Burton Albion Pre-Season Pre-Match Thread
« on: July 19, 2018, 10:32:48 PM »
So then, this Saturday Villa take on Burton Albion in a preseason game. However, it isn’t just a normal run-of-the-mill friendly. There is a trophy to play for: The Bass Charity Vase.

Forgive my self-indulgence, as I thought I’d try to educate a few of you (not that anyone cares!).
Here goes…..(apologies to the mods, move/rename/delete as necessary)
The idea of football clubs doing their bit for the local good causes isn’t a new thing.
Most 19th century footballing towns did their bit for the local community. Birmingham had the Lord Mayor’s Charity Cup (often referred to as the Birmingham Charity Cup), whilst West Bromwich, Wednesbury, Walsall all had their own Charity Cups. 19th century Burton was a well-known footballing area, their charity cup was channelled through the local Bass family and was known as Bass Charity Vase. All except Bass Charity Vase have fallen by the wayside (the Birmingham Charity Cup lasted up to 1939, after it had been reduced from a semi-final/final format to a single game in 1906. The expansion of the football league was the reason, the Birmingham Counties FA also relaxed the rulings in the Birmingham Senior Cup, allowing reserve teams to complete in the cup……buts that’s something for another day….).

Anyway, onwards to our involvement in Bass Charity Vase. We’ve had 6 attempts so far:
1 - The club first entered the cup in 1892-93 season, Villa faced Derby in final. The game swung either way, first Derby took the lead, Villa came back, before Derby equalising in the second half. At the end of normal time, the players when off for a few minutes.
Only Villa returned to play extra-time. Derby had had enough and cleared off home.
After some deliberation, we were declared winners by default!
The Derby press stated that the Derby players had done nothing wrong and anticipated the final would have to be replayed. However, there would be no free dates to replay the match.
2 - We followed this up with winning it properly the next year, pumping Stoke by four goals in the final.
3 - The year after that we sent a mainly reserve side to Leicester and got done.
4 - 90 years later (1985) we sent the reserves to Gresley’s Moat Ground and lost to Derby. Interestingly, for the 3rd play playoff, we played a stronger side including Evans, Gibson, McMahon, Shaw & Walters.
5 - According to the reserve coach at the time, Dave Richardson, the semi-final penalty loss suffered in 1986 was a blessing.
After agreeing to play in the completion, Villa realised that they would be unable to play in the final if they won their semi-final tie with Burton Albion. A tour of Italy had been already arranged the following week.
6 - The last time we entered the completion was 1988, with a mixed team taking part. Mostly noticeably Sid Cowans getting some game time in order to get to grips with the English game again following his return from Italy, a newly transfer listed Warren Aspinall fresh from his sending off in a friendly in Scotland and also an appearance of a 16-year-old Bryan Small.

Our full record in the Bass Charity Vase is:

Thought I saw a reservist team playing in this competition later than '88? My neighbour always used to provide the ball for the final, used to be that Gresley Rovers were Burtons main rivals...

I think they said during the commentary of the Walsall game that it was going to be on You Tube.
