PART ONE: LUCCA - ITALY

I thought it'd be interesting to open a thread where we can post some nice pics of us proudly wearing the  Villa colours around the world.
I begin with this photo of me and my daughter Caterina Olivia in the Piazza Anfiteatro  of Lucca, one of the most beautiful Italian medieval cities.

Odd enough, in Lucca there is a street called Via del Calcio, that means Football street, it's a street where in the Middle Age people  played with the ball, the ancestor of modern football. . .

I don't have any pics of me wearing claret and blue around the world, but one thing I will say is that you're right, Archie, Lucca really is a beautiful place.

I don't have any pics of me wearing claret and blue around the world, but one thing I will say is that you're right, Archie, Lucca really is a beautiful place.

I've been to Lucca several times had a few meals and beers at the cafe in your picture.

ASCOLI PICENO - ITALY

This is  Piazza del Popolo in Ascoli Piceno, one of my favourite Italian medieval cities.
The XIV Century is the golden century of Ascoli, whose center is built in a awhite marble called "travertino", and that boasts a lot of ancient towers (there were more than 200 in the Middle Age), churches, squares and mansions.

Castel del Monte, in the southern region of Apulia, is a site protected by Unesco as world heritage of the humanity.

Was in the shopping centre in Wollongong (about 75km south of Sydney) yesterday and saw someone walking around with the NTL shirt from the 2000/01 season (I think it's that one - I always remember Hadji and Kachloul wearing it).

This is my buen retiro on the hills when I need to relax.
You can't help but notice that the light blue of the bike (that I have painted as I didn't like, for obvious reasons, the original royal blue that you can see in the pic with Garry Thompson) is perfectly harmonized with the proper Villa claret of the shoes :) .

Not when that pic was being taken I bet!

I earned a medal just for being there, so yes, in theory, I was earning a medal when that picture was taken!
Actually that was taken on New Year's Eve 1995, being away from home and my then newly pregnant wife was pretty hard.

Still in touch with a few, we have a reunion every year.
I was coming to the end of my Army career by then, too many such tours were taking their toll, still managed to fit a stint in Kosovo in for good measure though, glad I got out before Afghanistan kicked off. There are two people in that picture older than me though, I guess I just had a hard paper round as a kid!

I am quite a regular at Udine as there is always a great, not intimidating (I'd say a very "British")  atmosphere at the stadium.
But Udinese is not my team, and, as the Villa's father foundators were Scottish  I use to support the Scottish teams when thay play in Italy, so  I supported the Bhoys,  Frank.
Today I was a bit deluded, though.
Celtic fans  are 99% Irish (a fact that tragically reminded me of Richard Dunne even in this occasion ;)) and only 1% Scottish.
Obviously, I have nothing against Ireland and the Irish, au contraire in 1990 I supported their National team in Italy and Paul Mc Grath is my hero.

But I remember then when I attended  Bologna / Heart of Midlothian in 1990 there was a massive contingent of Hearts supporters with kilt and bagpipes, and the atmosphere in the city was very friendly and much more thrilling.  8)
I expected something like that, whereas the  Bhoys at Udine made as their most original contribute the City's Lech Poznan dance. . .   :-[

History lesson for pedants. Our founders weren't Scots - they were a mixture of locals and a couple of Welshmen. The Scots started with George Ramsay two years later.

Thank you Dave. It' s a privilege the possibility that we have on this beautiful forum to exchange ideas with Villans from all over the world, and with people like you and John Lerwill that have written books about the club and his proud history!
So, I'll correct my sentence saying that I have a sympathy for the Scots due to the predominant role that the Scottish contingent of the club played in the early days, is it correct?

And as far as George Ramsay is concerned, I have read that he was noticed because he astonished with his skills the team that was practicing at Aston Park!

I don't mean that they are from Ireland, but that they have Irish roots.

Obviously I may be wrong.
It's the impression that I had seeing them alive, and comparing the Celtic fans with the Heart fans that I saw in Bologna.

