified. And the ovation for the man himself was wonderful.  A fitting end to wonderfully over-achieving season and a great tribute to the man.

In many ways, though, on reflection I think that match also marks the end of an era.  Football and our club was special to all of us who followed it through the dark days of the 80s.  Then that summer there was Italia 90 and Gazza's tears...and that in its way begot the Premier League, the hype, the money and football as it is today.

I moved to Chester shortly after that and the Evertonians I knew were still banging on about our support that day for years afterwards. They were particularly impressed by the fact that we didn't shut up and got louder and louder as the game progressed. Shame I wasn't even a Villa fan then!

It was a marvellous day.

I remember when I was 10 or so, and used to watch us in the late 70s, the thing I always remember is that we had a certain swagger about us. It's hard to describe, but I heard Lee Child interviewed recently and he said he started supporting us when he went to see us play at Albion, with someone trying to indoctrinate him as a Baggie, but it was all about Villa, as we were like a bunch of swashbuckling pirates.

That's exactly what i used to think as a kid back then. Not so much (oddly) when we won the league, but more so before. Although that Mortimer goal at home to Liverpool in the title year is one of my favourite Villa goals ever because it has such a big chunk of swagger about it.

Anyway, I digress, that first match under Atkinson at Hillsborough, I had the same feeling, and as the season went on, we showed that quite a lot. I loved that side, and that was the perfect away match.

A game that sticks in my mind from the early BFR days is in the cup at Grimsby. I think we sang BFR's claret and blue army all the way through half time. Which seemed to unsettle the local police for some reason.

The Grimsby fans weren't too pleased at the end either, judging by their aggressive pitch invasion at the end.

Two pointless observations of that day
1) Saw George Gavin on the seafront, eating fish & chips
2) It's closest I've ever been to being seriously injured at a football match. Ray Houghton's early goal prompted a massive surge down the terraces causing a clash at the front where fans were still arriving. It was a good job that Grimsby left the terrace gates open.

I'm 99.9% sure the game at Grimsby was 0-0. I have vague memories of walking past a chip shop on the way back to the car after the game where it was 'going off'. It seemed everyone in the shop was fighting. Although it was quite a small shop so in reality it was probably only about a dozen fans.

Was that a League Cup tie? I think we lost the 2nd leg didn't we?

I was referring to an FA Cup match, think it might have been 3rd round. We won 2-1, with Dwight Yorke scoring the winner.

Yes, League Cup in the 'early doors' of Big Ron's reign. We drew 1-1 at home and went out on away goals thanks to a great goalkeeping performance from Steve Sherwood (seriously) who may have been knocking on fifty by then.

And the Everton game goes into the annals of genuinely great sporting memories.  Getting to our car afterwards in Stanley Park a full half hour after the game had finished I still had a tingle of pride as we stuck the scarves out of the windows again all the way back home.  And then to finish off a magnificent steak pie and pint at the Red Lion in Earlswood.

I remember the Everton fans applauding us as they left the ground, as indeed did Neville Southall. There was a mini bus of us who then stopped off in Nantwich on the way home, as a certain person had put in the H&V magazine that was the place to go.
I recall it was quite a nice place and we stood out like a sore thumb.
We then adjourned to Stafford, where there was an altercation with the locals, happy days.

A guy two rows in front of me at Everton on Saturday starting singing it, the young kids next to him gave him strange looks but I got it.

Will that day ever be topped as an away experience?

Never. It was the end of an era, both for Villa and for English football.

The most perfect, nonchlant free kick ever.

If anyone ever asks how good Sid was, you could just replay that clip.

Indeed.  So it begs the question why he didn't get more?   Maybe we just didn't get many free kicks :-)

Incredible when you think we were robbed at the end and didn't even win the match.
