I thought Dunne was very good today, after being dropped for three games, the best he's been this season quite comfortably in my view. He looked motivated, determined and a good deal lighter.
Should we credit Houllier for some brilliant man-management?
-
Well he was so much better today, he was like the Dunne pre the league cup final. So i'd say give Houllier credit.
-
Ask me in 5 games time. As we saw against Utd, it's sometimes easier to raise your game for the big matches. We've been very poor since we played so well against Utd.
But signs today were promising. Dunney kept focused and put the yards in. He was almost back to his best.
I would hope Houllier can pull us together and get those not pulling their weight to really perform.
I also thought today Gabby really bust a gut and worked hard, and I hadn't felt that so far this season, even considering injury problems.
-
I agree Tom, we need to see if we can carry this on over the rest of the season. At least though with everybody fit we'll have options again, even more so when Luke Young is back.
-
Agreed. We'll only know over the course of time. Today was a big game anyway and he was playing for his career here, so he might well have just been up for it. He needs to put in that performance a lot more before we start giving him or GH too much credit. Much, much better today though.
-
Initially yes, hopefully this is us seeing Dunne back to his best and not just him playing well because of the opposition and the fact the Sky cameras were there. Yes he was in no mans land when Drogba scored but Drogba is fantastic in the box.
-
They've clearly had a chat. A fully committed Dunne is a big asset to us, and if Houllier can get the best out him by giving a little then everyone's a winner. If in the summer Dunne decides to move on, then so be it. We need players of his and Ireland's ability right now.
-
Great game today, but we can judge in 5/6 games time. If only Ireland took the hint. At least Dunne's been professional about it
-
If this is the start of a comeback in form then we should keep him and save money on a new first choice CB.
Dicky Dunne at his motivated best is a lionheart and a colossus.
-
Much, much better. But their second goal was down to him missing a header by a light year. Still plenty of work to do.
-
A lot better from him and maybe he's responded to a kick up his big fat arse.
Early days though.
-
Id like to think so. I don't know if he'd lost weight, in my pub it's like watching a game in the fuckin hall of mirrors but he certainly played better.
-
Much better performance.

even the great Laursen was guilty of that every once in a while. With a fully committed Richard Dunne you're going to get mostly really solid displays with the odd clanger thrown in now and again.
-
Made at least one awesome tackle. Worth watching MOTD tonight just for that.
-
Still would prefer him and his crippling wages gone.
-
It was a much better performance from Dunne just hope he can keep it up for the rest of the season.
-
His tackle on Ramires in the box was worth the admission money alone (not that I went like)
-
Massive improvement from him today and a cracking tackle in the second half.
-
Still would prefer him and his crippling wages gone.
why, with performances like that and all last season who has ever said that his wages are crippling??
-
Looked ropey for their second but was pretty immaculate up until that.
Actually looks in better shape though, which can only help.
Wouldn't say it's particularly good management, he should have remained out of the team after the Wolves match and only came back when he was physically fit.
But that's water under the bridge, we need our best players firing to get us out of the mess we're currently in.
-
If Houllier can get Ireland & Carew back into the fold, we'll be looking stronger for 2011
-

He's got 2.5 more years on 60k a week. We should be getting better for that money.

what has the money got to do with it, until i hear randy say that richard dunnes wages are too high and it is crippling the club, well he can carry on putting performances in like the one today! I think the club has a problem with people never playing and recieving large wages, certainly not one of our starters and one of the 2 best centrebacks in the premier league last season!
-
Delighted that Richard Dunne has responded like this. On form and fit there are few better centre backs than him. He can be world class and if he keeps this form up he should be in our team for the rest of the season.
He probably should have been dropped earlier and asked to slim down but if he keeps this up, there's no use crying over spilt milk.
-
Thought Dunne was much better today, the back 4 looked a lot better even though we conceded 3
-
An on form Richard Dunne is as good a CB as there is in the Prem
-
Looks a bit slimmer, played well and his attitude was good- gave his all to the cause and I'd be happy for him to stay if he continues to apply this level of effort- well done Richard and well done GED!
-
We generally are more solid with Dunne in the team, especially on the left.He is prone to the odd mistake in the big games, and i would move him on only if we get somebody in whos better.Theres nobody at the club atm whos better as the left sided central defender.
-
Certainly looks like a man pleased to be back.

Great photo that.....doesn't want to play for the club? Give over!
-
I think it was good man management. Dunne was playing badly and rightly got dropped. he has been given another chance by the Manager and looks like he has a point to prove.
I remember one of the issues with MO'N was that he never dropped players when they were playing badly, so well done Gerrard.
-
He was overweight and underperforming. So the manager dropped him from the team. Now he has lost weight and performed better in training. So the manager has given him a new chance. Sounds reasonable to me.
-
Good photo.
Pit about the claret socks. :-)

According to a report in yesterday's Daily Mail Randy ordered Houllier to play Dunne and find a place in the squad for Ireland.

The frightening thing is, some people believe that crap.
-
That is the Daily Mail for you, always with a finger on the pulse.

Its good that we have a manager that will do that. For a few weeks I thought maybe GH had a soft spot for Dunne and would not drop him. He did and it looks as if it had given Dunne a kick up the arse.
He was good last season so if he can capture that form it can only be good for Villa.