But, please note that Celtic fans are very friendly, loyal and passionate. Gret fans. The only thing that i have noticed is that they don't seem Scots.
Even all their flags are Irish.

A mate of mine was there for  two year stint a decade ago and managed to clear his mortgage in that time, but he said that social life was limited because of the danger. He also had to contend with dozens of requests on a daily basis for "tea money"

just seen this Pat. life here is good. Lagos is very hectic. Its not so much the danger because we live on the islands which are okay - it would take a good couple of hours to get to the mainland so sod that.

The pub, itself, was quite unusual. It had the atmosphere of being an exclusive club. The problem was that it was like being in a greenhouse up there, which was why we were glad to get outside. A great venue, close to the ground but not full of idiots.

10 year old kid last night in the restaurant in Englewood, New Jersey I was in, wearing the Nike 32 Red top.  I spoke to him & his father, they were NY Red Bull fans but both loved Villa & were very knowledgable about Villa because of the JP Angel connection & his family were all Browns fans so the Randy connection as well.

Just come back off holiday in Pefkos, Rhodes and in a cocktail bar called Rock Garden which also has apartments that you can stay in. If i go back i will try to stay there as these pictures prove is it has good taste there is something on the cocktail menu that is a must buy if/when you go there.

No, mate. And this is one of the reasons why my mates and I did choose Villa as our team when we were kids. One is that "Villa" is an Italian name, so it sounded to us more familiar than the likes of Rovers, United or Wanderers. The other is that these beautiful colours, the colours of the wine and the sky, with the body different from the sleeves, in Italy don't exist, so that team looked to us so . . . how can I say?. . . A few weeks go, after one of the devastating home losses, I was at a 'fandango' minding my own business, when someone walked past me wearing a black AVFC coat, from about 3 years ago.

I couldn't actually believe it, but apparently the guy had studied in England and picked up the coat for next to nothing at an end of season sale, in Sussex or something.

So didn't actually meet a fan, but still the first Mexican-Villa appearance so far.

I used to work for a company based just outside Monza.

On the day I left in 1997, I stuck this sticker up on the inside of one of the boss's PA's cupboards.

They company closed down last year, and the sticker was still there, having reminded my former colleagues of the claret and blue for the intervening 15 years.

You could be right.

I assumed that because the shirt in question was from the Carling cup final, that would be the link.
Having said that, if you were going for the populist vote, wouldn't you stick up a Man Utd shirt? Like I said, there are no other footy tops on display in there, and after all, we didn't even win it.

Absolutely correct and i think Ian Taylor donated it. Don't quote me on that but i think it is the case. There is a photo, signed of Ian Taylor in my local, The Inn Place, so it could have been him. He has his arms around a couple of Kitstealers in the bar, wearing his Villa shirt.

That is correct. A bloke called Daniel Trigg, Head of the Lanzarote Buisness Association went to a convention designed to bring more awareness to Lanzarote from the English tourist industry. While he was there he had meetings with representatives at Villa about this possibility. As of yet we have heard very little about the outcome of these meetings, but we live in hope. One thing that has happened though is Cardiff City using Puerto Del Carmen's teams for scouting. They have also donated quite a large sum of cash for youth development for the younger teams.
Another encouraging thing is that two English brothers have become first team players for our main side on the island, UD Lanzarote, the first English lads to ever play for the team. Ryan Macphee aged 21 and his brother Jamie aged 24 are getting very good reviews in the local press and have had a number of bigger Spanish teams watching them closely. I know their Mom very well and she is very proud of them both. Good level headed lads they are aswell.

Just come back off holiday in Pefkos, Rhodes and in a cocktail bar called Rock Garden which also has apartments that you can stay in. If i go back i will try to stay there as these pictures prove is it has good taste there is something on the cocktail menu that is a must buy if/when you go there.

I stayed in Pefkos in 1996, can't remember seeing that then (mind you I was 12/13). I do remember Southgate missing the penalty against Germany in the European Championships Semi-Finals whilst we were there though!

