My dad died yesterday at 6.30 am.
He grew up in Small Heath but remarkably was a Villa fan! (Must have been a bit of a tough guy in his youth, but we knew him as a quiet, witty and very gentle man.) His father worked for the club in the 40's and 50's and Dad went along as a child and then kept up the interest, even when he worked overseas. He took me and my brother along to VP for the first time in the 70's (I was very little!) and took his grandsons along during the 90's.
Dad got a season ticket from us all as a retirement present and we held his 70th birthday in The Corner Flag.
I went to matches with him up till a few years ago, when his general state of health got too bad for him to walk to his seat - he used the lift to get up to the right level in the Witton Lane (DE) Stand for a few years.
He enjoyed watching bits of AVTV I found online for him and getting the signed ball auctioned on here at the end of last season for his birthday this year. Unfortunately the combination of steadily worsening breathing problems and an aggressive, fast-developing liver cancer over the last 6 weeks has ensured that that was his last birthday, but as he said last week, he did see the last FA cup final and will carry on cheering the Villa from Up There in the sky.
I am finding that there is a massive gap in my life right now, without him. Goodbye Dad, and thanks.

Thinking about you and your family at this sad time

Well put Lou. If you're anything like me you'll keep a virtual Dad in your head for the rest of your life, doling out advice, tutting where necessary, but there'll always be moments that you wish he'd seen or heard. Let's hope Villa provide some of those moments.
-
Thanks again for all your kind comments and for the pms, they have really helped a lot, this week.
-

My sincere condolences. Lovely piece. I lost my dad many years ago, but as the years have passed I've come to appreciate him more and more and as Rocket Reducer has already said, he'll be with you forever.

Some of the fantastic comments on here when my Dad died bought me to tears, it's a lovely little community we have here.
-
RIP, so sad for your loss.
-
Condolences Louzie. It's a horrible time but it will get better. It sounds trite but time really is a great healer.
Our dad died 15 years ago. We had one of the paviours in his memory outside the Trinity Road Stand and TC & I go and have a chat with him before every home match - even though we know he's not really there!
-
Very sorry to hear that Louzie, take care.
-
Very sads news Louzie, thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
I lost my dad 4 years ago this September, like you and many of us on here our dads are why we support the Villa. He's just gone from sight not the heart, I still have a chat with mine and the passing of time does help some.
-
Sorry to hear of your loss Lou. Thinking of you.
-
Thanks to everybody for your kind comments. I really have appreciated them.
Funeral on Wednesday.
I'd also like to acknowledge the fantastic support for 'hospice at home' that we had from our District Nurse team, Marie Curie, Macmillan, and staff from St Giles and John Taylor hospices. I had no idea.
-
Sorry to hear this Louizie. Hope the day went as well as is possible.
-
Thanks Joe - Yes it went very well, thanks - lots of his and my mother's friends were there, and the rain held off almost all afternoon.
Strange day, but ok.
-
Sorry to hear about this. Best wishes to you.
-
Thanks; also, good to meet you, PWS and Redsox yesterday before the match.

Another here that has only just read this. My condolences to you and your family on your loss, Louzie.
-
Sorry so late Louzie0. Sorry for your news. He sounds like a special Man.
-
Thanks Rudy and Simba, really appreciate your posts.
Since August, we've lost Dad's sister and two old friends of my parents', so the funerals have been a bit unremitting, recently. Very proud of my mother, she's been to them all, no idea how she does it. That generation is tough!

Just wanted to mark a year for my Dad as a Holtender in the sky.
