Title: Pires - 'I may retire at the end of the season'

Robert Pires is weighing up whether to retire or to play abroad when his short-term contract with Aston Villa expires this summer.

The former Arsenal midfielder signed a six-month contract before Christmas and has made only a handful of appearances for the midlands club.

Pires is 37 and will weight up all his options at the end of the campaign.

He said: "I'm still playing in the Premier League so I get noticed. People haven't forgotten about me.

"I'm prepared to retire in May if that's what it comes to.

"But I am also ready to go wherever an interesting proposition comes along - be it Qatar or the United States.

"I've even had an offer from Australia.

"But it's a case of one thing at a time and I'll look at that at the end of the season."

Pires insists he never joined Villa for financial gain.

He said: "I always look at the sporting challenge - as I always have.

"At Villa, I'm paid on a match-by-match basis with a small fixed salary, so I didn't come here for the money."

I wonder what a 'small' salary is for someone like him.

At least Pires get's used for the 10k pw.

Salifou is on the same and does fuck all.
In fact, by joing Villa and doing nothing, he's become a millionaire.

Well he's played 4 games. And he's only 27, we'll tap into that potential at some point.

4 games, in 4 years. I know Balaban cost us considerably more, but at least he fucked off after 2 years. We'll probably still be paying Salifou a salary when he's 50, who'd notice he's retired? I don't care if he's a "nice lad to have around" as seems to be mentioned when his name is brought up, it's a football club not a pub.

Salifou is the Villa version of that bloke who snuck onto the pitch in a Man U kit to have his picture taken with the team before the Champions League final.  I'm sure everybody looks at him at and wonders who he is, but he's got a Villa kit on so it must be OK.

It's truly incredible, almost on a par with the fake Weah cousin incident with Southampton, except they never gave him a 3 year contract.

Salifou has trousered upwards of £1.5m from us. Criminal.

He nearly got shot though. I bet they were too scared to boot him out or sell him after that.

still compared to what we're likely to lose on the likes of Ireland in wages and transfer fee's i guess Salifou is the least of our problems

I know he is slow, but this sounds a bit drastic. can they not find a nice field near the Loire to let him trot around in his dotage.

Wll Mr Pires you can retire now for all i care, we have sent a better player than you out on loan so you can put your lazy french arse on the bench, if you had any feeling what so ever for our club, you wouldnt be off talkiing to the press about your retirement plans, you would be putting all your efforts and energy supporting your team mates towards getting the few wins we need to stay in this division. You are another sponger taking a salary because we have a dopy manager that just happens to come from the same country as you.

Pires in an interview with the telegraph today clearly likes the Villa and wants us to do well. He was the heartbeat of our best win since the opening day against Blackburn, and IMO should have started the Wolves game, and ditto should start the Newcastle one. He says he wants to be a coach and knows his role is to help the young players with their game. Gets far too much unfair stick for me.

Darren I love the way you dove in there to protect the part of our mother tongue which is the principle of the protection of the past participle.