Yes, quite spectacular isn't it?  And it seems I haven't got my head around how to post the direct images.  I'm fast losing my temper today.  I can't sync my iPod, can't manage a simple posting process and now I've just found that the plug in socket on my mobile must be blocked as it won't accept the charger.  Not my day!

Actually I admit i do like the sky blue villa training  tops , I have about 3 from down the years , i do now have a penchant for the purple training top now and when it comes to the actual away shirts have always preferred black.

This is me on my last trip to VP. Can't believe it's over three years ago now (1-0 V Everton. Luke Young with the goal and Kevin Mac in charge). They had the trophies on display in the Academy hall so I wanted to take advantage. Getting a pic with the Intertoto on the Villa tour doesn't quite have the same effect.

Probably would have been smiling more if Mr Woodhall hadn't just sold me back-issues of H&V without me realising it.

It was a great game to bring a new fan into the fold. Obviously we won the match but beforehand, alongside the trophies, they had lots of kids activities in the Academy hall and those big photo-boards where you stick your head in and get a pic alongside your heroes - the '81 team etc.

Yeah, there was strictly no touching the silverware above, either. I went on the Chelsea tour (under duress) earlier this year and I think they were charging Ł15 for a photo with the Champions League trophy and I don't think you were allowed to touch it.

Cracking pic eamonn - how i wish we could get our hands on the fa cup again - I got to hold it once with a security guard lurking nearby - back in 1987 when it was on display for a day at the coventry transport museum.
Had to pay well over the odds for a photo holding it though :(

Yeah, there was strictly no touching the silverware above, either. I went on the Chelsea tour (under duress) earlier this year and I think they were charging Ł15 for a photo with the Champions League trophy and I don't think you were allowed to touch it.

We were allowed to put both hands on the fa cup handles but not pick it up - still worth it though as its not often you get the chance to get your hands on the fa cup.

Very enjoyable WV thanks, especially as I didn't particularly want to go there.  It was Mrs S that wanted to go; and I'm glad she did.  They have a great history, the people are very friendly, it isn't too expensive to eat out and the beer is reasonably priced.  €3.20 a pint in the pub near to the hotel we were staying in.

The weather is great, between 30 and 33 degrees all the time we were there except the day we returned when it froze at 27!  Mrs S loved it and wants to return only she says for ten days next time.  The place has some stunning scenery.  We did all the touristy things but if we do return I'd consider hiring a car for a day or two so that we could linger longer in some of the places we visited on the organised tours.

Gozo is a must too, a half hour ferry trip from the north end of Malta at a cost of €9.30 return per person.  Much the same as Malta only smaller.  You can see the Arab, Italian, British and Spanish influences in the architecture too.  Malta is a place that I would recommend for a holiday if you have never been before.

At just over 4100 feet the highest bit, Puig Neulós is almost Ben Nevis height. Those of you who have crossed into Spain just after Perpignan will have done so via Le Perthus or the motorway which is on the far right of the pic, just out of  sight.

If you're happy to have a bit of a walk Comino is also a great place to visit, my parents live over in Malta (in Qawra/Bugibba/St. Pauls Bay - depending on who you ask) so I've been there quite a few times.

From my experience -

If you like fish visit marsaslokk (I think that's the spelling) there are a few really good restaurants along there.
For a beach go to Gnejna Bay (Golden Bay in English) - it's right up in the north not far from the Gozo ferry but it's easily the best beach.
For a view visit Mdina - that's the old capital, it's a fully walled city on the highest point on the island, the view to the north is fantastic.
For a night out with bars and clubs you have to go to Paceville, everywhere else is small and quiet by comparison (which is good if that's what you're after).
If you're in Qawra and walk past the Red Lion on a sunday night there will be lots of people outside singing folk songs, my parents are likely to be amongst them.

Nearer to home a mere 100 miles from Villa Park the next village to ours organized a football game on the village green to mark the start of the World Cup. I drove past as I went down to my son's house in that London to watch the game with him. The game on the village green had all the players in their club shirts. The middle aged guy in the Villa shirt was awesome. He charged around like a wounded hippo. It made me even prouder to be a Villa fan.

