Heard tonight that Hugh Johns sadly passed away yesterday.
The voice of midlands TV footy when I was a kid.

RIP

I echo those sentiments completely. Hugh Johns was an essential part of my Sunday afternoons back in the 60s and 70s. I had the good fortune to meet him, along with Billy Wright, outside the Council House in Brum the day after the Villa returned from their League Cup Final with Spurzzz.

RIP Hugh.

Provided the most memorable backdrop to mine (and many others) classic Sunday afternoons when I was a kid.  A true legend - God bless you mate.

Fondly remembered as a great, popular commentator in his time.
Famous, of course, for being the ITV commentator for the World Cup Final in 1966 and not saying "They think it's all over".
RIP

Hugh Johns has a part of my childhood, it was too late for me to watch MOTD, but 'Star Soccer' on a Sunday afternoon was regular viewing.
Sunday Lunch, Star Soccer, and then straight over the Park for a match with my mates.
RIP Hugh Johns.

RIP Hugh, thanks for some great memories.

Such as?

Hate to interupt another h&v love-in but i'm struggling to remember any 'great memories' provided by Hugh Johns.
Any game covered by him always drew a collective groan in our Seventies living room, he was always considered the height of naffness and was well past it even during the Star Soccer heyday.
Sorry to hear that the old boy has passed on and all that but, great memories?...nah!....

Star Soccer's main problem was that the main match was Villa or Wolves one week, but then they had to go down the Sty, and also cover Stoke, Port Vale and Walsall.

Johns' had a fantastic voice, was always enthusiastic without trying to be too smart or bombard us with stats. He also had lots of idiosyncratic touches, like saying "one-nothing" never "nil."

I always associate his voice with Yorkshire pudding and gravy, as the programme was always while we were waiting for Sunday lunch.

Bigad82 - I was preparing an answer then saw your post. It totally sums up the atmosphere of the time.

See you later Hugh.