Would the original Villa (I assume AVFC) have a right to claim ownership of the name?   What makes me ask this is that I'm sure when Mick Hucknall tried to open a restaurant called "Barca" he was met with a legal challenge by the football club.

Nothing like a bit of law discussion to start the week.

A Liverpudlian girl I know posted her son's birthday pictures up on Facebook yesterday.  As you'd imagine, it was red strip, blue strip, red strip, blue strip....then right at the end a little chap kitted out in his new Villa strip.  Fantastic to see.

i got married to a china girl a few years back in Shanghai - (Pat McMahon met her as well) and anyway in the official red photo for marriage book she adorned the 1996 AST away shirt. the white claret and blue one. It was one item i took to china on emigrating here. UTV in every sense.

That's great mate. I think I've got a photo of every girlfriend I've ever had decked out in Villa colours at some point. To be fair to them all, and now wife included, they've all become big fans of the Villa. Largely due to my fanaticism, but partly down to our beautiful colours!

I was at Norton Canes services on the M6 toll yesterday, and I parked up next to a car that had both an IOM number plate, and a Villa sticker in the back window.  I had to check that it wasn't me, but then I remembered I don't drive a VW Golf.

He's Ipswich mate. I went in the Nelson about 12 months ago with the kids and the dog. Gentrified now - the old Millwall fire station next door is a Turkish restaurant.

During the World Cup, we ended up watching the second half of the Sweden game in a pub in Liverpool. Near the end I noticed a guy sat in a pair of Villa shorts, so nipped over just to say it was good to see another Villa fan so far from home.

He seemed really pissed off I'd even spoken to him, and barely even mustered a reply!

Maybe they weren't his shorts.

Moved to South Devon in January 2021 and had a procession of builders and tradesmen in the house and garden since August.

Electrician - Villa fan.
3 different labourers - Villa fans
Glaziers - Villa fan (even had an AV reg on their van)

Pet Shop owner - Villa fan

Low points - metal fabricator was a Baggie and saw a small child in a Blues top a few weeks ago, reported to social services.

Quite honestly we're fucking massive.

I've spoken to a friend tonight who has just come back from a holiday in Dubai where he encountered a waiter in his hotel who was from Kazahstan. I recently travelled on holiday to Northern California and went to visit a friend who I converted to a Villa fan in 96' when living up on the Mendocino Coast. He lives in a tiny village called Comptche in the middle of nowhere about 45 mins inland from the coast. It had been about 10 years since I last visited and was trying to remember exactly which driveway was his when I looked up to see a huge Villa logo on the side of his garage at the entrance to his driveway. He still follows the Villa fanatically and was fully up to speed with all things pre-season, signings and even the inner workings of our youth team. He came to the door wearing a Paul MacGath t-shirt and we spent hours talking Villa sat in the Californian sun under the Redwoods trees that grow in his garden.

There is - was - not sure - a sports bar/cafe in Santo Tomas in Menorca. As youngsters we loved the resort so much we went three years in a row 2002-04. Anyway this was a regular haunt for us all three years. They used to have football shirts round the tops of the walls  that were donated by various visitors/patrons and there was a Villa LDV vans stripey top up there already.  I donated one of my AST 96 shirts that first year and to my utter delight it was still up on the walls the next two years we went back. On the topic of Menorca there was a Villa owned cafe in either Mahon or Citudella  - I can't remember which .

* Except for the genuinely miserable sods who don't. Few and far between though.

So Lee Hendrie WAS a Villa fan after all!

Not really related as it's all in jest, but I happened to be sat in the same train carriage as Lee about a year or so ago (until I was asked to leave).

He had a Villa pen & pad combo, which looked pretty worn, and a classic claret & blue striped scarf in his pocket.

Yes, but it's not the Westmeath county jersey (or Galway or Worcester). It's from the Delvin GAA club in Westemeath.
